S = Sam, T = Tom, I = Isabella
S: So, this morning, the papers are all full of stories about British tourists who can’t get home because of
extreme weather in parts of the US. Tom, has anything like that ever happened to you?
T: Er … well, I once had to stay an extra day in New York because of the snow.
S: Oh, that sounds terrible, Tom! How ever did you manage?
T: Yeah, it was tough, Sam. I spent most of it in shops and cafés.
S: Right … anyway, this morning we’re speaking to someone who did actually experience some extreme
weather. Isabella was in Florida during the recent hurricane. Hi, Isabella! Nice to have you on the show.
I: Hi! Nice to be here! S: So, what happened to you?
I: Well, we were staying on the coast and the first thing that I noticed was the sea: the waves were getting
bigger – and more frequent – but, you know, nothing dramatic, at least to begin with. But then, it started
getting very windy. So windy that, very soon, you couldn’t stand upright when you went outdoors. And at
this point, the hotel staff told us that there’d been a hurricane warning and that we had to stay indoors.
T: Oh, my days! I: Which of course we did! And then came the rain – and I’ve never seen anything like it in
my life. It was like a monsoon! A little further down the coast, the floods were worse but, even where we
were, the water was just running down the street, as if someone had turned on an enormous tap.
T: Wow!
I: So anyway, we spent two days in the hotel, waiting for the hurricane to pass. When it eventually passed,
honestly, everywhere you went the smell was terrible. Trees had come down and were lying in the road and
there was rubbish all over the place. Everywhere was absolutely filthy.
S: So, was it frightening, being shut up in the hotel like that?
I: Well, the area that we were in wasn’t as badly affected as others – we were lucky. But, yes, it was quite
scary. It was like a really extreme storm.
S: Right, and, as you say, it would have been worse if you’d been further down the coast.
I: Yes, that’s right.
S: It sounds like it was bad enough in any case! Thanks for sharing that, Isabella.
I: No problem. Bye!
