Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla (March 17,1962- February 1, 2003)
was an Indian-American astronaut who became the
first woman of the Indian origin to go to space. She
first flew in Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a
mission specialist. She had 2 Masters degree and a
PhD in aerospace engineering. She spent 31 days
and 15 hours in space. She was honoured with
Congressional Space Medal of Honour, NASA
Distinguished Service Medal and NASA Space
Flight Medal. There are numerous honours and
recognitions dedicated to her after her tragic death
in 2003 aboard STS-107, Columbia.
Tessy Thomas

Tessy Thomas (born April 1963 in Kerala)


named after Mother Teresa, is an Indian scientist
and Director General of Aeronautical Systems
and the former Project Director for Agni-IV
missile in Defence Research Development
Organisation. She is the first ever woman
scientist to head a missile project in India. She is
currently 58 years old and works as a scientist at
DRDO. She was awarded with Lal Bahadur
Shastri National Award and Dr Thomas Cangan
Leadership Award. She has also inked various
books related to propulsion and trajectory.
Bhakti Sharma

Bhakti Sharma (born 30 November, 1989, in


Mumbai) is an Indian Open water swimmer. She was
the first Asian woman and the youngest in the world
to set a record in open swimming in Antarctic waters.
She has swum in all the five oceans of the world,
besides 8 other seas and channels. She is the third
person in the world to ever swim in the Arctic Ocean.
She holds many prizes and awards from winnings
during her 10 year career in swimming. She was
honoured with Tenzing Norgay National Adventure
Award in 2010.
