Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla (March 17,1962- February 1, 2003)
was an Indian-American astronaut who became the
first woman of the Indian origin to go to space. She
first flew in Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a
mission specialist. She had 2 Masters degree and a
PhD in aerospace engineering. She spent 31 days
and 15 hours in space. She was honoured with
Congressional Space Medal of Honour, NASA
Distinguished Service Medal and NASA Space
Flight Medal. There are numerous honours and
recognitions dedicated to her after her tragic death
in 2003 aboard STS-107, Columbia.
