Winter Camping Tips

1. Dress in layers, having a base layer, mid layer, puffers and rain-shells. If you get sweaty you can
remove layers.
2. Bring a change of clothes in case you get sweaty as fresh clothes are warmer than wet clothes.
3. Bring an extra sleeping mat to add insulation and keep yourself warm.
4. Bring an extra sleeping bag or lightweight quilt for extra warmth during the night.
5. Place a hot water bottle on your core to warm the blood that travels through your body.
6. Wear a balaclava while sleeping to prevent heat escaping your head.
7. Ventilate your tent to prevent condensation from breathing and ice from forming.
8. Eat and drink a lot to prevent fatigue.
9. Bring hand warmers.
10. Camp in an area sheltered from wind.
11. Set up your tent on packed snow.
12. Have equipment up to standard for your trip.
13. Do jumping jacks to stay warm.
14. Set up your camp in daylight.
15. Bring nutritious snacks like granolas bars and trail mix.
16. Test your equipment and gear in your own backyard for a night to ensure everything is in
working order.
17. Bring an old coat for the fire to keep your new ones safe from sparks.
18. Have a reliable water source, and know if you’ll be melting snow.
19. Change clothes in your sleeping bag.
20. Always know your camp and bring a map.
