BEGINNERS GUIDE TO

JESMONITE casting compound

Pepper Please
studio
HELLO THERE

And I am the owner and sole operator of Pepper Please

Studio. I am proud to say that PPS is a one-woman
owned and operated small business. I handle all aspects
of the business myself, including creating the pieces,
filming, photography, editing, website design, packing,
shipping, and managing social media.

I fell in love with Jesmonite virtually in the middle of 2021

when I didn't even know the name of the material. At that
time, it was still a well-kept secret in the world of social
media. After a few months of research, I was sad to find
that Jesmonite was not available for purchase in my
province. However, in November 2021, it finally became
available in Ontario, Canada, and has since become an
essential part of my daily routine.

The impact that this material has had on my life is

enormous. It has helped me through tough times and has
played a crucial role in the creation of my own small
business. But that is a story for another time.

This guide is based on my personal experience, months

of research, practice, numerous trials and errors, and
substantial monetary investments.

WHAT IS JESMONITE AND WHY
SHOULD YOU WORK WITH IT?

Jesmonite is a versatile and lightweight composite

material consisting of a gypsum-based powder and a
water-based acrylic resin. In other words, it is an eco-
friendly, non-toxic alternative to epoxy resins, plaster or
concrete.

Jesmonite contains no solvents or VOC's (volatile

organic compounds), which makes it a safe material
to use.
It is a water-based material, which means it does not
release harmful toxins and is considered
environmentally friendly.
Jesmonite can be recycled and reused, making it a
sustainable and eco-friendly choice.

In addition to all the great properties of this material, I

personally love that smooth and stone-like feel of the
finished product.

Any cons? Yes! It is an expensive material, and it has

limited working time.

JESMONITE AC100:
The most known acrylic (eco) resin in the World.
All my pieces (except soap dishes & few trays) are made
of it.
It can be used for a bunch of different techniques,
such as terrazzo, marble, gold leaf, etc.
It has limited working time after two parts (liquid and
powder) are mixed, about 10-20 minutes before it
starts to set.
TIP: make sure it is not too hot in the room you work in, as
heat will drastically minimize your working time!
Finished products are durable, lightweight and have
a smooth surface. Inside use only.

JESMONITE AC730:
Also very popular in the acrylic resin World material.
All my soap dishes are made of it.
Best choice for soap dishes because It can be used
within wet environments.
It has longer working time and requires about 4 hours
to set. After that it needs to be etched.
TIP: Use white vinegar to etch your pieces. Soak your item
in it for 20 minutes, then use a toothbrush to scratch a top
layer off and bring that grainy texture forward.
Finished products are durable, heat, fire and water
resistant, and have a cement-like grainy surface.
Inside and outside use.

PIGMENTS
Coloring Jesmonite is fun and creative task. I use original
Jesmonite Pigments most of the time and sometimes I
prefer to use mica powders.
JESMONITE PIGMENTS
They only come in few (mostly basic) colors and if you
want or need to achieve some particular shade, be
prepared to mix it yourself. I personally do NOT know
color theory and mixing my own colors is quite a
challenge for me. Hardest part is to replicate them.
TIP: Mix pigments into the Jesmonite liquid before adding
the powder. It'll give you more control and longer working
time.
Jesmonite pigments are highly concentrated liquid
pigments. For light pastel colors it's enough to add
tiniest drop possible using a tip of a cocktail stick. To get
strong saturated color add 2% of total mixture weight. Do
not exceed 2% rule, otherwise material will not set.

MOLDS
I currently have around 50 to 70 molds, and for me, it's a
never-ending game. I'm always on the lookout for new
shapes, better quality, and unique varieties.
ALIEXPRESS
I get most of my generic molds from AliExpress. While
they are affordable, shipping can take anywhere from 3
weeks to 3 months. I recommend checking reviews and
ordering from a seller with a higher number of sales for a
smoother experience.

AMAZON
Most of the molds are the same as from AliExpress, but
much faster shipping/delivery time. For some examples,
please check out my Amazon Storefront.

SANDING
I wet sand all my pieces. It is easier and less messy than dry
sanding. NOTE: If you choose to dry sand make sure to wear
a mask! I prefer to sand shortly after demolding, especially
terrazzo pieces. Some creators wait 24 hours to make sure
their product is fully set.

Wet sanding requires Wet Dry sandpaper. For my terrazzo,

shells, crystals, sand and stone pieces I use around 6-7
different grits. I start with 240. This one takes the most time.
Then I switch to 320, 400, 600, 800 and finish with 1200.

TIP: More time and attention you give it, better results you
get.

If you create single colored, marble or any non terrazzo

pieces when sanding is not that time consuming. I only sand
bottoms and any sharp edges/air bubbles holes of my non
terrazzo pieces. For bottoms I use 240 or lower grit and I
finish it up with 400 or 600, as I like them smooth.

SEALING AC100
PLEASE NOTE: Jesmonite is a porous material. Sealers I
use will make it water resistant, but not waterproof.
Also, Jesmonite has not been tested for food safety.
Therefore, it is not recommended to use Jesmonite items
for food even after applying food safe sealer.
CLARK'S STONE & CONCRETE WAX
My #1 choice! It is a mix of carnauba wax, beeswax and
food grade mineral oil. This wax provides water resistant
coating & makes colors pop. Apply with makeup sponge,
leave for few minutes, then buff with soft cloth. Repeat.
TIP: Do not let wax sit on light colored pieces, buff right
after applying as it may stain/change color of the item.

Amazon USA:

JESMONITE ACRYLIC SEALER

It gives a good spill and stain protection, but can be
harder to work with compared to wax, as it tends to leave
streaks.
TIP: Dilute it with 10-20% of water, apply to the piece with
sponge or brush, wipe it off with soft cloth. Repeat using
undiluted sealer. Wipe it off, let it dry.

ODIE'S OIL
Originally designed as a finish for wood, this oil is also
suitable for use on Jesmonite. It is food safe, solvent-
free, and non-toxic, making it an excellent alternative to
wax. The oil enhances the vibrancy of colors and
provides good water resistance.
TIP: Apply, do NOT wait as per instruction for wood
application, wipe off right away. May be repeated.

EARTH SAFE CONCRETE DUO

The Sealer and Varnish Duo is a versatile solution for a
range of applications. The Varnish can serve as an
alternative to Jesmonite Acrylic Sealer, while the Sealer
is ideal for use on candle vessels. Remember to dilute
both products with water before use, and apply with a
soft brush. Be sure to follow the instructions on the
containers for best results

SEALING AC730
Jesmonite AC730 requires a penetrating sealer. I did not
have a chance to try original Jesmonite Penetrating
Sealer, as it wasn't available for purchase, so I had to
find an alternative.

GRANITE SEALER BY BLACK DIAMOND

My current choice. It is non-toxic water based
penetrating sealer. Follow application instructions. I
apply 3-5 coats.

ACCESSORIES:
Here are some essential items in addition to the
materials we discussed earlier:
Scales (to measure liquid and powder)
Mixing Cups (preferably different sizes)
Stirring Sticks (spatulas will be very helpful too)
I highly recommend using a hand mixer or a resin mixer
drill attachment to achieve a smooth mixture with no
clumps, which is the key to creating the perfect piece.
You can find examples of these accessories on my
Amazon Storefront under the 'Accessories' list.
