Background information

Survey Research

“Survey research is defined as "the collection of information from a sample of individuals

through their responses to questions" (Check & Schutt, 2012, p. 160). This type of
research allows for a variety of methods to recruit participants, collect data, and utilize
various methods of instrumentation. Survey research can use quantitative research
strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research
strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it
is often used to describe and explore human behavior, surveys are therefore frequently
used in social and psychological research” (Ponto, 2015).

A survey is a method of gathering information using relevant questions from a sample of

people with the aim of understanding populations as a whole. Surveys provide a critical
source of data and insights for everyone engaged in the information economy, from
businesses to media, to government and academics.

Practitioner in Oncology, 6(2),168-171.

Research Scenario

You are leading a team of teachers at Kuwait Elementary School who are investigating the
effects of a new reading program on students' literacy skills. The goal of this study is to
analyze how the program's activities and resources influence students' reading abilities. To
achieve this, you will be surveying students about their experiences with the reading
program. As the lead researcher, you and your team are excited to provide valuable
insights into enhancing literacy education. However, before starting the study, you need
approval from the school's administration (Institutional Review Board - IRB). Your task is to
prepare and present a survey to the school board (IRB) for their review and approval.

TASK: Your task is to prepare a short video (maximum 2 and a half minutes)
explaining the basics of your survey to the IRB. Introduce yourself and discuss the
following in your video:

 Research topic
 Objective of the survey (guiding questions and answers)
 Survey type
 Advantage(s)
 Challenge(s)
 Sampling
 Any validity and/or ethical considerations
 Considerations about survey accessibility, bias, cultural sensitivity, cost,
time, others, etc.
 Mode of survey administration
 Survey management (post-survey actions)
 Types of questions and 1-2 examples of questions (one question for each
type)
