CLAUSES OF PURPOSE

1. Cụm từ "in order to" và "so as to"


Cấu trúc "in order to" và "so as to" có nghĩa là “để, để mà”, được dùng trong câu để giới thiệu về
mục đích của hành động được nhắc đến ngay trước đó.
Cấu trúc:
S + V + in order/so as + (not) + to + V … .
Ví dụ:
He borrowed money so as to buy a computer. (Anh ta mượn tiền để mua 1 chiếc máy tính.)
She wore headphones in order not to disturb anyone. (Cô ấy đeo tai nghe để không làm ảnh hưởng
ai.)

***Lưu ý:
Ta có cấu trúc "in order to" - Khi mục đích hành động hướng tới đối tượng khác

S + V + in order + for O + (not) + to + V ….


Ví dụ:
He closed the window in order for me not to get cold. (Anh ấy đóng cửa sổ để tôi không bị cảm
lạnh.)

2. Cụm từ "so that" và "in order that"


Cấu trúc "so that" và "in order that" cũng có nghĩa là “để, để mà” và theo sau là 1 mệnh đề (S + V)
Cấu trúc:
S + V + so that/ in order that S + can/could/will/would (not) + V0
Ví dụ:
I’ll go by car so that I can take more luggage. (Tôi sẽ đi bằng ô tô để tôi có thể mang nhiều hành lý
hơn.)
Let's go to the cinema early in order that we can get good seats. (Hãy đến rạp chiếu phim sớm để
chúng ta được ngồi ở vị trí đẹp.)

EXERCISE

1) People use money so that they can buy things they need. (in order to)

→ People use money in order to buy things they need.

2) Banks are developed so that they can keep people’s money safe. (in order to)

→ Banks are developed in order to keep people's money safe.

3) I need to buy some laundry detergent so that I will wash my clothes. (in order to)

→ I need to buy some laundry detergent in order to wash my clothes.

4)I came to this school so that I could learn English . (in order to)

→ I came to this school in order to learn English

5) Tom was playing very softly so that he wouldn’t disturb anyone. (in order not to)
→ Tom was playing very softly in order not to disturb anyone.

6) They rushed into the burning house so that they could save the child. (in order to)

→ They rushed into the burning house in order to save the child.

7) Lan often attends English Speaking Club to practice speaking English. (so as to )

→ Lan often attends English Speaking Club so as to practice speaking English.

8) He stood on the chair to see better. (in order to)

→ He stood on the chair in order to see better.

9) Please shut the gate for the cows not to get out of the cowshed. (in order to )

→ Please shut the gate in order to prevent the cows from getting out of the cowshed.

10) The boy tiptoed into the room not to wake every body up. (so as to)

→ The boy tiptoed into the room so as to let everybody sleep.
