ALL NUTRIENTS:
There are six basic nutrients. Carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals, vitamins, and water. All of
these are classified as essential. Your body requires essential nutrients to function properly.
These nutrients should be obtained from the food you eat, your body cannot make them on
your own.

 Carbohydrates – are the sugars, starches and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables
and milk products, though often maligned in trendy diets carbohydrates one of the basic
food groups are important to a healthy diet. Carbohydrates are macronutrients,
meaning they are one of the three main ways the body obtains energy. They are called
carbohydrates because, at the chemical level, they contain carbon, hydrogen and
oxygen.
 Protein – is an important part of a healthy diet. Proteins are made up of chemical
building blocks called amino acid. Your body uses amino acids to build and enzymes.
They can also be used as an energy source.
 Fats – a type of nutrient that you get from your diet. It is essential to eat some fats,
though it is also harmful to eat too much. The fats you eat give your body energy that it
needs to work properly. During exercise, your body uses calories from carbohydrates
you have eaten.
 Minerals – the body uses minerals for many different jobs, including keeping your
bones, muscles, heart, and brain working properly. Minerals are also important for
making enzymes and hormones.
 Vitamins – vitamins are vital are vital for good health, but needed in much smaller
amounts than macro-nutrients, like carbs and fats. They're important for many daily
bodily functions, such as cell reproduction and growth, but most importantly for the
processing of energy in cells.
 Water – the body uses water in all its cells, organs and tissues to help regulate
temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Because your body loses water
through breathing, sweating, and digestion, it's important to rehydrate by drinking fluid
and eating foods that contain water.
FOOD SOURCE NUTRIENT ARE FOUND IN:

 Staples
 Legumes
 Food from animals
 Fats & oil
 Fruits & vegetables
FUNCTION OF EACH NUTRIENTS IN THE BODY

Nutrients have one or more of three basic functions: they provide energy, contribute to body
structure, and/or regulate chemical processes in the body. These basic functions allow us to
detect and respond to environmental surroundings, move excrete wastes, breath, grow, and
produce.

Names of nutrients sources functions

Carbohydrates rice, potato, wheat sugar provides energy
Fats butter, milk, cheese gives more energy compared to
Carbohydrates.
Vitamins & minerals fruits & vegetables required for normal growth and
Development.
Proteins milk. Eggs, meat, fish, soybean helps in building and repair of
Body.
WHAT WILL RESULT IF THERE IS A DEFICIENCY OF EACH NUTRIENTS

Nutritional deficiency is an inadequate supply of essential nutrients in the diet which results in
malnutrition or disease. Nutritional deficiencies can lead to a variety of health problems, such
as problems of digestion, skin problems, stunted or defective bone growth, and even dementia.
