stanchions, grillage and raft and strip foundation in building construction. Providing and casting in
situ cement concrete 1:2:4 for R.C.C. columns as per detailed designs and drawings or as directed
including dewatering centering from- work, compacting, finishing the formed surface with cement
mortar 1:3 of sufficient minimum thickness to give a smooth and even surface or roughening if
special finish is to be provided and curing (excluding steel reinforcement).
Materials –
A) Workability : The following procedure is adopted for testing workability;
(i) There should be mentioned of specified workability as per grade requirement and site
requirement in the tender document
(ii) After making sure that the concrete has been uniformly mixed, take a sample from the first 0.5
cum. of concrete discharge and do a sump (of compacting factor) test on the sample. If the result
complies with the specified requirements, then the load should be accepted. If the results are
beyond limit, a further sample should be taken from the second 0.5 cum. of the discharge and if
this is satisfactory, the load should be accepted, if not the concrete load should be rejected, as the
same is not as per the specification range. Permissible variation in sump shall be 10 mm as per IS:
4926-1976.
B) Cement Content : Cement content for cubic meter of Ready Mix Concrete shall be mentioned
for each grade of concrete. The minimum cement content in the various grades of concrete shall
be as per design mix for a particular grade of concrete. The mix design shall confirm to one of the
methods specified in IS: 10262 or IRC 44. However preferable the mix design should be done as
per details given in IRC-44 of 1976- “Tentative guidelines cement concrete mix design”. The mix
design shall be approved from Govt. laboratory. The grade of cement shall be mentioned in the
contract documents. Cement shall have to be got tested at the Govt. laboratory or the laboratory
approved by the Engineer in Charge.
D) Sand : Sand shall be of approved quality with fineness modulus between 2.4 to 3.5 as per
approved mix design. The sand will have to be screened to remove the oversize particles and
washed to reduce the silt contents below 5% by volume after one hour & to bring it within
the permissible range of fineness modulus. Blending of sand of fine and coarse quality may be
permitted at mix design stage to achieve the required fineness modulus, if it is found necessary to
give desired results. The fine aggregates will be tested as directed by Engineer in Charge.
E) Coarse Aggregate : Specified sizes of aggregates mentioned in design mix shall be used by
manufacturer of RMC plant. Client shall confirm the quality of sand used for concrete. If coarse
aggregate are found having white spots, the same shall be got tested from approved testing
laboratory to eliminate possibility of potential aggregate alkali reactivity before accepting or using
spotted aggregates. The manufacturer should make the necessary arrangements to stock the
aggregates separately so that they do not get mixed up with each other and/or with the foreign
materials and do not get segregated. The screening of the aggregates shall be done if found
necessary as directed by the Engineer in Charge.
F) Compressive Strength : Compressive Strength testing shall be carried out on site for 7 days,
14 days and 28 days strength. The water content shall be the minimum required to provide the
specified workability for full compaction of the concrete to the required compaction of the concrete
to the required density. The maximum water cement ratio shall be 0.40. At least three sets
consisting of 4 cubes from different loads for testing the compressive strength for each days work.
One cube from each set shall be tested for 7 days, 14 days and 28 days strength in presence

following admixtures to be used in concrete: (i) Accelerating Admixtures, (ii) Retarding
Admixtures, (iii) Water Reducing Admixtures, (iv) Air Entraining Admixtures,
Proportioning Mix - In ordinary concrete, although proportion of cement to fine and coarse
aggregate is specified by volume, the quantity of cement shall be determined by weight assuming
one bag of cement weighing 50 Kg. nett to be equivalent to 35 litres. Fine and coarse aggregates
Ingredients required for concrete containing 50 Kg. bag of cement for different proportions of mix
will be as under :-
aggregate aggregate
1 2 3 4 5
In case of slabs special mixes with smaller size aggregates shall be taken out and placed below
bottom steel to obtain dense cover. The ratio of the volumes of the fine and coarse aggregates
may be varied within limits of 1:1.5 to 1:2.5 as directed by the Engineer to suit the maximum size of
coarse aggregate, the grading, density, workability and strength without extra cost. But the sum of
the volumes of the fine and coarse aggregates so adjusted shall however be equal to the sum of
Mixing -
For all important works concrete shall be mixed in mechanical mixer at the site of work. Care shall
be taken to see that the mixer and other accessories are in first class working condition especially
the blades which have to extend right up to the bottom of the drum. Trial mix shall be taken out to
ensure good mixing. Mixing shall be continued till there is uniform distribution of the materials and
a uniform colour is obtained and each individual particle of the coarse aggregate shall show a
complete coating of mortar containing its proportionate amount of cement. In no case mixing shall
be done for less than 1.5 minutes. The water cement ratio shall range between 0.55 to 0.64 for
1:2:4 mix. When hand mixing is permitted by the Engineer it shall be done on a smooth water tight
platform large enough to allow efficient turning over of the ingredients of concrete before and after
adding water. Mixing platform shall be so arranged that no foreign matter shall get mixed with
concrete nor the mixing water shall flow out. The cement in required number of bags shall be
placed in a uniform layer on top of the measured quantity to fine aggregate required, also spread in
a layer of uniform depth in the mixing platform. Dry sand and cement then shall be mixed
thoroughly by turning over to get a mixture of uniform Colour. Enough water shall then be added
gradually through a rose and the mass turned over till a mortar of required consistency is obtained.
The measured quantity of coarse aggregate shall then be placed on a mixing platform and wetted
and the mortar added and the entire mass turned and returned until all the particle of the coarse
aggregate are fully covered with mortar and mixture is of a uniform colour and required
consistency. In hand mixing, quantity of cement shall be increased by 5% above that specified in
para. B.5.3 without any extra cost. Concrete shall have a consistency such that it will be workable
in the required position and in the case of R.C.C., flow around reinforcing steel also. For vibrated
concrete, slump shall range between 2.5 cm. to 5 cm. For hand tamped concrete, slump shall
range between 8 cm. to 13cm.according to the type and nature of the concrete item. The slump
shall be least permitted by workability and maintained throughout the concreting operation of a
member. The concrete shall be placed in its final position and rammed, vibrated and finished within
30 minutes of adding water to cement. Re-tempering or remixing of partially hardened concrete
shall not be permitted.
Scaffolding -
All scaffolding, hoisting arrangements and ladders, etc., required for the facility of concreting shall
be provided by the contractor at his own expense and removed on the completion of work. The
Materials -
The forms and false work shall be made of wood or metal. The timber from which the forms are
prepared should preferably be partially seasoned as too dry a timber will swell for absorption of
moisture while green timber will dry and shrink. It shall be free from sap, shakes, loose knots,
wormholes or other defects. The plants and scantlings shall be sawn straight and all edges and
planes shall be straight and free from warps. Partially seasoned soft wood is generally preferable
for formwork as it is difficult to drive nails in hard wood. The dimensions of scantlings should
conform to the design. The strength of the wood shall not be less than that assumed in the design.
In metal form, steel sheets of designed gauge strengthened with framing of angle or other sections
shall be used. Wooden forms may also be lined with thin steel sheets or plywood to give the
required surface or finish.
Fabrication -
The timber plans and scantlings of designed dimensions shall be used in the formwork with
appropriate spacing of studs, yokes, joists, girders, etc., as provided in the design. All timber in
contact with concrete shall be wrought on one face and two edges, the unwrought face being on
the outside. The joints should be made mortar tight. This may be done either by providing tongued
and prooved or rebated. joints or by caulking or nailing metal strips or applying adhesive tape on
the joints. The forms shall be built with sufficient strength and rigidity and held in shape by bolts,
clamps, ties, nails, wales or other contrivance to prevent distortion or collapse due to pressure of
concrete and other loads incidental to the construction operations. The nuts and bolt heads inside
the formwork adjoining the concrete should be countersunk. The formwork should allow finish
concrete to have a smooth surface and conforms to the shapes, lines and dimensions shown on
the plans and true to line and grades. The effect of vibration shall be taken into account in the
design and fabrication of forms and falsework. Forms shall be so designed and constructed as to
be removable in sections without damaging the surface of the concrete and with facilities of
removal in the ascending order of removal time, without disturbing the remaining forms required to
be removed later.
Treatment of inside of forms - Before placing concrete, the inside of the forms which comes in
contract with concrete shall coated with mineral oil or any other suitable material approved by the
wall
For Pozzolana Grade 43 or Grade 53 and other types of cements the striking period may be
suitably modified. In important structures, the sequence of striking formwork shall be approved by
the Engineer.
Reuse - Before reuse, all forms shall be thoroughly scraped and cleaned, joints gone over and
repaired and the insides retreated to prevent adhesion, all to the entire satisfaction of the Engineer.
The shape, strength, rigidity, mortar tightness and surface smoothness of reused forms shall be
maintained at all times.
Transporting - The concrete shall be handled from the place of mixing to the final position as
quickly as practicable by methods which will prevent segregation and loss of ingredients. In no
case shall the operation take more than 15 minutes.
Placing -
The concrete shall be placed into its final position, compacted and finished within 30 minutes of
mixing the water and before setting commences. The method of placing shall be such as to avoid
segregation. Placing shall be done in a balanced manner to avoid eccentric loads on formwork. As
far as practicable the concrete for a particular portion shall be done in one continuous operation.
The construction joints when required shall be made only where located on the plans or shown in
the pouring schedule unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. The joint shall be regular and
vertical and shall be made by placing a bulk head at the joint. Before commencing subsequent
concreting, all loose particles, laitance, etc., shall be removed and the surface shall then be
covered by thick cement slurry as part of placement. Care shall be taken during the placing not to
disturb the forms or the reinforce-ment. Concrete compacted manually, shall preferably be laid in
layers of 15 cm. to 20 cm. the layers being decided by the time lapse between the successive
layers. The time of laying one layer shall not exceed 30 minutes. The successive layers shall
commence within 30 minutes. When work is to be resumed on a surface which has hardened,
such a surface shall be roughened and scrubbed with brushes to remove laitance, care being
taken to avoid dislodgement of coarse aggregate, swept clean, thoroughly wetted and covered with
6mm. thick mortar layer composed of cement and sand in the same proportion as the cement and
sand in the concrete, immediately before the commencement of concrete, for securing good bond.
The concrete shall be normally laid in the dry. If the area is under water, it shall be pumped dry and
kept so while placing concrete and till it sets. Where it is necessary to deposit concrete under
water, it shall be done as per I.S. 456-1964* para. 13.2. No extra payment will be made for the
15cm. cubes
Kg./sq.cm. at 7 Kg./sq.cm. at 28

One set of six 15cm. cubes shall be prepared from the concrete to be used in the work for
compression test on each of the three days operation and thereafter for every 60 cu. m. of
concrete or three days’ work whichever is less, by the contractor in the presence of a responsible
officer of the Department of a rank not less than that of an overseer. If the source of aggregate or
grading is changed, one set of six test cubes shall be taken for each changed batch. Three cubes
Keeping record -
A day to day record authenticated by a responsible officer of the department and the
representative of the contractor, in the proforma approved by the Engineer shall be maintained by
the contractor on the work site and kept open for inspection. This shall contain important
information such as receipt of cement on the work site, daily use with details of use on various
items, time of starting concreting and closer, number of batches through the mixer, source of
water, water cement ratio of concrete, slump, dates of erection of formwork, passing of formwork

track by at least one third width until the entire surface has been rolled. Altemate trips of the roller
shall be terminated in stops at least 1 m away from any preceding stop. In portions in camber,
rolling should begin at the edge with the roller running forward and backward until the edges have
been firmly compacted. The roller shall then progress gradually towards the centre parallel to the
centre line of -the road uniformly overlapping each of the preceding track by at least one-third
width until the entire surface has been rolled.
Any displacement occurring as a result of reversing of the direction of a roller or from any other
cause shall be corrected- at once as specified and for removed and made good. Along forms,
kerbs, walls or other places not accessible to the roller, the mixture shall be thoroughly compacted
with mechanical tampers or a plate compactor. Skin patching of an area without scarifying the
surface to permit proper bonding of the added material shall not be permitted. Rolling should not
Setting and drying: After final compaction of wet mix macadam course, the road shall be allowed to
dry for 24 hours.
Opening to Traffic Preferably no vehicular traffic of any kind should be allowed on the finished wet
mix macadam surface till it has dried and the wearing course laid.
Quality control: Control on the quality of materials and works shall be exercised by the Engineer in
accordance with Section 900.
Rectification of Surface Irregularity
Where the surface irregularity of the wet mix macadam course exceeds the permissible tolerances
or where the course is otherwise defective due to subgrade soil getting mixed with the aggregates,
the full thickness of the layer shall be scarified over the affected area, re-shaped with added
premixed material or removed and replaced with fresh premixed material as applicable and
recompacted in accordance with Clause 406.3. The area treated in the aforesaid manner shall not
be less than 5 in long and 2 m wide. In no case shall depressions be filled up with unmixed and
ungraded material or fines.
Arrangement for Traffic During the period of construction, arrangement of traffic shall be done as
per Clause
Measurements for Payment
Wet mix macadam shall be measured as finished work in position in cubic metres.
16 Providing and applying tack coat on the prepared surface heating by fames in Boiler
and spraying bitumen set footed in bitumen boller on B.T. surface 2.5 kg/10 sqm.(VG-30
bulk bitumen rates are considered to arrive at rates)
Specification:
General : The item pertains to providing and spraying bituminous tack coat over WMM surface
or Bituminous surface.
Material : Asphalt or bitumen shall be straight run conforming to IS:73 or industrial bitumen as
per IS: 702 of suitable consistency satisfying the requirement of physical properties as given in
Test
1/10 mm
cms)
(Maximum)
(Minimum)
Application of Binder :
In bitumen shall be heated to the temperature ranging 150° to 160° C. appropriate to the grade of
bitumen used and approved by the Engineer-in-Charge and sprayed on the base at the rate
specified in Table below. The rate of spreading is in item of straight run bitumen.
RATE OF APPLICATION OF TACK COAT
The bitumen shall be applied uniformly with the aid of either self propelled or towed bitumen
pressure sprayer with self heating arrangement and spraying bar with nozzles having constant
volume or pressure system capable of spraying binder at specified rates and temperature so as to
provide a uniformly unbroken spread of bitumen. The tack coat shall be applied just ahead of the
on coming bituminous construction.
Item to Include : The item includes supplying and laying of bituminous tack coat etc. according to
the details mentioned in this specification and as per directions of Engineer-in-Charge, including
heating all material, labour, transportation, tools, including all taxes, duties, octroi etc., equipment
and machinery.
Mode of Measurement and Payment : Tack coat shall be measured in terms of surface area of
application in square meter. The rate shall be per sqm of area of spraying tack coat.
(°C) Laying
The mix shall be transported from the mixing plant to the point of use in suitable tipper vehicles.
The vehicles employed for transport shall be clean and be covered over in transit if so directed by
the Engineer-in-Charge.
Spreading : The mix transferred from the tipper at site to the paver shall be spread immediately by
means of self propelled mechanical paver with suitable screeds capable of spreading, tamping,
Rolling : After the spreading of mix, shall be thoroughly compacted by rolling by set of rollers at
speed not more than 5 km per hour, immediately following close to the paver. The initial or
breakdown rolling shall be with 8 to 12 tonns vibratory roller or other approved equipment. Rolling
should start as soon as possible after the material has been spread. Rolling shall be done with
care to keep from unduly roughening the pavement surface. Rolling of the longitudinal joints shall
be done immediately behind the paving operation. After this the rolling shall commence at the
edges and progress towards the center longitudinally except that on super elevated portions it shall
progress from the lower to the upper edge parallel to the central line of the pavement. The initial or
break down rolling and final rolling shall be done, with 8 to 10 tonnes static weight smooth (3wheel
steel roller or tandem) as soon as it is possible to role the mix without cracking the roll surface or
having the mix pick up on the roller wheels. The second or intermediate rolling shall follow the
breakdown rolling with vibratory roller of 8-10 tonne static weight as closely as possible to the
paver and be done while the paving mix is still at a temperature that will result in maximum density.
The final rolling shall be done while material is still workable enough for removal of roller marks
with 8 to 10 tonnes static weight. During the initial or break down rolling and final rolling, vibratory
system shall be switched off. The joints and edges shall be rolled with 8 to 10 tonne static roller.
When the roller has passed over the whole area once, any high spots or depressions, which
become apparent shall be corrected by removing or adding mix material. The rolling shall then be
continued till the entire surface has been rolled to 98% of the average laboratory density
compaction, there is no crushing of aggregates and all roller marks have been eliminated. Each
pass of the roller shall uniformly overlap not less than one-third of the track made in the preceding
Item to Include : The item includes providing all material, all labour, plant for heating asphalt,
mixing plant, trolley/truck/dumper, vibratory roller, paver finisher, tools and equipment required to
carry out the work as per specifications.
Mode of Measurements and Payment : The dense bituminous macadam of specified thickness
shall be measured as finished work in Square Meters. The contract rate shall be per Sq. Mtr. and
shall be paid after satisfactory completion of work as per the specifications.
