Today, constellations are less important than they
were in Ancient History. In Ancient times,
constellations were used to create and track the
calendar so they knew when to plant crops and
harvest them. Constellations are useful because they
help stargazers and astronomers recognize specific
stars in the night sky. Constellations are useful
because they can help people to recognize stars in
the sky. By looking for patterns, the stars and
locations can be much easier to spot. The
constellations had uses in ancient times. They were
used to help keep track of the calendar.
Thousands of years ago, ancient astronomers, as
they studied stars in the night sky, saw different
images of objects, animals, and heroes in the
Roman and Greek mythology in the grouping of
stars. A group of stars that are form a certain
pattern is called a constellations. Today
astronomers listed total of 88 constellations. When
you look at the night sky at first glance, it seems
difficult to locate any one group of stars in the
sky.

The Importance Stars for Humans

The reason why stars are so important is because

they helped humans navigate through Earth. When it
was dark these stars would light up the sky giving
people light. In addition, stars are very important
because they make life on Earth. the most important is
the Sun, because without that it wouldn’t be life on
Earth. Earth would just be a rock with ice. Since,
 ancient times are described as forever, hope, destiny,
heaven and freedom. They have also for us people
great importance and we believe that falling stars
makes our wishes. For example, ancient sailors used
the stars to help guide them while they were at sea.
Just like Phoenicians looked to sun’s movement
across the heaven to tell them their direction.

The importance of Sun

Life as we know would not possible without the heat
and light of the sun. The infrared light of the sun gives
as warmth we need to live. The exposition to sunlight
ultraviolet radiation also help us to form Vitamin-D in
our bodies. This vitamin helps us to build teeths,
bones and helps the body to absorb calcium. Also, the
solar energy offers clean power with different benefits
like;

why stars are so important is because they have
helped humans navigate through Earth. When it was
dark these stars would light up the sky giving people
light. In addition, stars are very important because
they make life on Earth.
The Pole Star
The Pole Star or Polaris, is directly above Earth’s
North Pole. A pole star lined up with Earth’s axis,
because of its position over the North Pole, it’s the
only star that doesn’t move so it’s importance for the
orientation. The name Polaris, introduced in the 18th
century, is shortened from New Latin “Stella Polaris”,
Ursa major is a constellation seen most of the year
in the Northern Hemisphere. The Ursa major is the
Latin name for Great Bear also known as the Big
Dipper. It has 3 bright stars and form the Great
Bear’s Tail. The Dipper’s cup form the bear’s
frank. Big Dipper corresponds to the seven
brightest stars in the constellation of Ursa major. It
is known as the plough or the asterism of seven
stars. Big and Little Dipper go around the North
Star or Polaris once a day. The Little Dipper is a
part of Ursa Minor. There are also seven stars in
the Little Differ, but these stars are not so bright as
those in the Big Dipper.

The Stars on Religion

 Star of Bethlehem
The Star of Bethlehem or Christmas Star, appears
only in the nativity story of the Gospel of Matthew,
where “wise men from the East” (Magi) are inspired by
the star to travel to Jerusalem.

Many Christians believe the star was a miraculous

sign to mark the birth of the Christ. The first use for
constellations was probably religious. People thought
that Gods lived in heavens and that they created
them. Many cultures believed that the positions of the
stars were their God’s way of telling stories. So it
seemed natural recognize patterns in the sky, give
them names and tell stories about them. As early as
5,000 years ago, some of the first astronomers
observed the changes in the sun and moon. They
noticed pattern’s in the sun’s rising and setting and in
the shape and the position of the moon on any given
evening. Humanity was not only inspired by the
beauty of the sky, but followed the changes in the sky
over the ages and guided the sky for its activities such
as agriculture, and shipping. In addition, to being
inspired its poetic beauty, the sky continues to serve
as a guide to mankind today. People named the
constellations. Most of the names are still in use
today, stories are being told about the heroes and the
Gods, mythological creatures represented in the stars,
in order to preserve cultures and instill moral values
into the tribesman.
Cassiopeia is a group of stars that for letter W. It is
always near the North star or Polaris. This
constellation named after a queen known as
Cassiopeia.
Orion is a constellation located in the equator.
Greek legend told the Orion was a great hunter.
On his waistline are three bright stars called Tres
Marias or Tatlong Maria .Below this is a bright star
called Rigel at the left knee of Orion. On the right
shoulder of Orion is another bright star called
Betelguese. There are some other known
constellation that are found in the Northern and
Southern Hemisphere. Some of these are
Andromeda which is found in the constellation of
Cassiopeia. Andromeda is the beautiful daughter
of Cassiopeia. Others are Canis major or the

Usefulness of constellation to People Celestial
navigation is travelling by the star. It is the
simplest way by which ancient navigators sail
across the seas and ocean.
Navigators could easily tell where they are if they
know their latitude. Latitude serves as the
imaginary streets parallel to the equator. They
could easily find the place in the upper part of the
earth by referring to the North star. Today,
navigators use an instrument called sextant to find
the ship’s latitude. This instrument has a pointer

the latitude, until the navigator finally locates the
North star.
