PART A: GUIDELINES

Section 1: Introduction to the XMU 4U Programme

The XMU 4U Programme aims to harness the combined strengths of Xiamen University (XMU), China and
Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), Malaysia, regarding educational resources, faculty expertise, and
postgraduate education. The programme aims to nurture exceptional postgraduate students with a global
perspective and comprehensive professional knowledge. XMUM postgraduate students selected for this
programme will undergo joint supervision from both institutions, engaging in full-time research activities or
relevant course studies at XMU. The supporting resources for XMUM postgraduate students shall align
with the standards for international students studying at XMU.

Section 2: Host College and Mode of Study

In principle, all colleges (research institutions, schools/departments) at XMU that meet the criteria for
hosting international students are eligible to welcome XMUM postgraduate students for the research
attachment or study at XMU. Each school/department with postgraduate programmes at XMUM must set
internal application criteria for their postgraduate students’ participation in the XMU 4U Programme.

For the purpose of research attachment at XMU: XMUM postgraduate students must obtain consent
from their main supervisor and be supported by the schools/departments before applying for the XMU 4U
Programme. The programme will primarily focus on specific subjects and research areas or collaborating
with research groups at XMU. The research attachment period will be determined based on research
requirements, emphasising encouraging interdisciplinary research collaborations. The XMU 4U
Programme (research attachment) is joint supervision-based, in which the main supervisor of the
postgraduate students at XMUM must contact and coordinate with the host/supervisor at XMU in
advance to facilitate the arrangement of the XMU 4U Programme.

For the purpose of participation in the course(s) at XMU: XMUM postgraduate students interested in
taking the course(s) at XMU must first obtain consent from the main supervisor (if applicable) and
schools/departments. The school/department with postgraduate programmes at XMUM must ensure that
the mapping of course content, medium of instruction, credit hours, syllabus similarity, etc., shall adhere to
the credit recognition and conversion rules set by XMUM and approved by MQA. The school/department
must contact and coordinate with the respective college at XMU in advance to facilitate the
arrangement of the XMU 4U Programme. The application must consider the programme level, modes of
study and offer of the postgraduate programmes that the students are enrolled in XMUM. The study period
typically spans one semester or one academic year. The postgraduate students are responsible for
ensuring they fulfil the credit requirements upon completing their postgraduate programme.

Section 3: Basic Eligibility of the Applicants

1. Applicant must be enrolled as an active postgraduate student at XMUM.
2. Applicant must be in good physical and mental health.
3. Applicant must hold a valid ordinary foreign passport from a non-Chinese nationality.
4. Applicant must consider and plan the research attachment or study period at XMU in advance
accordingly.
5. The application must obtain consent from the main supervisor (if applicable) and be supported by the
schools/departments.
6. Applicant must fulfil the internal criteria set by their respective postgraduate programmes.

Section 4: Application and Selection Process

The XMU 4U Programme shall follow the principles of openness, fairness and impartiality. The application
shall be initiated by the main supervisor (for research attachment) of the XMUM postgraduate students,
supported by the schools/departments at XMUM, reviewed by the hosting colleges at XMU and joint
supervision from both institutions. Both institutions shall be actively involved throughout the selection and
application process. Depending on specific needs, the colleges and supervisors from both institutions may
sign agreements regarding the scope of collaboration of the research exchange or study of XMUM
postgraduate students at XMU.

1. For research attachment at XMU, the XMUM postgraduate students' main supervisor shall contact the
XMU co-supervisor to confirm both parties’ intention to commit to the XMU 4U Programme. For
participation in the course(s) at XMU, the schools/departments of the XMUM postgraduate students
shall coordinate with the corresponding college at XMU to facilitate the XMU 4U Programme.
2. The applicants shall submit the attached application form (Part B) to the Postgraduate Studies Unit
(PSU) at XMUM.
3. PSU will nominate the qualified applicants and coordinate with the host college for the documentation
required for the application. The finalised documents shall be submitted to the Graduate School and
the Office of Overseas Campus Affairs at XMU within the stipulated timelines.

4. Once the application form (Part B) is completed and approved, the applicants shall log in to the XMU
Overseas Student Application System (http://application.xmu.edu.cn) to complete the registration
within the stipulated timelines.

5. Applicants interested in applying for international student scholarships shall prepare and submit the
required materials before the scholarship application deadline. The possible scholarship opportunities
can be found at this link (https://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/Scholarships/Scholarships_Information.htm).
6. Successful applicants must sign a three-party exchange agreement (template to be provided) with the
supervisors from both institutions. The exchange agreement shall be sent to the Graduate School at
XMU and PSU at XMUM for record keeping.
7. The Office of Overseas Campus Affairs at XMU and PSU at XMUM will facilitate the documentation
required for the XMU 4U Programme.

Section 5: Online Application Materials

Applicants must complete and upload the following application materials through the online application
system.
1. A scanned copy of the passport's main page (ordinary passport, valid for the entire research attachment
or study period in China)
2. Confirmation of enrolment status at XMUM
3. The most recent official result slip
4. Research proposal or study plan (to be written in either Chinese or English).
5. Physical examination records for foreigners (https://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/cn/info/1136/1999.htm),
including X-ray chest images, electrocardiograms and laboratory reports for specific items. All
documents should be either in Chinese or English, with a personal photo attached, an official hospital
seal and a validity period of six months.
6. Relevant documents concerning the nationality status of overseas Chinese students.

Section 6: Related Expenses

1. Tuition and Registration Fees: Selected applicants must be active postgraduate students with no
outstanding tuition fee balance at XMUM. The applicants are exempted from the XMU registration and
tuition fees during their research attachment or study period at XMU.
2. Accommodation Fees: The accommodation conditions for XMUM postgraduate students shall align
with the standards provided to regular international students studying at XMU. The accommodation
fees are generally around 35-65 RMB per day per person at the Siming campus and 1600-4000 RMB
per academic year per person at the Xiang'an campus (students who stay for one semester will pay on
a semester basis). Specific fees for water and electricity charges for international students residing on
campus are detailed in the "New Student Enrolment Guide."
3. Meal Costs: Typically amount to around 1000-1500 RMB per month.
4. Insurance Fees: XMUM postgraduate students must participate in the Comprehensive Insurance for
International Students as stipulated, with an annual fee of 800 RMB per person. Specific insurance
details can be found in the yearly "New Student Enrolment Guide."
5. Besides the above, selected XMUM postgraduate students are responsible for other related expenses,
such as international travel and visa fees, when coming to China.

6. Before coming to China, selected XMUM postgraduate students can apply for scholarships. Those not
receiving scholarship funding must self-support the accommodation, meal costs, insurance,
international travel, and visa fees. Supervisors from both institutions can negotiate the provision of
research assistance allowances to outstanding students.

Section 7: Intellectual Property Rights Protection

1. During their study period at XMU, if XMUM postgraduate students utilise resources from both XMU and
XMUM to generate research outcomes and related intellectual property rights, these will be jointly
owned by both institutions. Mutual agreement will determine the authorship order and other
arrangements based on specific circumstances. Research outcomes include but are not limited to
published articles, inventions (regardless of patentability), concepts, equations, components, data,
techniques, software, and more. Intellectual property rights encompass but are not limited to copyrights,
patents, trade secrets, and more.
2. During their study period at XMU, XMUM postgraduate students must not publicly disclose or publish
any research outcomes resulting from course requirements or using XMU and XMUM resources without
the other party's consent.
3. All parties involved in the project may use research outcomes and related intellectual property rights
for educational or research purposes free of charge. Should any party intend to commercialise or
monetise these research outcomes or related intellectual property rights, both parties must negotiate
and enter into a separate written agreement.
