BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This Chapter introduces the introduction about our research entitled “The Factors
Affecting the Level of Communication Skills Towards Academic Output Among Selected Grade
4 Pupils at Estampar Elementary School” Speech is a purposeful human activity it is not just a
movement or energy or noise but a systematically organized activity (Clark & Yallop 1). It is
even more difficult since. Filipinos are only second language speakers, whose target language
can mostly be heard on radio, watched on television shows, read upon books and other materials.
The sound and quality of the speech is the most important factor in spoken communication.
Whatever position on life, speaking English clearly and phonetically will make a better
impression for everyone (www.numbered.com) so speech is a special gift to and a privilege of a
man (Fletcher 219). Man, then uses this to communicate his thoughts, feelings, desires, and
aspirations to his fellow beings. However, in any cases, man fails in his endeavor to express
himself clearly. Hence the need for man to undergo formal training in effective communication
(Ross 25).

Communicative activities are people centered and powerful in the educational

philosophy. Additionally, these activities are powerful because they are not only direct and
physical but also verbal and intellectual.

The Ability to communicate by means of language is a fundamental necessity or human

society. Furthermore, the development of the skills needed in the Communication is an integral
part of the Department of Education’s (DEPED) curriculum.

This is consonance with the government’s medium. Term development plan which aims to
provide Education for all (EFA). This means that basic education should be given for free to all
elementary pupils and high school students in all public schools. This has been formulated and
implemented so that the learners could enhance their potential in communication.

With these, students are encouraging to see themselves as multi-dimensional entities and
as active participants in the learning process. Not merely passive recipients of knowledge and
wisdom. This is being supported by the learning competencies enumerated in the Philippines
Elementary School Learning Competences (PESLC) (s.2006 p.230) which stipulated those
students should learn to use conversational gambits in face-to-face interaction to obtain
information and express ideas meaningfully. The learner should also know on how to agree or
dis agree. With assertions made by justifying one’s stand in open forum, informative tasks, panel
discussions, and debates on any important issues.

These features clearly present that the aim of learning is for the students to have
communicative competence of the language. However, in Estampar Elementary School where
the researchers are studying, most of the students when they are asked to speak in English, taller
in expressing their thoughts in terms of diction, modifiers, verbs, tenses, and subject verb
agreement with this, they are observed as deficient in the use of the language.

This scenario prompted the researchers to conduct this study because it is necessary that
students should be efficient in speaking the English language. With the fast pace modernization
of the surroundings, students can hardly retain concepts taught orally. They fine materials outside
the school such as computers, television’s, cellphones, and the like more interesting than usual
teaching aids. As a result, they tend to forget and disregard the lesson especially in the language
class.

The purpose of this study is to find out if there is a significant relationship between the
student’s profile under the Factors affecting the level of communication skills towards the
academic output of selected grade 4 pupils at Estampar Elementary School and to device
strategies, plans and eventually proposed actions which eventually provide answers to our
hypothesis perceived.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is anchored on (Social Psychology and Social Identity Theory) why Speaker
seeks to Converge or diverge from the language, dialect, accent, and behavior of them. These
theories will help explain why according to Social Identity theory. A positive social identity by
either joining groups where they feel more Comfortable or doing move positive experienced of
belonging to the groups, they already belong to is what people doesn’t have that much interest in
learning to communicate using other dialect. There are four main Sociological theories first is the
Similarity attraction this theory suggests that “the more similar our attitudes are beliefs, the more
likely it is for them to attracted to us”. (Wikipedia) A theory that shows the wherever we are
belong to or what is our surroundings has a big thing to do with communicating. Second is the
Social Exchange process. This theory “States that prior to acting, we attempt to assess the
rewards and costs of alternate courses of actions”. This is where we tend to choose whatever
actions that would bring grater reward. This theory explains why we lost the confident to speak
on front because were afraid to be judge when we commit mistakes while speaking. Third is the
Casual attribution process. This suggest that “we interpret other people’s behavior and valuate
the individual themselves, in terms of motivations that we attribute as the cause of their
behavior” in this theory this shows the fear of speaker to be misunderstand by the listener. “And
last is the intergroup distinctiveness in this process as theorized by Tajfel argues, when members
of different groups are in contact, they compare themselves on dimensions that are important to
them such as personal attributes, abilities material possessions and so forth”. This theory shows
our aim to be different within a group, for the reasons this may explained why communicating or
speaking is difficult.

Does the level of communication skills of the student depend on; gender, profile of the
student/ teacher and or the capacity of the learners to learn.

ASSUMPTIONS

The factors affecting the level of communication skills towards academic. The cognitive
elements of competence include knowing how to do something and understanding why things
are done the way they are. People can develop cognitive competence by observing and
evaluating the actions of others. Competences can also be developed through instruction.
Individual factors affect our ability to do anything. Not everyone has the same intellectual
ability. At the individual level, a person’s physiological and psychological characteristic effect
competency.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The factors affecting the level of communication skills towards academic output, it is
shows that self-perceived communication competencies may a strong influence on individual
students’ willingness to communicate the degree to which an individual is inclined to initiate
communication with different students in various social setting. Moreover, competences of
communication may be more associated with both willingness to communicate and volitional
communication behavior that is actual communication skill.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to know the competencies of communication skills towards
academic output among selected grade 4 pupils at Estampar Elementary School. Communication
skills enable individuals to understand other and to be understand themselves. Variety aspects
are important in the context of three skills, such as listening, speaking, observing and empathy
communication skills enable individual to understand others and to be understood themselves.
Competences of communication skills has become a focus in higher education over the past
couple of decades as educational policymakers and advocates have stressed a “back to basics”
Mentality (MC Croskey, 1984) The ability to communicate effectively is often included as a
primary undergraduate learning goal along with other key skills like Writing, Critical Thinking,
and problem Solving. You likely haven’t heard professors or university administrators use the
term communication competence, but as we learn more about it in this section. I am sure you will
see how communication competence can benefit you many aspects in your life. Since this
Purpose of the Study focuses on communication in the real world, strategies for developing
competencies of communication are not only to the section.

Competencies of communication skills towards academic output, it is shown that self-

perceived communication competencies may have a strong influence on individual is inclined to
initiate communication with different students in various social setting. Moreover, competencies
of communication may be more associated with both willingness to communicate and volitional

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

Communication Science began in earnest when students of Wilbur Schramm, the founder
of the institute for communication research at the university of Illinois namely David Berlo.
Came to Michigan state university and founded the first general communication arts department
in the early 1950s. though there are other communication science department elsewhere,
Michigan State was the first department in the United State that was dedicated solely to the study
of Communication. (www.otreebasics.com/historyofcommunicationstudies)

International

In the United State undergraduate curricula aim to prepare students to interrogate the
nature of communication in society, and the development of communication as a specific field.

The national Communication association (NCA) recognizes nine districts but often
overlapping sub-disciplines within the broader communication discipline.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

“The factors affecting the level of communication skills towards academic output,”
discussed that competencies of communication skills are a powerful tool that is revolutionizing
children’s learning, communication and play. If properly used, the communication skills can
serve as a medium for acceptable social interaction. The communication skills allow student to
socialize with other children through the increasing the development of communication and
social skills.

This literature is closely related to the current study for it directly mentions the role of
communication (and social skills). Specially to enhance the individual’s communication and
social skills. The present study like the article reviewed aims to establish a connection used by
the students and their impact of their communication skills.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Thit thongkam (2011) Conducted a study about the factors affecting the level of
communication skills towards Academic output among selected grade 4 pupils at Estampar
Elementary School. The research results indicated that the factors affecting the level of
communication skill supported improving students writing skills, and assisted 99 percent of the
samples to pass the course based on the University criteria. Based on the information from
student behavior observation, it indicated that students have better motivation in studying
English, and always performed writing skills. The learning effectiveness is significant at the level
of .50. Satisfaction with studying English after using communicative exercise was positive. The
student satisfaction with learning English after using the competencies of communication skills
was at the level of strong satisfaction (Mean=4.329) or 86.38 percent.

This is Similar to the present study because it both discussed the benefits that the students
get from using the communication in their studies. It showed the improvement on the
communication skills of the students. After performing different exercises on the
communication.
