INTERVIEW CONDUCTION ON THE TOPIC OF “DYSLEXIA”.

This interview is the part of the project of “Mental Health and Psychopathology-I”
under the supervision of Ms. Ayesha Shakeel (Lecturer/Clinical Psychologist).
The interview was taken from Ms. Sadaf Ghous, Msc Psychology (Lahore College).
ADCP in Clinical Psychology (Riphah International University, Lahore.). MA Special Education
(Continue...). Four years’ experience with dyslexic children in The Light School Sialkot and also
an active psychotherapist in Amina Hospital Sialkot. The interview was conducted on Oct 16th,
2020.

The purpose of interview is to get information about Dyslexia. According to Miss Sadaf,
Dyslexia is the mental condition in which the children face difficulty in reading, writing and
alphabet arrangements. She said that environmental factors can also cause Dyslexia but the main
reason is that the part of the brain that relates to reading and writing is deficit. In normal setting,
teacher has no idea that children have Dyslexia because they go through in the normal way. She
said that if we talk about one class then it is possible that 100 to 10 children suffering from
Dyslexia. They have basic mental issues but teacher have no idea about it.
According to her, the pre-school children with Dyslexia have problem in their fine motor
skills (pencil holding & writing). They avoid activities that involve reading and writing. Their
attention span and sitting span is problematic. Dyslexia can be caused by both prenatal (include
mother diet, drug containing medication) and postnatal (children don’t have opportunity to study,
family don’t have resources and awareness).
First of all, a child’s assessment is very important. There are two types of assessment, the
one is formal assessment and the other one is informal assessment. In formal assessment, tools
and different test are apply on child and in Informal assessment, child’s environment, attention
and resources play an important role to test child’s mental health. Dyslexia also relate with
intelligence and motivation like mispronouncing names or words, or problems retrieving words.
She also said that Dyslexia is a different brain organization that needs different teaching
methods. It is never the fault of the child, but to a certain extent it is the responsibility of us who
teach to hit upon the techniques that work for that child. There is no medication currently
approved for treating dyslexia alone. Although no specific treatment can cure Dyslexia, some
people do find that their symptoms change or improve with time.
