Cars Water

Houses Air

Cities Soda

Countries Jam

Pens Money

Pencils Time

If we consider the tabulation, we notice that some words can be

counted whereas others cannot.

Ex we can count the number of tables in a classroom and say that we

have ten tables in the classroom.

But, we can never count Water because it’s a liquid.

When the word is countable, we use many to ask about it

. EX how many tables are there in the classroom?

But when the word is uncountable, we use much to ask about it

EX how much water is there in the Cup?

READ THE FOLLOWING DIALOGUE

Amal : Mum how many eggs do we have in the fridge , I want to make a
cake
Mum: there are six eggs, how much jam do you need?

Amal: not much, just a small amount

Mum: how much milk do you need?

Amal : half a litter do we have it ?

Mum: yes we do don’t worry

Amal: how many people are coming this afternoon?

Mum: only your uncle and his wife

Amal how much time will they stay?

Mum: not much, your uncle is really busy he can’t stay for a long time.

Amal : that’s so nice everything will be ready on time

We notice that many is used to ask about countable nouns, and much is
used to ask about uncountable nouns
