(8 DAY) REGISTRATION LINEARIZATION LAB

Overall Lab Objective:

The purpose of this lab is to become familiar with the electronic and mechanical adjustments used to
baseline the image position of the C1070 series, and then fine tune it to compensate for different
substrates with the user adjustments.

Upon completion of this lab, students will be able to:

1. Correctly load the paper trays for accurate registration.
2. Reset Paper Settings and the Centering Adjustment to default values.
3. Complete the Front Side Adjustments.
4. Perform the Skew Adjustments.
5. Carry out the Back Side Adjustments.
6. Reset the Fiery Tray Alignment settings.
7. Achieve Side 1 and Side 2 “Mirror Image” by using the Both Sides Adjustments.
8. Understand the Scan Adjustments

Estimated Completion Time: 140 Minutes

Required Tools and Documentation Reference:

 C1070 series Service Manual
 C1070 series HTML User’s Guide
 Phillips screwdriver
 Metric ruler
 Ensure that A3 or 11x17 106 g/m2 substrate is available for printing the test charts.
 Have access to the “TP33 Image2.pdf” which is available in the Lab Assets folder of the
C1070 Student Materials (quick reference for test pattern 33 measurements on 11x17 paper
for the North American market).

Precautions/Warnings:
 IMPORTANT: PF trays and main body trays should already be mechanically centered before
starting this procedure.
 For training purposes we will only be adjusting one tray, but you would need to perform this
procedure for all trays that require accurate image registration.
 When printing any type of chart for adjustment purposes, ALWAYS print more than 3 prints
and use the last sheet printed for measurements; unless otherwise instructed.

Before You Begin:

 TASKS listed as Remove or Perform must be completed per the instructions in the manual.
Make sure to note if you are required to perform ONLY certain steps, as sometimes the whole
procedure is not recommended for classroom purposes.
 If the TASK is listed as Review, please make sure to review the entire procedure in the manual
and answer any questions listed.

Task 1: Loading Paper Trays

For training purposes we will only be adjusting one tray, but you would need to perform this
procedure for all trays that require accurate image registration. First we will load the substrate into
the paper tray we are going to adjust. Centering tolerances for the main body trays (1 and 2) will not
be as tight as the Paper Feed Unit trays (PF-707 or PF-602) because the paper width guides can
NOT be adjusted to reduce paper from becoming offset for a tighter tolerance.

TASKS REFERENCES
LOADING THE PAPER TRAY

Important: The following steps are only

required if you are loading paper into a PF-
707 or PF-602 tray. If you are using a main
body tray or LU-202, ensure that the side
guides and trail edge guide are up against
the substrate and then just review the rest of
task 1.
1. Load a few sheets of A3 or 11x17
106g/m2 substrate into the PFU tray you
will be adjusting.

2. Adjust the side guides with both hands.

Note: When moving the side guide, use both

hands as shown in the photo to reduce the
chance of offsetting the guides.

3. Loosen the knob on the left side of the

tray and slide it in the direction of the
arrow, and then close the tray.

Note: This is showing the procedure on a PF-

707; the PF-602 knob will slide opposite of
what is shown here.

4. Open the tray after the lift up plate

reaches the topmost position.

TASKS REFERENCES
LOADING THE PAPER TRAY (CONTINUED)
7. When a gap is too narrow, the substrate can
get caught in the side guides, resulting in no
feed. Verify that the substrate can move in
arrowed direction without friction.

8. Move the trail edge side guide up against

the substrate.

9. Return the knob on the side of the tray to the

original position.

Note: Be aware that the tray will slowly lower, so

make sure to keep your hands free of the lift
plate.

10. Load at least 75 sheets of the A3 or 11x17

106 g/m2 substrate into the paper tray to
perform the rest of this lab.

Task 4: Front Side Adjustments

In this task we will set the magnification, CD skew, and timing adjustments for the front side of the
paper using the machines internal Linearity evaluation pattern (test pattern 16 for A3 size paper or
test pattern 33 for 11x17 size paper).

TASKS REFERENCES
FRONT SIDE ADJUSTMENTS
 1. Verify that Registration Swing Control is turned FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service
ON by setting DIPSW 36-3=1. Mode>System Setting>Software
DIPSW setting procedures
Note: This DIPSW enables the Auto Centering
function. This would be turned off when performing
the mechanical centering adjustment for the trays.

 Tip: With version 15 firmware and higher, diamonds

are printed on the front side lead edge of test pattern
16 & 33. The number of diamonds identifies which
tray the chart was printed from.

2. Perform the Belt Line Speed Adjustment for the FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service
front side using A3 or 11x17 paper. Mode>Machine Adjustment>Belt Line
Speed Adj. (Printer Adjustment)
Note: Reference the C1070 Service Manual for
detailed instructions on how to perform the Belt Line Standard value= 205.7 ± 1 mm
Speed and other Machine Adjustments. Also
the“TP33 Image2.pdf” which is available in the Lab
Assets folder of the C1070 Student Materials is a
good quick reference for test pattern 33
measurements on 11x17 paper (for North America) .

Reminder: Print more than 3 sheets and use the last

sheet printed for measurements for ALL adjustments.

FRONT SIDE ADJUSTMENTS (CONTINUED)
 3. Perform the CD-Mag Adjustment for the front FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service
side using A3 or 11x17 paper. Mode>Machine Adjustment>CD-Mag.
Adjustment (Printer Adjustment)

Standard value= 190 ± 1 mm

 4. Perform the Crosswise Dir. Skew Adj. for the FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service
front side using A3 or 11x17 paper. Mode>Machine Adjustment>Crosswise
Dir. Skew Adj. (Printer Adjustment)

Standard value= difference between

280 mm diagonal lines is 0.84 mm or
less

 5. Perform the Restart Timing Adjustment for the FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service

front side using A3 or 11x17 paper. Mode>Machine Adjustment>Restart
Timing Adjustment (Printer Adjustment)
Note: In the North American marketing area the
machine prints a test pattern 33 from the adjustment Standard value (TP16)= 20 ± 1.5 mm
screens, so make sure you are using the correct Standard value (TP33)= 25.4 ± 1.5 mm
measurement values. The adjustment value for the
Restart Timing Adjustment on test pattern 33 is 25.4
mm, not the 20 mm that is shown in the C1070
Service Manual illustration, which is for test pattern
16.

 6. Perform the Lead Edge Erase Adjustment using FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service

the A3 or 11x17 substrate. Mode>Machine Adjustment>Lead Edge
Erase Adjustment (Printer Adjustment)
Note: Although the specification for the Lead Edge
Erase is 4 mm or less in the service manual, it’s Standard value= 4 mm or less
recommended not to set it below 4 mm, to reduce the
possibility of J-3102 fuser wrapping jams on thinner
stock paper. This adjustment is not necessary on a
C1070P.

Page 10 of 30 19_C1070_Registration_Linearization_Lab.docx
Registration Linearization Lab
Task 5 : Centering Auto Adjustment

The C1070 series has an auto centering system that is unique from Konica Minolta’s other
production machines. The C1070 series moves the paper to the writing position (in the registration
section) instead of moving the image to the paper (with the write unit). The Centering Auto
Adjustment sets the amount that the registration section must move the paper for each tray. This
adjustment is performed when you install the main body, paper feed unit, or there is mis-centering in
a particular paper tray.

TASKS REFERENCES
CENTERING AUTO ADJUSTMENT

1. Go to the Centering Auto Adjustment

by selecting 01 Machine Adjustment >
01 Printer Adjustment > 02 Centering
Adjustment > 01 Centering Auto
Adjustment.

Notice that the adjustment can be performed

for each tray and also for the ADU.

2. Select the paper tray you want to adjust

and then press Print Mode.

CENTERING AUTO ADJUSTMENT (CONTINUED)

3. Press the Start button.

The machine will output 5 Linearity test

patterns.

4. Put down those test patterns! This is

called Centering Auto Adjustment for a
reason. The machine reads the test
patterns and sets the adjustment value for
you.

Note: If the center point is incorrect we will

correct it with the Centering Sensor Gap
Adjustment in the next task.

5. Select Exit Print Mode.

Page 12 of 30 19_C1070_Registration_Linearization_Lab.docx

TASKS REFERENCES
CENTERING AUTO ADJUSTMENT (CONTINUED)

Most likely the adjustment value changed for

the tray you adjusted.

Note: If the adjustment value is over ±200,

this would be an indication that the machine
has to move the paper too much. To correct
this you would need to disable the auto
centering function by setting DIPSW 36-3=0,
and then mechanically center the tray or
PFU. After that you would enable auto
centering and perform this adjustment again.

Tip: For a customer that requires high

accuracy, adjust these values within ±100.

Normally you would perform this adjustment

for all the trays, but we are only adjusting one
for training purposes, so we will move onto
performing this adjustment for the back side
(ADU).

6. Select ADU and then select Print Mode.

Note: There is only 1 value for the Auto

Centering Adjustment for the ADU (back
side), it isn’t done for each tray like the front
side.

7. Select the paper tray you have been

adjusting, and then press the Start
button.

Once again the machine will output 5

Linearity test patterns.

8. Select Exit Print Mode.

Task 6 : Centering Sensor Gap Adjustment

Now we will perform the Centering Sensor Gap Adjustment to set the center position that the auto
centering will maintain for all of the paper trays. This adjustment is performed when you install the
main body, paper feed unit, or clean or replace the centering sensor (PS1) in the registration unit.
The Auto Centering Adjustment should always be performed right before this adjustment.

TASKS REFERENCES
CENTERING SENSOR GAP ADJUSTMENT

1. Select 02 Centering Sensor Gap Adj.

Notice there is only one value for the

Centering Sensor Gap adjustment. This sets
the centering position for all trays and both
sides of the paper since they are all using the
same centering sensor.

2. Select Print Mode.

TASKS REFERENCES
CENTERING SENSOR GAP ADJUSTMENT (CONTINUED)
3. Highlight the tray you have been
adjusting, and then press the Start
button.

Important: The Auto Centering Adjustment

must have been already performed on the
paper tray that you are using for the
Centering Sensor Gap Adjustment in order
for the auto centering system to work
correctly.

A Linearity test pattern is output.

4. Fold the test chart in half to determine if

the image is centered on the paper.

Tip: If you don’t like using this method of

folding the paper in half, go into Test Pattern
Output Mode and print a Test Pattern 40.
This pattern allows you to visually determine
if the image is centered by using the sub
scan lines closest to the edge of the test
chart.

5. Press the Exit Print Mode button.

TASKS REFERENCES
CENTERING SENSOR GAP ADJUSTMENT (CONTINUED)
6. If necessary change the Centering
Sensor Gap value and repeat printing the
test pattern to verify that the image is
centered on the paper.

Note: This adjustment is changing the image

position in the crosswise direction (main
scan). Each step moves the paper 0.1 mm.

7. Once the image is positioned in the

center select Return to get back to the
main Centering Adjustment menu.

Important: In addition to the Centering Auto

Adjustment and Centering Sensor Gap
Adjustment that you just performed, there is
also a “03 Centering Adjustment” available in
the Centering Adjustment menu. It adjusts
the laser writing timing manually to adjust
the image position (same as the C7000
series), to fine tune centering if needed. Skip
this adjustment since we will be using the
Both Sides Adjustment later in this lab for
fine tuning.

Page 17 of 30 19_C1070_Registration_Linearization_Lab.docx

Task 7: Skew Adjustments

In this task we will use both mechanical and electronic adjustments to correct for image skew.

TASKS REFERENCES

SKEW ADJUSTMENTS
 1. Print a double sided test pattern number 16 or 33.
Verify that there is no registration skew when
comparing the front side with the back side of the
test pattern. If a skew exists on both sides of the test
pattern perform the Registration Unit Skew
Adjustment procedure in the service manual to
correct it.

Tip: A light table will make the skew and back side
adjustments easier to perform.

FSM>Q Image Position

Adjustment>Basic Operation>Both
Sides Adjustment (Mechanical
Adjustment and Software
Adjustment)>Skew Mechanical
Adjustment (In The Sub Scan Direction)

IMPORTANT: If only one side of the test pattern is

skewed with respect to the edges of the paper (not
the front side image to the back side image), the
Skew Mechanical Adjustment probably won’t correct
the issue. To determine if only one side of the paper
is skewed and help you isolate the issue, measure
one of the lines that runs along the edge of the paper
(in the sub scan direction) in the 2 positions on each
side of the chart.

Note: The illustration shows test pattern 16, the lines

on test pattern 33 will be in slightly different positions.

Tip: Sometimes the ADU Registration Loop

Adjustment may need to be performed to correct for
skew that only occurs on the back side of the paper.

SKEW ADJUSTMENTS (CONTINUED)

 2. Again print a double side test pattern number 16
or 33. Verify that lines in the main scan direction
on the front side aren’t skewed when comparing
them to the lines on the back side. If a skew exists
perform the Crosswise Dir. Skew Adjustment
procedure in the service manual to correct it.

IMPORTANT: If only the trail edge main scan line is

skewed on each side of the test pattern, don’t perform
this adjustment. We will use the Fusing Unit Skew
Adjustment in the next step to correct it.

Note: The Crosswise Dir. Skew Adjustment is an FSM>Q Image Position

electronic adjustment that adjusts the G5 lens in the Adjustment>Basic Operation>Both
black write unit to correct distortion in the main scan Sides Adjustment (Mechanical
direction. Adjustment And Software
Adjustment)>Skew Adjustment (In The
Main Scan Direction)

 3. Again print a double sided test pattern 16 or 33.

This time verify that the line in the main scan
direction on the trail edge of each side is not
skewed when comparing it with the line on the
lead edge of the other side of the paper. If a skew
exists perform the Fusing Unit Skew Adjustment
procedure to correct it.

Note: This Fusing Unit skew (tail whip) occurs on the

trailing edge of each side of the paper and may also
cause lines in the sub scan direction to skew.

BACK SIDE ADJUSTMENTS

 1. Perform the Restart Timing Adjustment (Side2) FSM>Q Image Position
Rough Adjustment (Select 1 > 2 when printing Adjustment>Basic Operation>Both
test chart) using the A3 or 11x17 substrate. Sides Adjustment (Software
Adjustment)>Restart Timing Adjustment
Note: In this adjustment you are moving the restart (Side 2) Rough Adjustment
time line on the trail edge of side 2 to align with the
restart timing line on the lead edge of side 1. This is a
rough adjustment so we will be fine tuning it later in
this task. Use the service manual reference for
detailed instructions on how to perform the Back Side
Adjustments.

Reminder: Select Restart Timing (Back) when

performing this adjustment.

 2. We want the FD Magnification to be accurate for HTML Users Guide>Settings and

the 2nd side so verify that the Back Side Adjustments>Utility/Counter>User
Magnification Adjustment is enabled by exiting Setting>Common Setting
service mode, and then select Utility/Counter >
User Setting > Common Setting and set Back
Side Magnification Adj. to ON.

3. Perform the FD-Mag. Adjustment for the back FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service
side Offset (ADU) using the A3 or 11x17 Mode>Machine Adjustment > (Printer
substrate. (Select 1 > 2 when printing test Adjustment)
chart).

Reminder: Enter the adjustment value in the Offset

(ADU) field for the tray you are adjusting, since we
are only adjusting the 2nd side in this step.

Note: The Belt Line Speed Adjustment is not

available for the second side (ADU) so we are using
the FD-Mag. Adjustment to ensure the Feed Direction
magnification is the same as the first side.

Task 9: Linearity Test Pattern Verification and Fine Tuning

At this point the back side may not be perfectly aligned with the front side. We will be using the Both
Sides Adjustment in the next task to do that, but in order to achieve tight tolerances, we need our
first and second side adjustments to be correct. In this task we will verify the adjustments we just
made are within specification and make any necessary changes.

TASKS REFERENCES

VERIFICATION AND FINE TUNING

 1. Print a double sided test pattern number 16 or 33 FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service
and do a quick verification on the below Mode> Test Mode
adjustments. Fine tune any adjustments that
aren’t within specification.

Order Adjustment Standard Value

1 Belt Line Speed Adjustment 205.7 ± 1 mm or less

2 CD-Mag. Adjustment 190 ± 1 mm or less

3 Restart Timing Adjustment (TP16) 20 ± 0.5 mm or less

(TP33) 25.4 ± 0.5 mm or less

4 FD-Mag. Adjustment (ADU) 205.7 ± 1 mm or less

5 CD-Mag. Adjustment (ADU) 190 ± 1mm or less (align with front side if possible)

6 Restart Timing Adjustment (Side2) Aligned with front side

7 Verify side 1 is centered. Perform 0 ± 1.5 mm or less

Task 10 : RIP Tray Alignment

Some print controllers also allow you to change the image position of print jobs, so in the field, it may
also be necessary to reset the RIP’s registration adjustments. For example: Fiery “Tray Alignment”
adjustment would need to be reset before performing the Both Sides Adjustment using a print job. If
another RIP, other than a Fiery is being used, make sure to reset any registration related
adjustments.

TASKS REFERENCES

TRAY ALIGNMENT RESET

Do NOT perform this in class; as the RIP should
already be reset to default.

For example, to access Fiery Tray Alignment Reset

you would select Server > Align Tray… > Continue
> Reset from Command WorkStation.

Note: It is recommended that the “Both Sides”

adjustment be used to correct for registration issues
coming from the RIP.

Registration Linearization Lab
Task 11 : Both Sides Gap Adjustment

Depending on the substrate, accurate side 1 to side 2 registration may be impossible to achieve by
using service mode adjustments alone. The Gap Adjustment will fine tune the image
position/magnification on the back side to align it to the image on the front side.
It is intended to help the user compensate for changing substrates, inaccurately cut substrates, and
environmental conditions that can cause substrates to shrink. The customer would want to use the
substrate they will be printing their job on to perform this adjustment.

SCANNER ADJUSTMENTS

 1. Perform the Restart Timing Adjustment (Scan FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service

Adjustment). Mode>Machine Adjustment>Restart
Timing (Scan Adjustment)
Note: For the Scan Adjustments, you want the output
to be the same measurement as the test pattern 16 or Standard value (TP16)= 20 ± 1.5 mm
33 that you placed on the original glass, so use the Standard value (TP33)= 25.4 ± 1.5 mm
same measurement points and measurements as you
did in the Printer Adjustments.

 2. Perform the FD-Mag. Adjustment (Scan FSM>I Adjustment/Setting>Service

Adjustment). Mode>Machine Adjustment>FD-Mag.
Adjustment (Scan Adjustment)
Note: The C1070 series Service Manual shows how
to perform this adjustment with a preprinted test chart Standard value= 205.7 ± 1 mm
