London’s calling

Busy, vibrant and multicultural, London is a city at the

centre of the world and a world in one city. London’s
liveliness stems from the various nationalities that make
up the fabric of the city. The city’s melting pot culture is
8 million strong and well over 300 languages are
spoken here. It’ll make you recognise that there is
different history everywhere you look. Be sure to make
the most of your experience in the English capital by
reading our London planning page to make the most of
your time in this dynamic city.

Londinium – Ol’ London

The Romans were responsible for the city we know

today as London. Once a small city but after a Roman
invasion in AD43, Londinium was found, meaning the
place of the bold one. It was the bridge over the
Thames River turning the city into a road nexus, a system
of Romanic roads and a trading port.

In London, there’s no shortage of historical monuments

and buildings, including the Tower of London, one of
the most impressive historical landmarks dating back to
1006 and the Norman Conquest. A popular destination
in the city as it documents over eight centuries worth of
London’s rich history. From the royal family, to notorious
prisoners and politicians.

Now a Megacity, London’s districts are formed by 32

contemporary boroughs. Each borough has a
population of around 150,000 to 300,000 people. You
will find extremities of lifestyle attractions in the best
locations around the city. We highly recommend the top
boroughs; Islington, Hackney, Greenwich, Camden
and Southwark, some names ring familiar because of
popular culture or television shows, but you can only
get the true experience of each location by being
there.

When to visit London:

Autumn (September, October and November)

London is a place that you can visit at any time.

Although, autumn can be a great time of year to visit this
city as the weather is mild. London’s parks are truly at
their best at this time of year when the air is crisp and all
the leaves fall making the city turn vibrant shades of
orange and brown. Experience London in its astonishing
Royal Parks at this time of year.

If you’re really looking to immerse yourself in the

London culture, this months annual events make London
a great time to visit. Bonfire night in early November, is
widely celebrated, not only by Londoners but the event
is deeply rooted in England’s history. On this night, the
entire city is lit up with spectacular fireworks displays. At
the end of autumn, with Christmas nearing, London’s
streets begin to sparkle with festive lights and
decorations.

Weather:

A summer in London (June, July and August), you’re

looking at temperatures averaging 18°C and can
increase into the low 20s.

London’s autumn season (September, October and

November) enjoys an average temperature of 16°C. As
September progresses the weather starts to cool down,
the daily temperatures begin to drop.

A standard winter in London (December, January and

February) sees temperatures between 2°C and 6°C.
Typically, the temperatures at this time can also drop
below freezing. Occasionally London has encountered
heavy snowfall during winter, although snow isn’t
common.

Spring (March, April and May) and autumn encounter

temperatures of around 11° to 15°C. It is time for rain
showers, blossoming trees and flowering plants.

Foods and local:

In the city of London, the multicultural population

reflects on the masses of restaurants, cafés, markets
and street stalls that are on offer. Known for its party
atmosphere and non-stop nightlife, London has
thousands of stylish bars and cool clubs to explore all
over the large city. On any night of the week you will
find a range of events.

When it comes to culinary experiences London is the

ultimate place to eat the most traditional of meals,
nothing says British food like fish and chips, although a
traditional Kiwi favourite, it comes from good ol’
England. Explore the origins of New Zealand’s European
home cooked meals, get yourself to a local pub and
order a Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding,
alternatively order a classic hearty staple such as
bangers and mash, both meals will satisfy your hunger
and keep your warm on a cold London day. If you are
more culinary adventurous order black pudding, this
traditional English dish might need some persuading for
your taste buds to tackle, but those convinced will most
likely crave more of this dark salty pudding.

For a true Londoner’s living experience, ditch the

homogenous hotel and consider staying in an elegant
and cosy Victorian house.

Hot spot suggestions:

The London Eye is a truly remarkable landmark, this is

the best way to see the sheer enormity of London. More
than a Ferris wheel ride – London Eye’s rotating
attraction gives you a privileged bird’s-eye view of the
historic city, ensuring that you will get those spectacular
views of the city’s skyline and the iconic landmarks like
Westminster Abbey and Big Ben. Offering the ultimate
opportunity to see the city at a glance, with the whole
of London laid out for you.

In Southwark, Central London, the Borough Market is

renowned for artisan food and fresh organic produce.
This is the largest and oldest food market in the city. A
hot spot if you fancy sampling some world cuisine,
there are a variety of stalls offering cheeses, breads,
pesto, chutneys, spices, fresh vegetables and foods
from around the world.

Primrose Hill has a character all of its own, you will

encounter some astounding scenic views of London at
the summit of this grassy hill. On summer weekends, the
park is packed with the locals enjoying a picnic or a
leisurely stroll admiring the remarkable scene over the
city skyline. At the top of the hill is one of the finest
views you will find in London.

Known for its sprawling cluster of shops and markets as

well as all things counter culture, the suburb of Camden
offers an interpretation of London street life. From
bargain shopping and its masses of pubs and bars,
Camden is the place to be for many a Londoner. It is
also home to some of the hottest live music venues in
Europe.
