nation. Lalu Prasad, Te-

casion. As per the elec-
tion commission notifica-
tion, the filing of nomina-
tion started on March 4
and Monday is the last
date. The candidates can
withdraw their names till
March 14 and voting fol-
lowed by the result will
happen on March 21.
ED probing
investments of
drug lord Jaffer
Chennai, March 11
(IANS) The ED is probing
the investments made by
drug lord and former
leader of the ruling DMK,
Jaffer Sadiq, who was
recently arrested by the
CMYK
Narcotics Control Bureau
(NCB) after a four-month-
long manhunt. The ED
has registered a case
and is probing the alleged
investments made by Jaf-
fer Sadiq in Tamil and
Hindi movie industries.
There were also alle-
gations that he had made
payment to the DMK
leadership and also in-
vested heavily in many
real estate projects in
Chennai, Salem, Madurai
and Coimbatore.
Plea in SC seeks
to restrain
Centre from

Election

New Delhi, March 11
(IANS) A plea has been
filed in the Supreme
Court to retrain the Union
government to not fill the
recently arisen vacancy
in the Election Commis-
sion in accordance with
the legislation which ex-
cludes the Chief Justice
of India from the process
of appointment of the
Chief Election Commis-
sioner (CEC) and other
Election Commissioners
(ECs). It may be recalled
that Election Commis-
sioner Arun Goel re-
signed from his post on
March 9.“There will not
be a stay. We cannot stay
a statute like this,” had
said the Bench, also
comprising Justice Di-
pankar Datta.
Five including

in road accident
in Samastipur
Patna March 11
(IANS) Five persons, in-
cluding JD-U MLA Aman
Bhushan Hajari, sus-
tained injuries after his
vehicle collided with a
truck in Bihar's Sa-
mastipur district late on
Sunday night.
Following the acci-
dent, the local villagers
rescued the victims and
admitted them to a prima-
ry health centre in Mus-
righarari block, from
where they were referred
to the Sadar hospital in
Samastipur after initial
treatment.
The accident oc-
curred on NH 28 near
Musrigharari at around 11
p.m. on Sunday. The driv-
er of the truck managed
to flee from the spot.

Five dead after bus catches fire in
UP; CM announces compensation

Ghazipur (UP), March 11 (IANS) At least five per-
sons have died after a private bus caught fire near the
Barhi village in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district on
Monday, confirmed a government spokesperson.
The ill-fated bus reportedly came in contact with a
high-tension wire, which led to the blaze.
According to sources, the bus coming from Mau dis-
trict was carrying about 50 passengers to a wedding
function when the accident took place.
Senior officials have reached the spot to supervise
the rescue operations.
Local people gathered on the spot in large num-
bers, but could not muster the courage to go near the
burning bus which is said to be fitted with CNG cylin-
ders.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adity-
anath has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each
to the kin of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 each to the
injured persons, along with free medical treatment.

be indifferent to critical differences
between two contenders to White House
Among the world’s major powers, India is ar-
guably the least apprehensive about the presi-
dential rematch in the US between incumbent Joe
Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump. Un-
like most US allies, India has benefited from pro-
ductive relationships with the administrations of
both.
The bipartisan commitment — between the
Democrats and Republicans — for a solid part-
nership with India has expanded since President
Bill Clinton’s visit to India 24 years ago this month.
The expansive scope and intensity of India’s re-
lations with the US today stand in contrast to mu-
tual indifference in the Cold War years and seri-
ous tensions in the 1990s over the issues of nu-
clear non-proliferation and Kashmir.
In the 21st century, the US has emerged as
India’s most valuable strategic partner, with grow-
ing engagement in trade, technology, investments,
regional security, and global governance. Under-
girding the new dynamic is unprecedented politi-
cal comfort between India’s current leadership and
the US establishment. Indian officialdom has built
a working relationship with both Republican and
Democratic policymakers.
Yet, Delhi would be unwise to take the rela-
tionship for granted and underestimate the impor-
tance of the impending presidential election in the
US that could accelerate the rearrangement of
the global economic and political order. The last
eight years under Trump and Biden have already
heralded unprecedented change. If Trump re-
versed the four-decade-old US policy of befriend-
ing China, Biden has persisted with his predeces-
sor’s determination to confront Beijing’s expan-
sionism in Asia and the quest to rewrite global
rules.
This shared understanding of China between
Trump and Biden has boosted the India-US part-
nership amidst Beijing’s aggressive policies to-
wards Delhi. India, however, has yet to come to
terms with the changed US policy towards global
trade under Trump and Biden.
The two leaders agree that the mantra of glo-
balisation, which the US has preached for de-
cades, has not worked for the American working
people. They also insist that global trade rules,
defined by the World Trade Organisation, must
be rewritten. India’s trade policy has struggled to
deal with this new reality. While the Biden admin-
istration had not made trade policy a matter of
confrontation with India, Trump will adopt a differ-
ent tone and direction.

Mumbai, March 11 (IANS) Nationalist Con-
gress Party (NCP) Chief Sharad Pawar on Mon-
day criticised the BJP over the alleged "misuse"
of the Central probe agencies against the op-
position to create "fear" ahead of upcoming Lok
Sabha elections.
“BJP-led government’s action indicates that
it wants to create fear for the opposition candi-
dates thereby keeping them away from
the poll process. While the ED is always
after the opposition leaders, they have
not investigated a single BJP minister.
There is no action being taken against
leaders like Hasan Mushrif from Maha-
rashtra who migrated to BJP in the wake
of action by ED and other probe agen-
cies,” Pawar said.
He said that from 2005 to 20-23, the
ED registered 5,906 cases of which 25
cases have been disposed, meaning the
disposal rate was as low as 0.42 per cent
while the conviction rate was merely
0.40 per cent during the same period.
“BJP government’s budget for ED was Rs
300 crore in 2022 and Rs 404 crore in 2023,’’
said Pawar.
He said that BJP’s role have opposition lead-
ers under ED’s scanner is visible as 147 lead-
ers against whom the action was initiated, 95
per cent are from the opposition parties (115
members of opposition).
Pawar said ED initiated action against 22
Congress leaders; 19 TMC leaders; 11 NCP
leaders; 8 Shiv Sena leaders; 6 DMC and BJD;
RJD, BSP and SP 5 each; 3 AAP leaders; 2

compulsory for drilling
bore wells in water
crisis-hit Bengaluru
Bengaluru, March 11 (IANS) The
Bangalore Water Supply and Sew-
erage Board (BWSSB) in its latest
order, has made it compulsory to get
permission from the authorities be-
fore drilling bore wells, an official
note released by it on Monday stat-
ed.
The order has been issued in the
interest of utilising ground water ef-
ficiently and also in the interest of
the public.
The order stated that legal ac-
tion would be initiated against peo-
ple if bore well drilling was under-
taken by them without permission
from the authorities concerned in
the limits of Bengaluru, under col-
umn 11 of the Karnataka Ground
Water (Regulation and Control of
Development and Management)
Act, 2011.
The BWSSB officers have been
directed to file violation complaints
in this regard and initiate legal ac-
tion against the owners of the bore
wells.The orders will come into force
from March 15 and applications can
be submitted on the BWSSB’s por-
tal from that date.
“Priority would be given to pub-
lic bore wells and for private persons
the ground water level, need and
expert opinion will be considered for
granting the permission,” the re-
lease stated.The ground water in
Bengaluru city has been depleted
by the shortage of rainfall and many
bore wells have gone dry.

harashtra's MahaYuti (grand alli-
ance) government comprising the
BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP claimed
on Monday that the state continues
to be a favoured investment desti-
nation.
Earlier, in the run-up to the Lok
Sabha elections, the MahaYuti gov-
ernment earmarked at least
Rs 84.10 crore (Rs 1.40 crore
per day) for a special publici-
ty campaign till March 31.
The government has also
rolled out the advertisement
claiming that “Magnetic Ma-
harashtra” continues to be the
favoured investment destina-
tion.
In another advertisement
titled “Resolve for rural devel-
opment”, the state Rural De-
velopment has listed out a slew of
initiatives to boost development.
The MahaYuti wants to project Ma-

tive actions and closely monitor ac-
tivities to maintain law and order, he
said.The DGP added that a compre-

Lucknow, March 11 (IANS) The
Hazratganj police in Lucknow has
filed a charge sheet in the Alaya
Apartment collapse case, accusing
former SP MLA Shahid Manzoor of
culpable homicide.
Charges under the Criminal Act,
conspiracy and other IPC sections
have also been filed against him, his
son and three others.
Police said evidence from CCTV
footage and photographs obtained
hours before the collapse of Alaya
Apartment had confirmed that Sha-
hid Manzoor was involved in the
excavation work at the building
which led to the tragic incident,
claiming three lives.
The divisional commissioner's
committee, chaired by Roshan Ja-
cob, also corroborated these find-
ings in its report, said the police.
The accused include Shahid
Manzoor, his son Nawazish Shahid,
nephew Mohammad Tariq, Fahad
Yazdani and Saim Yazdani.
The police have invoked the
Gangster Act against all five individ-
uals and are preparing to attach
their properties.
Shahid Manzoor, a resident of
the Delhi Gate area in Meerut dis-
trict, allegedly exerted pressure on
individuals to sell a plot of land
where Alaya Apartment was
constructed.Nawazish and Tariq
subsequently bought the plot and
structed by the Brihanmumbai Mu-
nicipal Corporation (BMC), includes
a twin-tunnel running below the
Malabar Hill, and the entire phase
one project -- which will be toll-free
as announced by the government -
- is expected to be completed by
May 2024.
Once operational, the MCR will
slash the road commute time from
around 60 minutes to barely 10 min-
utes, saving time plus fuel, and is
expected to be extended from Worli
to Dahisar (north-west Mumbai) and
beyond, in the coming years, offi-
cials said.
Chief Minister Shinde and Dep-
uty Chief Ministers Fadnavis flayed

Sena (UBT) leaders to claim credit
for the prestigious project which
picked up momentum only after the
MahaYuti government took power
in June 2022, and completed it af-

ister Fadnavis said that while he did
all the backdoor work with the Cen-
tre, the Shiv Sena (UBT) President
Uddhav Thackeray showed presen-
tations of the MCR and won two
BMC elections, and did not even
invite him (Fadnavis) for the bhoomi
pooja of the project though he was
the CM.“However, it was the Mah-
aYuti government which completed
this project. If Shinde had not be-
come the CM, it would have been
delayed for another 4-5 years.

raids on three areas in southern Lebanon and
fired 30 shells on seven towns and villages in

electric vehicles (EVs),
charging infrastructure
provider Statiq on Monday
inaugurated its maiden EV
charging station in the holy
city.
Located at Laxman
Kunj smart vehicle multi-
storey parking, the station
has been installed by Sta-
tiq with fleet partner
MyEVPlus.The charging
station is equipped with
one 60 kW DC charger
(dual gun) and four 9.9 kW
AC chargers, each featur-
ing three sockets of 3.3
kW.The infrastructure al-
lows simultaneous charg-
ing for up to 14 electric
vehicles, the company said

stretch (146 Km) of Nation-
al Waterway – 1 (River
Ganga)”. The contract, val-
ued at Rs. 98.06 Crores.
The contract duration is 3
years and further extend-
able by 2 more years.
To promote Inland Wa-
ter Transport (IWT) in the
country, 111 Inland Nation-
al Waterways (NWs) have
been officially notified in
India for the purposes of
inland water transport as
per The National Water-
ways Act, 2016. Out of the
111 NWs, 106 were creat-
ed in 2016. The NW net-
work covers around
20,275.5 km. NW-1, 2, & 3
are already operational.
Cargo as well as passen-
ger / cruise vessels are ply-
ing on these waterways.
India has about
20,275.5 kms of navigable
waterways which comprise
of rivers, canals, backwa-
ters, creeks, etc. About 126
Million Metric Tonnes
(MMT) of cargo is being
moved annually by Inland
Water Transport (IWT), a
fuel - efficient and environ-
ment - friendly mode. Its
operations are currently
restricted to a few stretch-
es in the Ganga-Bhagi-
rathiHooghly rivers, the
Brahmaputra, the Barak
River, the rivers in Goa, the
backwaters in Kerala, in-
land waters in Mumbai and
the deltaic regions of the
Godavari - Krishna rivers.
Besides these organized
operations by mechanized
vessels, country boats of
various capacities also op-
erate in various rivers and
canals. and substantial
quantum of cargo and pas-
sengers are transported in
this unorganized sector as
well.
