XF105 series System description

1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION

This system manual describes the operation of

the steering wheel switches (SWS).
The steering wheel switches can be used to
1
operate the telephone and a number of vehicle
functions from the steering wheel. This means
more ease of operation for the driver.
There are two different models of steering wheel
switches:
5-switch steering wheel switches

1.2 OPERATION OF STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES

The steering wheel switches (C916) consist of

1 two operating units that are located in the 3

steering wheel. The left-hand operating unit (1)
contains switches and visibility lighting. The right- 2
hand operating unit (4) contains switches,
visibility lighting and an internal control unit. The 1 4
two operating units are connected by the
connecting cable (2). The right-hand operating
unit has a 4-pin connector (3) that is connected to
the clock spring (D994). The 4-pin connector has
two power supply wires and two CAN wires.
Note: K102019
The steering wheel switches (C916) consist of
24V
two operating units that are connected by a cable.

I-CAN
The steering wheel switches must be seen as a
+ -
single component. The operating units cannot be
replaced separately.

Communication via I-CAN

The steering wheel switches communicate with
the VIC-2 via the I-CAN. The internal control unit
of the steering wheel switches converts the status
of the switches into CAN messages. When a
switch is operated, the VIC-2 receives a
message. The VIC-2 processes the message
into, for instance, a command for the DMCI
engine management system or a telephone
function display on the DIP. There is non-stop
communication between the VIC-2 and the
steering wheel switches pertaining to the status
of all the switches.
Also, error messages can be sent from the
steering wheel switches to the VIC-2. These error
messages are stored in the VIC-2 and can be
read using DAVIE. An error code will generate a
warning on the DIP.

Visibility lighting
The switches have visibility lighting that can be
dimmed when the vehicle lighting is switched on.
The VIC-2 sends a CAN message on the degree
of dimming by the instrument lighting dimmer to
the steering wheel switches. The steering wheel
switches convert this CAN message to a duty
1
cycle that actuates the visibility lighting.
Note:
The visibility lighting is executed in LEDs. These
LEDs cannot be replaced separately. If one of the
LEDs of the visibility lighting is defective, the
steering wheel switches must be replaced.
