2. Explain why coral reefs are declining around the world?

LEARNING ACTIVITY:

2. “WATER PATROL” (Optional)

Materials:
This activity will need some basic workshop materials (Manila paper, pentel pens,
masking tape, etc.), an inquisitive mind & a lot of team work.

Duration:
A half-day to conduct the survey & another half-day to analyze the information & propose
solutions.

Activity Guide:
a. Map out sources of water in your school/community. In the map, identify where the
deep wells, streams, creeks, water, pump, faucets, toilets & other water facilities are
located.
b. Survey these water sources & facilities. The following are some items you may note down: are they
functional; do they leak; are they hygienic, especially drinking fountains? How are they used? Do people
leave the faucets open? Do they use too much water?
c. Be very sensitive in conducting your survey as you don’t wish to antagonize the students or other
community members whose support you will need to implement solutions.
d. Report your findings to the authorities. Monitor the actions done to respond to your report. If the problems
are not addressed, try to find out why.
e. Present your findings about water practices to the larger student body or the barangay. What practices
can be improved in order to conserve water. Who will be responsible for monitoring this?
f. In areas where there may be an irregular supply of water, try to determine the schedule of water
distribution & the practices involved in collecting & storing water. Are the storage facilities clean? Is there
enough water stored to provide for the required volume?
