~ Valve Position Indicator - type VPI
~
• The Danfoss Volumetric Position Indicator type VPI is designed to locally or remotely indicate the position of
{ hydraulically operated Actuators with determined displacement.
.9
The VPI can be placed assembled with the directional valve on a common manifold remote from the Actuator,
thus avoiding cables and direct mounted installations in the field and the costs involved. In this way the pro-
blems are overcome as to detecting the valve position, when the Actuator is submerged and/or installed in
Hazardous Area.
The VPI continuously indicates the position of the valve by measuring the actual quantity of oil flowing to or
from its Actuator. The VPI is preset by Danfoss to match the specific Actuator displacement.
The rendered indication is proportional to the displaced oil and thus to the actual Actuator position.
The total VPI programme includes possibilities of pressure and temperature compensation, and the program-
me is designed for solving indication purposes in any environment.

Valve Position
VPI Indicator A1
Application:
The VPI is designed to indicate the position of hydraulically actuated valves and the indicator arrow in the display
will move from fully open to fully closed or vice versa when a volume equal to the actuator displacement passes
through the unit. Observe the min. and max. flows when dimensioning a hydraulic system including VPI indicators.
Also observe the various factors influencing the accuracy and reliability of this direct position indication method.

VPI-V:
This indicator is only used for visual indication of the valve position. It is normally used with N-block and
I manual pilot valve. VPI-V can be used with TC-block or PTC-block.
This indicator is used for visual and electric (ON/OFF) indication of the end positions of the valve (open/close).
The VPI-E is normally used with N-block or TC-block, but VPI-E can also be used with PTC-block. VPI-E is
available with "normally open" switches, but can as a variant be supplied with "normally closed" switches.
VPI-C:
This indicator is used for visual and continuous indication with analog electric signal (potentiometer).
This type is used wherever electric indication of the intermediate position of the valve is desired.
VPJ-C can be used with N-block, TC-block or PTC-block.

TC-Biock Temperature Compensating
VPI Product Programme Block for VPI A1
General Description: TC-Biock
Temperature Compensating Block primarily for indication of end positions
(VPI-V or VPI-E). The TC-Biock allows the expansion/contraction of the oil
in the 'system caused by major temperature and pressure variations
without influencing the end stops and the switch functions of the indica-
tor. The Block is provided with Cetop-3 connection for mounting of pilot
valve.
The combinatio.~ of the VPI indicator and the TC-Biock can be used for
all DSH-actuators and is primarily used at on/off controls.
Hydraulic Symbol:
i Functional Description: Pilot valve side/CETOP-3 connection
i ~
The function of the TC-Biock is to allow the oil only to flow through the VPI
in the required direction (locks and acknowledges the el. on/off signal).
r·
BA PT .,
i
.~
The undesired contra-flow is bypassing the VPI, thus avoiding an el. signal
failure with resulting "alarm signal«.
, This undesired oil flow is caused by the temperature expansion/contrac-
.~ lion of the oil and also by a fluctuating pressure in the system at an on/off-
~ operated actuator.

Leakages When starting-up and later on at least Monthly
once a month the hydraulic system must
be checked up on external and internal
leakage and possible leakages must be
repaired in order to avoid suspension
of service.
Internal leakage can be noticed by
frequent starting of hydraulic pump(s).
If internal leakage appears, locate it
by separating the systems one by one.
Mounting When mounting parts after superv1s1on or
on replacement, great care must be taken
for clean conditions and environment.
Hammer with iron-head must not be used.
Remember to remove rags, plugs, etc. that
have been used for covering against dirt .•

replaced and afterwards every second year. 2 yearly
Check that the oil specified or correspon-

When-changing the oil the tank must be
cleaned for sediment and dirt.
Oil level Check the oil level every week in order to Weekly
be sure there are no external leakages.
The hydraulic pumps must never run without
oil.
) The oil level may change slightly due to
environment temperatur conditions change.
