Examples

[I ran to the theater] and [I saw a movie].

If [John gives Sarah $100], then [she will be happy].

= [Lebron will win the MVP] or [Steph Curry will win the MVP].

[The Cavs will win the NBA Championship] if and only if [Lebron plays well].

Movie.

Not a proposition b/c it does not express a complete thought

Component Proposition:

= “Critics think the Dark Knight rises is a good movie.”

“The Dark Knight Rises is not a good movie.”

Why care about propositions???

State equivalency between propositions

■”I’m not not going to the mall.” “I am going to the mall.”

■”John can’t play drums or guitar.” = “John can’t play drums and John can’t play guitar.”

State logical dependence between propositions

If one proposition is true/false, what other propositions must be true or false?

Determine validity of arguments

■ Different logics exist for different types of propositions.
