A spiral spring is suspended on the boss of a retort stand. The position, of the pointer on the spring is
noted on the graduated scale near it and recorded. When a body of mass m=20g is suspended at the
free end of the spring and as shown in the diagram above, the new position, H, of the pointer is noted
and recorded. The body is then set into vertical oscillation. The time, t for complete oscillation is
measured and recorder. Repeat the procedure for m=30g, 50g, 100g, 200g and 250g.

A (I) Read and record the masses m

(iii) Evaluate e=Hi-Ho

(iv) Read and record the corresponding time t

(v) Determine the period T of the oscillation and evaluate T2 in each case

(vi) Tabulate your reading

(vii) Plot a graph of m on the vertical axis against e on the horizontal axis

(viii) Determine slop s, of the graph

(ix) On a separate sheet plot a graph of T2 o the vertical axis against m on the horizontal axis

(x) Determine the slope, s2 of the graph

(xi) Evaluate k=4 π 2 [Take π=
2 7
(xii) State two precautions you would take to ensure accurate results i.e you were performing the
experiment in the laboratory
(b) State four system that can be made to perform simple harmonic motion
