Preliminary Round of BAJA SAEINDIA 2023

With insights from the previous edition, BAJA SAEINDIA 2023 will witness the event as an
amalgamation of Physical and Virtual platforms. This edition consists of 3 Phases, of which the first
two phases will be conducted virtually while the third phase will be conducted in the physical
mode. The Preliminary Round (Phase 1) of BAJA SAEINDIA 2023 is scheduled to be held on 17th &
18th September 2022.

Understanding the Preliminary Round

• Similar to BAJA SAEINDIA 2022, Preliminary Round of BAJA SAEINDIA 2023 will be a non-
elimination round. The scores obtained in this round will be added to the total score
obtained by the team in all the events during the ‘Phase 2’ and ‘Phase 3’ event.
• The objectives of the Preliminary Round of BAJA SAEINDIA 2023 event are as follows:
➢ To acquaint the teams with the objectives of the BAJA SAEINDIA 2023 event.
➢ The teams should have fundamental knowledge of Automotive Engineering like Chassis,
Body, Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Engine, Transmission, CVT, Driveline, Electricals,
Electronics, etc. and Design Criteria, Manufacturing Criteria, Materials, Calculations,
CAD/CAE Analysis, Vehicle Dynamics, Ergonomics, DFMEA/PFMEA, Performance
Testing, Validation & Certification for the above components/ systems and vehicle as a
whole.
➢ The teams are required to familiarize themselves with the technical guidelines and limits
for the design of the BAJA vehicle as per the latest BAJA SAEINDIA rulebook. Teams can
download the latest rulebook from: https://bit.ly/BSI2023_Rulebook
➢ To make various concepts and lay down complete technical specifications of the
proposed vehicle along with a CAD model, CAE Analysis, selection of sub systems and
execution of team plans.
➢ To understand Make or Buy Decisions based on facilities & confidence available and
perform estimated Cost Analysis, Weight Analysis, Team building, MS Project Planning,
etc.
• Entire evaluation process will be conducted digitally on a Video Conferencing Portal.
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of the Video Conferencing Software will be released
separately.
• Maximum 5 team members per team, which must include either Captain or Vice-Captain,
will be allowed for this round. The presenter details will be collected separately later.
Note: Prior to the commencement of Phase 1 teams will be required to register ALL their
members through the BAJA SAEINDIA website with the necessary details. Teams are
requested to bear this in mind while filling out the presenter details.
• One Faculty member, in addition to the team members, will be allowed only as a silent
observer.
• Teams must strictly adhere to their respective timelines.
• RETURNING TEAM (OLD TEAM): The teams / colleges / institutions, who had participated
in the Main Event of BAJA SAEINDIA 2020 or 2022 shall be called as Returning Team (Old
Team). Participation in the ‘Main Event’ means, the team should have built their BAJA
vehicle, brought it to the main event and had got their team registered at Pithampur or
Punjab site for on‐site stages of competition in BAJA SAEINDIA 2020 or 2022.
• NEW TEAM: The teams / colleges / institutions, who could not participate in the Main Event
of BAJA SAEINDIA 2020 or 2022 shall be called as New Team. Additionally, the teams who
are switching to another category (i.e., mBAJA to eBAJA and vice versa) will be considered
as New Team. The teams not covered under the Returning Team (Old Team) criteria shall
also be considered as New Team.
• Teams must prepare for the two sub-events i.e., Presentation of vehicle design and Quiz.
