Learning Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student conducts classroom and
Target/Goal outdoor investigations following home and school safety procedures and uses
environmentally appropriate and responsible practices. The student is
expected to:
(A) identify, discuss, and demonstrate safe and healthy practices as outlined in
Texas Education agency-approved safety standards during classroom and
outdoor investigations, including wearing safety goggles or chemical splash
goggles, as appropriate, washing hands, and using materials appropriately
Objective Students will be able to name examples of which practices are safe and
unsafe in a scientific setting, within a 1st grade context.
Time Needed
Anticipatory Set ● Students will be told that they will be participating in experiments
● Students recognize we have established expectations and rules
Lesson Hook (Engage ● Have students think of examples of unsafe things to do, or ways they
students and Grab their could end up hurt, in everyday life
attention)
Make connections to
previous lessons/learning
Instructional ● Good examples of getting easily hurt are horseplay, like running around
Procedures and tripping, or having something thrown at you.
● Safety is important in science because what we can do in science can
Introduction/teaching of be potentially harmful; one could get sick, a cut, something unpleasant
new material in their eye, spill or knock something over, and we have ways to avoid
Detailed lesson that.
explanation (step-by-step) ● Lab protocol is defined, with handwashing, closed toed shoes,
protective lab glasses/goggles, horseplay, and listening skills all clearly
Include ALL links for mentioned, defined, and understood by students.
videos, slide shows, etc.
● Consequences should be harsh for students who do not follow
behavior protocol in potentially unsafe lab environments. (Won’t be
threatening for first graders, but good for habit building)
Check for ● What are examples of unsafe lab practices? I’m looking for five.
Understanding/ - Goggles
Assessment - Handwashing
(Independent Practice) - Shoes
- Horseplay
Describe, briefly, what - Listening ears to instructions
students will do to show
you that they have
mastered (or made
progress toward) the
objective.
Lesson Conclusion ● We need safety in order to be safe! I need complete control to make
sure everyone goes home in one piece. (No boo-boos.)
Wrap it up with mastery in
mind
