WEATHERING THE STORM...

T
he past 18 months have been unprecedented,
and with everything that’s been thrown at the
electrical industry, it is not a surprise to find
that when compiling this year’s TOP 50 Electrical
Contractors report, AMA Research has found
an overall decline in performance from the pre-
pandemic level.
The pandemic hasn’t been the only thing to worry
about. With Brexit’s impact on the supply chain,
the industry has experienced shortages of staff,
materials and drivers, resulting in disruption to
ongoing projects.
However, it’s the hard work and adaptability of
those within the electrical sector that has allowed
vital services to remain open throughout the
pandemic. By embracing change and demonstrating
incredible resilience, the industry has been able to
weather the storm, becoming one of the quickest
industries to come out the other side.
New trends present new opportunities
Despite the chaos, this year has seen some great
positives with current trends leading to increased
business opportunities for electrical contractors. LISA PEAKE

For instance, the trend towards a greener future has
led to an increase in opportunities in areas such as
renewables, energy efficiency, smart buildings and
electrical vehicle infrastructure. These trends will
continue to gain traction throughout 2022.

In percentage terms, 30 per cent of the top 50 electrical contractors saw a decline in profit, however, 10 companies outperformed their
competitors and saw a growth in profit of over 50 per cent. Dornan Engineering Services saw the greatest increase in pre-tax profit out
of the top 50 electrical contractors, increasing from £98 million to £470 million according to its latest figures.

initial impact of the pandemic to come back
stronger and more dynamic than ever.
A buoyant construction market, a fast
paced housebuilding and residential
development sector and an increased
consumer focus on home improvements
during the pandemic have all contributed
to high demand for electrical contractors.

over the past year and we’re continuing to
innovate and collaborate with professionals

lectrical contractor performance
declined during 2020/21 compared
to the previous year, with average
turnover growth for the leading 50 companies
in this market of -2 per cent, although 27
businesses had a decline in turnover. The
table is split almost evenly between those
reporting turnovers in 2021 and those
reporting turnover in 2019/20. Comparison
of these subsets showed the impact this
pandemic has in the industry.
There has been significant volatility in profit,
however, with profit margins decreasing
heavily for the top 10 electrical contractors
averaging a decline of over 100 per cent.
Preliminary figures suggest construction
output declined by 2 per cent from Q1 2019
to Q1 2021, with output falling significantly

across the electrical sector to ensure
both our product development and our
service delivery meet the changing needs of
the industry.

also launched products aimed at providing
affordable tools for apprentices, such as our
Safe Isolation Apprentice Kit, supporting the
next generation of professionals entering the
during 2020, however, ease of restrictions
and the success of the vaccination
programme allowed to a steady recovery in
construction output. The residential sector
saw dramatic swings in 2020 as a result of
the lockdown measures in Q2. While output
has bounced back swiftly, new orders have
been slower to return. The new orders
pipeline is the lowest it has been for nearly a
decade at a total of £17.7bn for 2020.
Both trade and business investment have
suffered as result of the uncertainty from
Brexit and Covid-19. The Covid pandemic
saw trade fall by close to 30 per cent, and
business investment 25 per cent. ONS data
suggests that exports returned to pre-
Brexit levels in June, however they remain
approximately 16 per cent below pre-

electrical contracting sector. And, of course,
we continue to bring exciting new products to
the UK market, such as our Gen II Lever
Wire Connectors.

After falling by 22 per cent in Q2 last year, it
recovered by 19 per cent over the remainder
of 2020 but then fell again by 11 per cent in
Q1 2021, before flatlining in Q2. As a result,
all sectors of the construction industry are
experiencing downturn, along with the rest
of the economy, with only minor recovery
anticipated for the remainder of 2021.

Wire Connectors
Our Gen II Lever Wire Connectors are the
new kid on the blog, but they are building
on a rich tradition of industry leading wire connector innovation

Mechanical Facilities Services (MechFS) has seen the largest growth in turnover, increasing by 72 per cent. MechFS is a leading mechanical and electrical
contractor, operating throughout the UK and Europe. Growth in MechFS turnover is partly attributed to its expansion during the pandemic. Gratte Brothers also
saw a large growth in turnover, increasing by 70 per cent. Only 12 of the top 50 electrical contractors saw an increase in turnover above 10 per cent and of the
remaining companies 27 saw a decline in turnover.

and measurement equipment that includes Clamp Meters, Fork (split
jaw) Meters, Digital Multimeters (DMMs), Voltage Meters, Non-Contact

commercial, domestic and apprentice use.
Safety
Electrical safety is always important and our range makes it quick and
easy to lock out and tag isolations to keep everyone safer on site. This
range includes individual padlocks, hasps and MCB lock-out devices,
along with a variety of safe isolation kits, including kits specifically
designed for commercial, industrial, domestic and apprentice use.
Hand Tools
Our range of strippers, cutters, pliers, screwdrivers and knives are
built to last and designed for excellent grip and ergonomics, our hand
tools have been specifically developed for electricians.
Data Installations
Our data installation range has been designed to make datacom
projects faster to install with greater consistency. Our FT-45 Feed-Thru
modular plugs and crimp tool speed up and simplify data terminations
by eliminating the need to trim conductors to a precise length before
inserting the cable. Unlike the plugs with closed ends usually used
for RJ45 connections, the FT-45 Feed-Thru Modular Plugs feature
open channels that allow the conductors to be fed completely through
the connector before crimping. This lets installers visually check
conductor order and if necessary, remove the connector, reorder the
conductors and replace the connector before the FT-45 tool crimps
and trims the cable in one step.

inspection and there is a check port for testing, enabling full safety and
consistency verification at the point of installation.
Versatility built in
Designed to provide a versatile and cost effective solution for faster,
easier wire terminations, the Gen II range is re-useable and allows the
use of multiple wires of different sizes and types within the same lever
connector. All models can be used with solid or rigid stranded cables
of between 0.2mm2 and 4.0mm2, while the units are suitable for use
with any flexible cable from 0.14mm2 to 4.00mm2. Each connector
has a built in wire strip guide to enable installers to check the correct
stripping length and, for solid and stranded cables, once the wire has
been stripped, it can simply be pushed in with no need to lift the lever.
For flexible wires, the lever is lifted before inserting the conductor
and clamping it into place. The Gen II Lever Connectors have been
designed to prevent errors and ensure consistency, enabling wire
terminations to be carried out more quickly with less risk of snagging.
Safety and compliance
Making wire terminations faster and simpler has an important role to
play in safety, but testing and certification are also integral to safety
assurance. The IDEAL Industries Gen II Lever Wire Connector range is
CE marked, UKCA and UL listed and is also ENEC accredited and fully
compliant with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
Convenient & Cost Effective
As always, IDEAL Industries has listened to the marketplace to
understand what different types of users need and as a result the
Gen II Lever Wire Connectors are available in a variety of pack sizes,
including boxes, bags and kits. Amongst the kits, is a new Twin &
Earth Kit, which includes a stripper, cutter and 20 each of the 32A
rated SpliceLine, two- and three-port Push In and Gen II Lever wire
connectors, along with a 20-piece bag of assorted 32A connectors,
which includes the popular SpliceLine and three-port Push In, as well
as the new two- and three-port Gen II Lever wire connectors.
Wide-ranging Applications
The ease of installation and versatility across different wire types and
sizes makes the IDEAL Industries Gen II Lever Wire Connector range
suitable for a wide variety of applications. The innovative product has
been designed for any application up to 32 amps, including radial and
final ring circuits.
The compact design enables easier fitting in junction boxes and
enclosures, where space is often limited. This can be particularly
useful in lighting and access control installations, where multiple
conductors often need to come together in a tight space.
