Identify terms related to culture.
1. Race refers to the identification of individuals or groups by shared genetic heritage and
biologic or physical characteristics.

• Ask students to identify how each of the following has influenced their own cultural
beliefs: race, ethnicity, diversity, and assimilation.
1. Communication refers to verbal and nonverbal methods with which individuals and groups
transmit information.
2. Cultural beliefs, customs, values, and morals are passed from generation to generation
through communication.
8. Family patterns include the roles and relationships within families that establish models for
responsibility, dominance, and decision making.
9. The types and amounts of foods included in an individual’s diet are often culturally
determined.
10. Health beliefs are categorized as magico-religious, biomedical, and holistic. Differing health
beliefs are embraced by different cultures and impact health practices.
11. Health practices include the use of Western, folk, or indigenous medicines.
12. Cultural health concerns include obesity, which has become an increasingly global health
issue according to the World Health Organization. It affects both adults and children alike.
Some of the factors contributing to this include a sedentary lifestyle, genetics, poor dietary
habits, and psychosocial and cultural factors.
