Catch-Up Intervention

Procedure
Component Duration Activities and Procedure
Pre-Reading 1 hour LISTENING:
1. Write the following words on the board:
Atis Guava Mango Avocado Apple
2. Read the words to the students. As you read, tell them
to clap once if they hear / æ / (teachers should model
the sound at least three times to the class; / æ / not
/ey/) at the beginning sound of the word. Clap twice if
they hear a different beginning sound.
READING
1. Write the following in a chart.
A is for Ana, A-A-Ana.
And Anita is so cute. Aha!
A is also for Andy, A-a-andy
Arman, and Anthony also starts in A.

A is for astronaut
Going to the moon
Adventures of the outer space
A-A-A-A yow!

A is for ambulance
Running down the road
The safety of the people, even young and old.

2. Have a tune of your choice/or make a rap out of the


poem.
3. Tune out aloud the poem yourself first from the
beginning to the last line first to guide your students.
4. Let the whole class follow along with you as you tune
out/rap the poem.
5. Now that they know the tune, tell the students to stand
every time they hear the / æ / sound (teachers should
model the sound at least three times to the class) as
you and the class sing/rap the poem.
6. Tell the students that the letter A sounds /æ/. (Write
on the board the letter A and small letter a)
7. After singing/rapping the poem, ask the students the
following:
a. Will you please say, /æ/? Repeat after me, /æ/.
(demonstrate the sound to the students)

b. Which words begin with an /æ/ sound? Will


you please incircle those words?
8. Show a cut out of a big and small letter Aa.
9. Say: This is letter Aa. One of the sounds of letter Aa
is /æ/ as in Andy or Ana. Remember that the name of
the letter is Aa but it commonly sounds as /æ/.
10. Show the letter again and ask:
a. What letter is this?
b. What is one of the sounds of letter A?
11. Say: The sound /æ/ of letter A is what we are going to
learn today.
During Reading 1 hour /æ/ in the Initial Sound
1. The teacher will read first the title and the story.
Demonstrate proper pronunciation of /æ/ sound as
you read.
Andy and Annette
There was a little boy named Andy.
He has a sister Annette. Annette wears an
apron with a letter A on it.
One day they heard a loud sound
AAAAAAAAAAAAA (sound this out as /æ/).
Andy and Annette saw a big ant.
Andy and Annette got the atis.
They took the atis away from the ant.
As they ate the atis, they said AAAAAAA.
2. Now let the whole class read.
3. As the class reads, you may ask a student (preferably
who needs intervention) to sound out the
prolonged /æ/ from the story.
4. After reading, as the following to the students:
a) Who are the siblings in the story?
b) What does Annette wear?
c) What did they hear?
d) What did they saw?
e) Why did they take away the atis away from
the ant?
f) Why do you think they say AAAA while
eating the atis?
5. Now, let the students encircle the words that begin
with letter A.
/æ/ in the Medial Sound
1. Tell the students that the /æ/ sound may also be in the
middle of consonant sounds.
2. Show the following examples:
hat bat cat rat bag

3. Instruct the students to underline the /æ/ sound.


After Reading 1 hour Individual reading assessment
1. Write the following words in a flash card or roll chart.
2. Call the students individually and let them read each
word aloud.
3. Once they commit an error, give them an immediate
feedback and guide them on how to read and
pronounce the word. Take note of their errors.

4. Note: If you think the students are ready to read in
sentence level, you may design a sentence which
contains a word from the word list.
5. Note your assessment observation using the following
rubric. Write the words that you asked the students to
read and put a check mark on the corresponding
behavior/skill they met after reading.
