1 Safety Rules
During the measurement there is a high voltage on electrodes!

The instrument is to be operated only by one responsible and qualified

person that is demonstrably acquainted with its function, and has
adequate qualification according to the relevant laws. Only this person
can be entrusted with the key for unblocking of the safety STOP
button. This is to be done right before the start of the measurement.

The duties of the responsible person are as follows:

 To ensure that the main switch is off during any manipulation with the
instrument and all the time except the time of measurement!!!!
 Before each start of the measurement:
To check the instrument and the accessories used. If some damage is
discovered, the measurement must not be carried out!!!!
To arrange a clear way of communication between the persons
involved in the measurement and to mark the area of the measurement
by the warning plates (or another signs) according to the relevant laws
of the particular country.
To ensure, that the electrodes are neither in touch nor in the vicinity of
any conductive objects.
 To monitor continuously all the area of measurement. To ensure that
neither persons nor animals come to the vicinity of measuring
electrodes. If a person or animal approach the measuring system, the
responsible person has to stop the measurement by pressing the STOP
button.

In case of necessity any person can press the red main switch and thus
disconnect the measuring electrodes from the power supply!

In case of nonobservance of these safety precautions, the producer

is not responsible for security of persons, animals or property!

2 Basic Instructions
2.1 Theory

fig. 1 Principle of geo-electrical measurement

Principle of geo-electrical measurement is injecting direct (DC)

current into the measured soil using two current electrodes C1, C2 and
measuring induced potential on two potential electrodes P1 and P2.
Apparent resistivity ρa [Ωm] is calculated from electrode positions, current
and potential by the equation:

V
a  k
I
where ΔV [mV] is measured voltage, I [mA] is current and k is
geometrical factor depending on the individual distance between the
electrodes (fig. 2).

fig. 3 Reflected image of the current electrode

Three electrode arrays (pole-dipole) and two electrode arrays

(pole-pole) are also used for geo-electrical measurement. Remaining
electrodes, called infinite or remote electrodes, are away enough from those
electrode arrays and their influence can be ignored.
With sufficient number of measured points we can do 1D, 2D, 3D
and also 4D (time monitoring) data processing for imaging of studied
structures.

8
ARES II
Several positive and negative current pulses are measured for
elimination of noise and drift (e.g. influence of artificial and telluric
currents, electrode polarization)
The standard deviation of the measurement δ (St-dev) is calculated
as follows:


1  ( R  R) 2

 100%
R N 1

where R is measured resistance, R is arithmetic mean value and N

is the number of repeated measurements.

Also potential decay curve after switching current off can be

measured. The residual potential (which disappears in tenths of milliseconds
or units of seconds) is measured in several time windows. Those values are
used for calculating of induced polarization (IP) as ratio of measured
potential in a certain IP window and the potential before switching current
off.

ARES II with its 10-channel receiver allows simultaneous

measurement of several potential responses and thus makes the
measurement faster. 10 channels (from R0 to R9) are measured between
potential electrode couples P1-P2 to P10-P11.

ARES II

2.2 Methods of geo-electrical measurement

2.2.1 VES – vertical electrical sounding
This 1D method is used for evaluation of changes of apparent
resistivity and of induced polarization in vertical direction. Thus it is
convenient for measurement on mostly horizontal structures with different
resistivities. Wide range of applications in the frame of geological survey
allows measurement till the depths of hundreds of meters.
Measurement of VES is done on one place with different
measuring depths reached by changing of electrode positions. Typical
measurement is performed with Wenner – Schlumberger array, in which
individual depths are reached by means of increasing distance of current
(resp. potential) electrodes. The result of the measurement is a curve of
apparent resistivity and IP, which is interpreted e.g. by means of software
IPI2WIN. It is possible to assemble several VES into one section as well.

fig. 5 Interpretation of VES – apparent resistivity and IP

10
ARES II

fig. 6 Interpretation of several VES in a section

Measuring of VES is done by prescription, which is uploaded into

device memory.

Accessories necessary for VES measurement:

• 4 electrodes, more for multi-channel measurement. Non-
polarizable electrodes can be used as potential ones.
• 4 single conductor cables (usually on reels) with proper
length, more for multi-channel measurement. The core of
current cables should be at least 1.5 mm2, for cables
length over 1 km recommended core size is 2.5 mm2.
Note: For Schlumberger array the distance of current
electrodes is about 5-6 times greater than depth of
measurement.
• VES & Profiling adapter – only for multi-channel
measurement, which way allows preparing more potential
pairs in advance and then automatic measuring any of
them using the prescription. It is necessary to operate only
the instrument and the current electrodes during the
measurement so multi-channel measurement is more
comfortable and faster than single-channel.
• GPS receiver – optional, not necessary.
• Recommended power source is battery pack or car battery.
• Recommended software for interpreting data is IPI2WIN.

11
ARES II

2.2.2 RP – resistivity profiling

This 2D method serves for mapping of apparent resistivity and
induced polarization at a certain depth below the surface. It is sensitive
especially for vertical boundaries of different resistivities. This way it is
possible to determine conductive (ore bodies, tectonic lines) or non-
conductive (caves, quartz seams) structures or areas with different rocks
(sands, clays).
The measurement is done with chosen electrode configuration
(which determines the depth of the measurement) on a grid of measured
places. The result of the measurement is curve of apparent resistivity and IP
on measured profile (1D), or their map (2D).
Using of multi-channel system, as ARES II, allows measuring of
several depths at once. Those values from different depths can also be
interpreted in 2D or 3D model, e.g. by means of Res2DInv respectively
Res3DInv software.

fig. 7 Interpretation of RP measurement

12
ARES II

Accessories necessary for RP measurement:

• 4 electrodes, more for multi-channel measurement. Non-
polarizable electrodes can be used as potential ones.
• 4 single conductor cables, more for multi-channel
measurement.
• VES & Profiling adapter – needed only for multi-channel
measurement.
• GPS receiver – optional, not necessary.
• Recommended power source is battery pack or car battery.
• Recommended software for mapping is Surfer, for 2D
(resp. 3D) modeling Res2DInv (resp. Res3DInv).

2.2.3 SP – self-potential measurement

This method serves for investigation of potentials that occur on the
observed line or area without the connection of the current source. Thus it is
possible to get information about chemical pollution plumes
(electrochemical potentials), about raw material deposits (metal ore,
graphite), about leakage and flow direction of underground water (filtering
potentials). This method can be used for industrial purposes like earth
currents and ground corrosiveness evaluation for civil engineering and
pipeline construction or for monitoring of waste dump insulating sheets.
The measurement passes with two potential electrodes only. Usually the
potential against the reference electrode placed on a fixed point (located
usually inside of the measured area) is measured. The result of the
measurement is a curve of electrical potential IP on measured profile (1D),
or a map of it (2D).

Accessories necessary for SP measurement:

• 2 electrodes, recommended are non-polarizable ones.
• 2 single wire cables.
• GPS receiver – optional, not necessary.
• Recommended power source is battery pack or car battery.
• Recommended software for mapping is Surfer.

13
ARES II

2.2.4 2D – multi-electrode measurement

2D is up-to-date method which uses fully automatic measurement
of sections of apparent resistivity or induced polarization. It allows doing
very detailed investigations of both vertical and horizontal structures and
imaging of objects with different resistivities. There are various measuring
arrays convenient for optimum sensitivity for different kinds of structures
(vertical / horizontal structures, cavities). This method is used e.g. for
determination of geological sections, imaging of fissures, water leakages,
slope deformations and landslides.
For the measurement a multi-electrode cable is needed, whose
number of outlets is grounded on electrodes at regular intervals on straight
line. The device is automatically choosing the electrodes to be used for
measurement by chosen prescription. It is possible to obtain many hundreds
of measured points in an hour. Several times more points can be obtained
using 10-channel ARES II. The result of the measurement is 2D section,
which should be interpreted in proper software (e.g. Res2DInv). It is also
possible to assemble several 2D measurements for interpreting in one 3D
model (so called pseudo 3D measurement).

fig. 8 Interpretation of 2D measurement

Measuring of 2D is done by prescription, which is uploaded into

device memory.

14
ARES II

Accessories necessary for 2D measurement:

• Multi-electrode cable (active or passive version). One
multi-electrode section contains 4 – 12 outlets (depending
on spacing between electrodes). Individual sections can be
connected together up to 60 000 outlets (resp. 200 outlets
of single-channel multi-electrode cable). The total length
of multi-electrode cable determines reachable
measurement depth.
• T-piece (allows connecting the device between any two
active cable sections).
• Electrodes (for all multi-electrode cable outlets).
• O-rings for attaching of the outlets to the electrodes.
• 1 or 2 single conductor cables (usually on reels) with
proper length for infinite electrode connection. They are
necessary only for measurement of pole-dipole and pole-
pole arrays.
• Recommended power source is car battery or AC / DC
converter.
• Recommended software for data interpretation is
Res2DInv (resp. Res3DInv).

15
ARES II

2.2.5 3D – multi-electrode measurement

3D is a method very similar to 2D measurement. The multi-
electrode cable is not laid in a straight line, but in a plane (like a snake). The
method leads to true 3D measurement and also 3D interpretation of studied
area. The result of the measurement is 3D model, which should be
interpreted in proper software (e.g. Res3DInv).

fig. 9 Interpretation of 3D measurement

Accessories necessary for 3D measurement:

• Same as for 2D measurement

16
ARES II

2.2.6 Cross borehole (BB), Borehole-surface (BS)

measurement
BB and BS are methods derived from 2D measurement. By placing
multi-electrode cable into a borehole the precision of the depth in the
interpretation is much better and also the depth of investigation is higher if
size of the surface available for measurement is limited. Typical application
is mapping of geological structure following analyzes of drilling cores.
In BB measurement the multi-electrode cable is put into two
boreholes (the space between boreholes is measured). In BS measurement
only a part of multi-electrode cable is put into one borehole while the rest of
multi-electrode cable is on a surface.
The result of the measurement is 2D section, which should be
interpreted in proper software (e.g. Res2DInv). It is also possible to
assemble several 2D measurements to interpret it as one 3D model (so
called pseudo 3D measurement).

fig. 10 Interpretation of BB measurement

Accessories necessary for BB / BS measurement:

• Same as for 2D measurement, but instead of multi-
electrode cable the switch box with multi-core cable
suitable for borehole measurement has to be used.

17
ARES II

2.2.7 USD – user defined measurement

The USD measurement is suitable for special cases of apparent
resistivity and induced polarization measurement. The measurement is done
using multi-electrode cable. Each measured point is defined separately in
USD (as a difference from other methods, which use multi-electrode cable
and which automatically measure different electrode configurations over the
whole multi-electrode cable).
The apparent resistivity computation expects that the electrodes are
placed in a single row (like 2D multi-cable survey). If the electrodes
configuration is different, the correct apparent resistivity has to be manually
recomputed after data download.

Accessories necessary for USD measurement:

• Same as for 2D measurement

2.2.8 GPS continual measurement

GPS continual measurement is similar to RP measurement. It is a
specific kind of measurement suitable especially for measurement in water.
Special multi-conductor cable is pulled over the water surface.
The simplest type of measurement uses a special multi-conductor
cable (without any switching electronics) which is connected directly to the
ARES main unit. The measurement is done repeatedly using the same
electrode configuration (same multi-conductor cable outlets).
More advanced type of this measurement uses a special multi-
conductor cable with higher number of outlets, which is connected to the
adapter for passive multi-conductor cables. The adapter allows sequential
measuring of more electrode configurations and thus increasing of number
of measured layers. The measurement is done by cyclic repetition of pre-
defined electrode configurations (different multi-conductor cable outlets).
Measured data are stored together with GPS coordinates obtained
from connected GPS receiver.
The result of the measurement is 2D section (a number of
measured depths), which should be interpreted in proper software (e.g.
Res2DInv). The track calculated from GPS movement is used as horizontal
axis in the section.

18
ARES II
Accessories necessary for GPS continual measurement:

• Special multi-electrode cable (array of outlets is pole-

dipole).
• GPS receiver.
• Recommended power source is car battery or AC / DC
converter.
• Recommended software for data interpretation is
Res2DInv (resp. Res3DInv).

fig. 11 Interpretation of GPS continual measurement

2.2.9 Time monitoring measurement

Each measurement, which uses standard multi-electrode cable (2D,
3D, BB, BS, USD) can be done automatically at preset intervals. This
allows monitoring of time changes of apparent resistivity or also of induced
polarization. The device is switched off between individual measurements
so it has zero current consumption from power source. At a time of
scheduled measurement the device is switched on and the measurement is
done fully automatically. The result of the measurement consists of separate
2D or 3D sections, or it is also possible to interpret time measurements
together to evaluate difference between them (e.g. by means of Res2DInv).
It is also possible to use computer to display online information about
device status if the device is equipped with the remote control set (RS232,
Radio, GSM).

2.3 Measuring parameters

2.3.1 Measuring position

VES, RP and SP
VES, RP and SP measurement passes in a grid of points (profiles,
stations).
You are asked to set P-step, S-step and the position of the first
measured point before beginning of the measurement.

Note: If 10-ch Pole-Dipole array is measured in resistivity profiling

(RP) and if measured data are to be interpreted in 2D or 3D model (by
means of software Res2DInv resp. Res3DInv) it is necessary to choose
S-Step as an integer multiple of coefficient a (a is the distance between
potential electrodes).

20
ARES II

2D and USD
The position of 2D and USD measurement is determined by the
position of the beginning of the profile and by the direction of the profile.
The direction can be chosen from X, Y, -X and -Y.
Other important parameter is the electrode distance and the profile
length. If we are planning to measure several 2D (resp. USD) profiles to
obtain one pseudo 3D profile (2D, resp. USD profiles will be combined) it
is necessary to choose the same electrode distances for all profiles in X
direction, to choose the same electrode distances for all profiles in Y
direction (may vary from electrode distance in X direction) and also to
choose the beginnings of all profiles to fit uniform grid with electrode
positions. The same rule must be kept if several 2D or USD profiles
measured in one line are to be interpreted in Res2DInv software together
(e.g. the second 2D profile can be a continuation of the first one).
Profiles can be numbered for better orientation.

Cross borehole (BB)

The position of Cross borehole measurement is determined by the
position of the first borehole and by the direction to the second borehole.
The direction can be chosen from X, Y, -X and -Y.
Other important parameters are borehole depth, borehole distance
and electrode distance. If a more detailed resolution is required (than the
distance of borehole multi-electrode cable outlets allows) it is possible to
reach result adequate to smaller distance of electrodes by the measurement
procedure similar to procedure of roll-along.
Example of more detailed measurement: The cable outlet’s
distance is 5 m and the required resolution is 1 m. Measurement is done
with Cable spacing = 5 m, Electrode spacing = 1 m. First we will hang the
multi-electrode cable to the 1 m depth and do the measurement then we will
hang the multi-electrode cable to the 2 m depth and do the measurement and
so on up to the last depth 5 m.
Usually both multi-electrode cables in both boreholes are shifted
together. Only in case of maximum required resolution each position of
multi-electrode cable in 2nd borehole can be measured against each position
of multi-electrode cable in 1st position.
Profiles can be numbered for better orientation.

Borehole-Surface (BS)
The position of Borehole-Surface measurement is determined by
the position of the borehole (i.e. the profile beginning) and by the direction
of the profile. The direction can be chosen from X, Y, -X and -Y.

2.3.2 Measuring method

We can choose electrode array for each method of measurement
except self-potential measurement (SP). Various measuring arrays are
convenient for optimum sensitivity for different kinds of structures (vertical
/ horizontal structures, cavities).
In case of infinite electrodes are used (pole-dipole, dipole-dipole)
those infinite electrodes are always placed on fixed position outside the
measured profile. Infinite electrodes should be at least 5 times farther than
the maximum current electrode distance of the measured array. Only in that
case the influence of infinite electrodes can be omitted (the error is less than
5 %). In case of impossibility to ensure sufficient distance the positions of
infinite electrodes can be included in calculation of the geometric factor.

Exact geometric factor – The geometric factor is calculated

exactly, positions of infinite electrodes
are included.
Approximate geometric factor – Simplified calculation of
geometric factor, position of infinite
electrodes is not included.

RP
Several preprogrammed electrode arrays can be chosen for
resistivity profiling or also new electrode configuration can be defined.
Basic arrays are preprogrammed as single-channel ones, ie. for
measurement of them 4 electrodes are needed. Each array is given by its
type and parameter a, resp. na. The result of the measurement of basic array
is a curve of apparent resistivity and IP on measured profile (1D), or a map
(2D).

Use of multi-channel system ARES II allows measuring of several

depths at once. Those values from different depths are also possible to be
interpreted in 2D or 3D model, e.g. by means of Res2DInv respectively
Res3DInv software. For proper interpretation it is necessary to keep the
orientation of the electrodes in the direction of the profile, and also to
choose coefficient na as an integer multiple of coefficient a.
Beside parameters a, na the parameter Dipoles-count is also
defined, which determines the number of channels used for measurement.
Channels from R0 to R9 are measuring potential between electrodes from

VES measurement
VES measurement is done according to a prescription, which is
loaded into device memory. There are all necessary configurations of
electrodes for measurement of selected method in the prescription. Each
prescription contains a definition for measurement optimized for one-
channel and multi-channel measurement. ARES II is delivered with the
prescription for measurement:

Schlumberger.vss (Wenner-Schlumberger)

GPS continual measurement

The measurement can be done with adapter for passive multi-
conductor cables or without it.
For measurement without adapter a pre-programmed electrode
array can be chosen (e.g. 10-ch Pole-Dipole).

2.3.3 Position of multi-electrode cable, roll-along

Roll along is a procedure applicable for measurements with the use
of multi-electrode cable (2D, 3D, BB, BS, USD), which allows to measure
longer profiles than is the length of used multi-electrode cable. The depth
range of the measurement is not increased by this procedure, but the length
of the profile can exceed many tens of kilometers.
When all necessary parameters of the measurement (the length,
resp. depth or width of the profile, electrode distances, measurement
method, S-min and S-max) are set, the device will generate complete data
matrix that is to be measured. The set (file) can be measured provided the
multi-electrode cable is long enough to cover the whole measured profile, or
it can be measured in individual parts by means of using roll-along.

Profile measurement by means of roll-along: At first the multi-

electrode cable is installed on the beginning of the profile and the
appropriate part of the set is measured. Than one or more of multi-electrode
cable sections are moved from the beginning to the end of the multi-
electrode cable (so the position of the multi-electrode cable is shifted by
several electrodes) and next part of the set is measured. The procedure is
repeated until the whole profile is measured.
If multi-channel measurement is done it is important to roll-along
as many cable sections as possible to avoid measuring of multi-channel
points in many parts, which leads to prolongation of measurement time.
However it is necessary to avoid undesirable omitting of certain parts of
measured section (saw effect on the bottom of section), if roll-along step is
too rough.
Example: We need to measure up to the depth 50 m, for achieving
of that depth we need to use seven sections. We have 10 sections, so we will
measure using 10 sections and move 3 sections while roll-along.
Note: Alternatively it is possible only to disconnect the first section
and to connect another one (prepared in advance) to the end of the multi-
electrode cable. Then you can start the measurement, and while it is
running, you can prepare the first disconnected section to the end of the
cable for the next swapping.
There is a measurement with twice roll-along shown in the
following picture. Six small circles show a six-channel measurement, which
is able to be measured at once by choosing proper position of multi-

electrode cable, but due to roll-along procedure the measurement is divided

depth of a borehole is lower than the length of the borehole multi-electrode
cable, the negative distance of the 1st electrode from the surface can be set.

2.3.4 Measured zone shape

There is a parameter of 2D and USD measurement, which allows
specifying the measured zone shape. Reduction of the measured zone
(connected with shortening of the measuring time) is suitable for example
for such measuring profiles that are linked to other profiles

electrodes. Line electrode configurations can be optionally measured only
in right angles or together with diagonal directions.

2.3.6 S-min, S-max

S-min and S-max are parameters for surface measurement with
multi-electrode cable (2D, 3D, USD). These parameters allow limiting the
depth range of measurement and thus shortening the measuring
time. The parameter can be set separately for X direction and Y
direction for 3D measurement.
 S-min – minimum distance between the first and the last used
electrodes of the measuring array. By setting this parameter
you can limit the minimum depth range of the measurement.
 S-max – maximum distance between the first and the last used
electrodes of the measuring array. By setting this parameter
you can limit the maximum depth range of the measurement.

2.3.7 Pulse length, IP windows

Pulse length is a parameter for all measurements except SP, which
determines the length of current pulse. It can be set from 0.2 s to 30 s. The
pause between pulses is approximately 45% of pulse length, if not longer
due to induced polarization measurements. Typical pulse length for
resistivity imaging is 0.3 s, for IP imaging it is 0.5 – 2 s.
The device allows measuring up to 20 windows of induced
polarization. The first IP window starts 5 ms after switching off the current
pulse. IP windows lengths can be set individually in multiples of 20 ms
(resp. 16 ms for filtering mains frequency set to 60 Hz) in the range from
20 ms (or 16 ms) to 30 s. First IP window (during first 10-20 ms) may be
partially affected by electromagnetic and capacitive coupling in measuring
cables (especially in long lines).

40
ARES II
It is possible to use several preset values of IP windows.:

 Newmont’s standard (0.45 – 1.1s) – It is based on standardized

measurement of induced polarization. The first IP window has a
length of about 0.45 s, the second one has a length of about 0.65 s.

 Full decay 200 ms / 9w

 Full decay 500 ms / 13w
 Full decay 1000 ms / 16w
 Full decay 2500 ms / 20w
– The total induced polarization measuring time is divided into an
appropriate number of IP windows (the number after the slash)
so that the discharge induced polarization curve is measured
with sufficient precision to enable analytical processing.

 None – No induced polarization is measured

 User defined IP windows – The number of measured IP windows

and also the length of each of them can be set individually.

2.3.8 Measurement optimization

The actual measurement is performed completely automatically
according to several predefined parameters:

 Potential – The minimal level of potential required to be measured

on potential electrodes.
Choose the value according to the actual measurement
(resistivity / induced polarization), depth of the survey and noise
level. For resistivity measured under normal conditions 10 mV
level is recommended. For induced polarization at least 100 mV
level is necessary to get good measurable values in IP windows
during exponential pulse decay. In case of occurrence of
significant noise (electric traction, electric distribution station) and
in case of bigger depth of survey it is recommended to increase the
potential level as well. On the other side the increase of potential
makes battery discharge faster (due to the bigger transmitted
power) and may increase the ground resistances of electrodes (dry
up caused by current).

 Stacking min, Stacking max – The minimum and maximum

number of pulses on one measured point.
The device automatically selects the number of pulses
according to the size of the measured potential and the standard
deviation of the measurements. The used number of pulses is never
under Stacking min and also never over Stacking max.
The minimum number of pulses is 3 (positive – negative –
positive) for resistivity measurement, and 4 (positive – negative –
positive – negative) for IP measurement. Higher number of pulses
allows the device to do smarter elimination of noise.

Recommended value of Stacking min / Stacking max is:

3 / 6 pro shallow resistivity measurement
4 / 8 for shallow IP measurement
3 / 12 for deep resistivity measurement
4 / 12 for deep IP measurement

42
ARES II
If the measured potential and the standard deviation are
good, the minimum number of pulses is used for the measurement.
If the measured potential is less than the optimum value or the
standard deviation is higher than the selected maximum value, the
number of pulses is increased.
Setting of this parameter has a major influence on the total
measuring time.

 St-dev max. – The maximum standard deviation value that is still

accepted.
If the standard deviation is higher than the preset
maximum after measuring with Stacking min pulses, the
measurement continues until the standard deviation is not proper or
the number of used pulses is equal to Stacking max.

 Output power. – Maximum output power

Select 300, 600 or 850 W according to requested
maximum output power of used supply (12 V car battery,
attachable battery pack, AC/DC converter).

2.3.9 Scheduling of the measurement (time monitoring)

Measurement can be done only once or automatically at preset
intervals. In case the power feeding is not present at a time of scheduled
measurement, or the device is not switched off (e.g. the previous
measurement is not finished yet), the scheduled measurement is skipped.

Scheduled start – is set if the measurement is started manually

only once, or if it is started automatically.

Time of the first measurement – hour : minute : second,

day / month / year

Measurement period – The interval between monitoring

measurements (day / hour : minute)

Measurements count – The number of measurement repetitions.

2.5 Connection device and accessories

2.5.1 Power supply
Connect the 12 V car battery (12 V, recommended capacity 60 Ah)
using the cable from accessories or the attachable battery pack or the AC /
DC converter or the AC adapter (only for office work) to the instrument’s
power supply connector. For more demanding multi-electrode cable
measurements it is recommended to use an external car battery or AC / DC
converter.
During measurement the device may be operated only from
standalone 12 V lead-acid battery or from 12 V electronic power supply
(converter) produced by GF Instruments. Other sources such as 12 V
car battery built in the car or 12 V generator are prohibited and may
lead to damage of the device. Do not charge the battery if connected to
the ARES II unit.
Be sure that the nominal voltage of the car battery is 12 V and its
capacity is sufficient. Connect the cable to ARES II first then connect the
red clamp to the plus pole and the black clamp to the minus pole.
The cable for car battery or AC / DC converter must be connected
to ARES II using both supply connectors. AC adapter or battery pack can be
connected to any of two supply connectors.

fig. 45 Car battery connection

48
ARES II
The attachable battery pack is useful for the SP, RP and VES
measurements, where the instrument’s easy portability is important. Thus an
undesirable random disconnecting of the supply during measurement can be
avoided. The attachable battery pack is also suitable for shorter 2D/3D
measurements.

fig. 46 Battery pack connection

When working in the office (downloading of the measured data to

the PC, preparation of the measurement etc.), the instrument can be supplied
using the AC adapter with exchangeable mains connector.

fig. 47 AC adapter

If you want to connect more ARES II units together (to increase

transmitted power) it is necessary to use the same type of their power
supply – either the electronic converters or the same type of car batteries
(12 V and the same capacity). Parallel connection of several car batteries
(by means of strong cables) for common supply of ARES II units is possible
and recommended. Never do any connection between poles of electronic
converters!
For VES and RP measurement you can supply two connected
ARES II units from one 12 V car battery with the capacity at least 60 Ah.

49
ARES II

2.5.2 GPS receiver

If an external GPS receiver is connected to the ARES II and SP,
RP, VES or GPS measurement is done (the moving measurement) the
current GPS coordinates are stored together with measured data. It allows
data to be easily connected with e.g. map basis. External GPS receiver can
be connected via RS232 port using GPS connection cable.

fig. 48 ARES II – GPS receiver connection

Connect GPS receiver to the device using GPS connection cable.

Set the GPS receiver to the mode for transmitting of the NMEA protocol,
speed 2400, 4800, 9600 or 19200 Bd without parity, 1 stop bit, and activate
GGA sentence transmitting (if needed). Turn the ARES II on and choose
Setting and then GPS comm. speed from the main menu.
GPS should be set as follows:

2.5.3 Single wire current and potential cables, infinite

electrodes
Single wire cables serves for connection of current electrodes C1,
C2 and potential electrodes P1, P2 (ev. P3...P11) to the device. It is
necessary while measuring without multi-electrode cable (RP, SP, VES)
and also while measuring with multi-electrode cable if infinite electrode is
used (pole-dipole, pole-pole).
Sockets for C1, C2, P1, P2 connections can be found on the panel
of device, or also on T-piece. For P3...P11 connection (multi-channel
measurement of VES, RP) it is necessary to connect also VES & Profiling
adapter. It is also possible to use VES adapter for connecting of more pairs
of potential electrodes during VES measurement.
Note: Infinite electrodes should be placed at least at the distance of
5 times of the maximum distance between used array electrodes. Only in
this case the influence of infinite electrode can be omitted (error less than
5 %). If it is not possible to achieve it, the position of „infinite“ electrode
can be included in calculation of the geometric factor so electrode’s
influence is eliminated.

adapter
Multi-electrode cable and also VES & Profiling adapter are to be
connected to the device via connector „Accessories“. Multiple channel
multi-electrode cable can be connected to the device directly or through T-
piece. T-piece can be connected to the end or to the beginning of the multi-
electrode cable or also between any two multi-electrode cable sections. The
end of cable with plug (male connector) has to be at the beginning of the
profile and the end of cable with socket (female connector) has to be at the
end of profile.

2.5.5 Adapter for passive multi-conductor cables II

The adapter for passive multi-conductor cables is to be connected
to the device via connector „Accessories“. The adapter has two connectors
for multi-conductor cables connection. There is also one switch close to
each connector, that must be switched to „1“ (multi-conductor cable
connected) or switched to „0“ (multi-conductor cable not connected). The
second switch I/II determines the number of cable sections connected
together. Other connector on the right side serves for next adapter
connection if we need to connect several adapters to increase the number of
the multi-electrode cables.

fig. 58 Connecting of adapter for multi-conductor cables

For single-channel adapter for multi-conductor cables connecting it

is necessary to use T-piece – there is a proper connector on the rear side of
the T-piece for that purpose. Single-channel and multiple-channel adapters
cannot be combined.

2.5.6 Electrodes
Stainless steel electrodes should be hammered into the ground deep
enough to make the electrical resistance between ground and electrode as
low as possible. To decrease the resistance it is possible to water soil around
electrodes or to use more electrodes, which are placed next to each other
(perpendicular to the profile in the distance from 25 to 50 cm) and
connected by short cable. Achieving low grounding resistance is important
for obtaining high quality data especially in IP measurement or in very deep
measurement (measuring depth over 100 meters).
Use O-rings for attaching of multi-electrode cable box.

fig. 59 Attaching of multi-electrode cable box

Non-polarizable electrodes should be filled by copper sulphate

solution, placed into a container with copper sulphate solution and their
contacts should be connected together by wire several hours before
measurement so their electrical potential will be balanced to the same level.

56
ARES II

2.5.7 Parallel connection of several ARES II units

Several ARES II units can be connected together to increase the
transmitted power.

Maximum power with Maximum power with single

multi-electrode cable conductor cables (VES, RP)
1x ARES II 1000 V / 5 A / 850 W 1000 V / 5 A / 850 W
2x ARES II 1000 V / 5 A / 1600 W 1000 V / 10 A / 1600 W
3x ARES II 1000 V / 5 A / 2350 W 1000 V / 15 A / 2350 W
4x ARES II 1000 V / 5 A / 3100 W 1000 V / 20 A / 3100 W
5x ARES II 1000 V / 5 A / 3850 W 1000 V / 25 A / 3850 W

Each ARES II unit must have its own power supply. All used
power supplies must be of the same type – either the electronic converters
or the car batteries (12 V and the same capacity). For VES and RP
measurement you can power two ARES II units from one car battery with
the capacity at least 60 Ah.
For maximum power the car batteries can be connected in parallel
by means of strong cables with clamps. Never connect electronic converters
together!
Connect each ARES II unit to T-piece and interconnect all T-
pieces. Then connect measuring accessories to the outside T-pieces (as
usual for single ARES II). If you need to connect electrodes for VES, RP or
infinite, connect cables to the plugs on the T-piece in the middle.

Parallel connection of ARES II units can be useful provided if

grounding resistance of current electrodes is below 1 000 .

switches the filter off.
 select + arrow up / down on the screen with measured layers
selects another layer to be displayed (it decreases / increases the

 5 on the screen No. 5 with measured layers changes the scale of the
horizontal axis (smaller part of the profile is displayed). To return
to the default setting (the whole profile is shown) hold the button 5
down.
 Yes or meas deletes the selected data point. You will be asked to
confirm the operation. A deleted data will be re-measured
immediately after measurement recovery. The deleted value is not
deleted absolutely, but it is only marked as “remeasured”, so there
are both old and new values in the data file (old value will not be
used for data export).
 No exits the data editing and resumes the measurement.

102
ARES II

What is shown on LAYER and VES graphs (screens No. 5 and 6):

 LAYER is a graph, in which there are drawn all data points with
the same distance between the first and the last electrode used for
data points measurement. Some measurement prescriptions define
more layers with the same distance of outer electrodes – those are
drawn into one graph so it is possible to compare measured values.
 VES is a graph, in which there are drawn all data points with the
same position of the middle between the first and the last electrode
used for their measurement.
 MC out of range means that the selected data point of the LAYER
or VES is out of current multi-electrode cable range (the data
cannot be re-measured without roll-along of the multi-electrode
cable).
 spac means the distance between the first and the last electrode
used for selected data point measurement.
 el.pos means the middle position of the electrodes used for selected
data point measurement.
 exclamation mark warns about the data point with zero apparent
resistivity (probably measured potential was reverse polarity then
expected so the apparent resistivity would be calculated negative).
 The data point drawn only with the outline with a blank center
signalizes the last measured data.

GPS communication. Then you can do the required changes and confirm
them by pressing of the Enter key. To finish the measurement you can leave
the parameters screen using the No key followed by confirmation of the
question Quit? by the Enter key.
The change of parameters influences measured results so it is not
recommended to make these changes in one measuring file.

Note:
 LAYER is a graph, in which there are drawn all data points with
the same distance between the first and the last electrode used for
data points measurement. Some measurement prescriptions define
more layers with the same distance of outer electrodes – those are
drawn into one graph so it is possible to compare measured values.
 VES is a graph, in which there are drawn all data points with the
same position of the middle between the first and the last electrode
used for their measurement.
 exclamation mark warns about the data point with zero apparent
resistivity (probably measured potential was reverse polarity then
expected so the apparent resistivity would be calculated negative).
 The data point drawn only with the outline with a blank center
signalizes the last measured data.

3.3.6 Activation of parallel connection of ARES II units

One ARES II unit serves as the master. Other ARES II units are
slave devices.
Connect all ARES II units using theirs T-pieces (see chapter 2.5.7).
Then switch slave devices on one by one and select “Settings”
from the main menu, then select “Power boosting” and confirm it. The next
screen will show order number of the slave device, its power feeding status
and its inside temperature. The device is ready for the measurement. Its
transmitter is blocked if the STOP button is pushed.

The master device is to be switched on as the last one. Run the

measurement on the master device using usual way. Slave devices will be
operated automatically from the master device.
Note: If you set 600 W or 300 W as the power limit of the master
device, the limit will be used also for all slave devices.
Parallel connection of ARES II units can be also used for time
monitoring. Electronic converters must be used as the power sources in this
case because slave devices are permanently switched on and have current
power consumption.

Always push red STOP button on all ARES II units

before touching measuring cables or electrodes.

5.3 Measured data export

5.3.1 Conversion of the .bin file to ASCII file

If you use the possibility to store data from the device directly to
the USB-Flash disc the data files are recorded in binary form. It is necessary
to convert these files to readable ASCII format.
Start the PC software. Select the directory in which the binary file
is stored. Open context menu (mouse right click) and select
Convert .bin to ASCII.

5.3.2 Export data into the interpretive program

The basic type of data file (ASCII) is easy readable and can be
opened by wide range of programs, such as Notepad or MS Excel.
However it is necessary to modify the format (make export) of the
data for direct processing in Res2DInv, Res3DInv, IPI2Win and Surfer.

Start the PC software. Select the directory in which the measured

files are stored. Select one or more files you want to export. If you select
multiple files they will be assembled and exported together. Open context
menu (mouse right click) and select Export and the required file type.
Some variant of the export window according to the selected file
type will appear (see pictures).

The names of the data files from which will be exported are shown
in the upper part of the window. Below is shown the name of the file that
will be created. File name as well as its location can be changed by clicking
on the button on the left.

Export button starts the data exporting.

Cancel button exits window.

136
ARES II

fig. 158 Export to IPI2Win window

In the Export IP window you can choose whether you want to

export apparent chargeability together with the apparent resistance, if it was
measured.
o None – No IP will be exported
o IP1..IP20 – Selected IP window will be exported
o IP redefine – Measured chargeability windows will be
recalculated into new IP window, which beginning and
ending time can be arbitrary set. Step curve is generated
from the measured IP windows, from which the new IP
window is calculated as the mean value within the set
period. For good results it is recommended to measure
discharging curve by a larger number of shorter IP
windows, ideal is to use preset IP windows sets

138
ARES II
Export into Res2DInv and Res3DInv software allows also setting
a simple filter to filter out unsuitable data:
o Method – select measuring electrode array to be exported.
o Minimal injected current – minimal transmitted current
o Minimal measured potential
o Resistivity range – the range of apparent resistivity to be
exported
o Maximal error – maximum allowable standard deviation
to be exported (separately for resistivity and
chargeability)
o IP range – the range of apparent chargeability to be
exported
o Density – only for BB a BS measurement, the parameter
sets the number of exported values between two
electrodes for softening results during followed data
processing. Higher number causes finer grid of the final
picture but the time of the inversion computation is
higher.
o Time monitoring – If you are exporting several identical
2D measurements (time monitoring) to Res2DInv,
checking this option causes to export them to a format
allowing simultaneous processing (see instructions for
Res2DInv, Time Lapse Inversion)

Export options for different types of measurement are:

VES - > IPI2Win

2D, USD - > Res2DInv, several profiles also Res3DInv
3D - > Res3DInv
BB, BS - > Res2DInv
GPS - > Res2DInv, Surfer
RP - > Res2DInv (only electrode array 10ch pole-dipole),
Res3DInv (only electrode array 10ch pole-dipole),
Surfer
SP - > Surfer

When exporting VES measurements each individual measured

VES is exported to a separate file. The individual files are numbered.

139
ARES II
When exporting GPS measurements to Res2DInv the distance from
the beginning of the profile (according to GPS coordinates) rounded to an
integer multiple of electrode configuration parameter a is used as distance
on the profile.

When exporting RP measurements to Res2DInv or Res3DInv the

positions of measuring electrodes are rounded to an integer multiple of
electrode configuration parameter a

When connecting several data files into one exported file,

following rules must be kept:

o Export to Res2DInv – It is possible to combine multiple

2D and USD measurements but the electrode distance in
all of the connected files must be equal or integer multiple
of each other. Positions of profile beginnings must fit to
the integer multiple of electrode distances. Export is done
with regard to the position and the direction of each
profile.
It is also possible to connect several BB and BS
measurements, which must be measured on one profile
(between 2 specific boreholes) and with the same
electrode distances.
Several RP measurements can be combined.
GPS measurements cannot be combined.

o Export to Res3DInv – It is possible to mutually combine

USD, 2D and 3D measurements (e.g. se. several parallel
2D profiles). The electrode distance in all of the
connected files must be equal or integer multiple of each
other. Positions of profile beginnings must fit to the
integer multiple of electrode distances. Export is done
with regard to the position and direction of each profile.
Several RP measurements can be combined.

6 Creating of user defined sets

This chapter describes the way of creating of the user measuring
set for VES, 2D, 3D and USD measurement. The measuring set can be
created in any text editor or spreadsheet, e.g. MS Excel. The measuring set
must have a name length maximum 20 letters, required extension and
required data structure with tab separator. Each line can be completed with
a text comment placed after ‘;’.
Each measuring set is divided into three parts – the prescription for
ten-channel measurement, for five-channel measurement and for single-
channel measurement. On the beginning of each part is a label:

“10 channels” – beginning of multi-channel prescription

“5 channels” – beginning of multi-channel prescription
“1 channel” – beginning of single-channel prescription

Multi-channel prescription defines, beside electrode positions, also

used receiver channels, which will be used for measurement where:

Channel code Where is connected (el. names)

0 P1-P2
1 P2-P3
2 P3-P4
3 P4-P5
4 P5-P6
5 P6-P7
6 P7-P8
7 P8-P9
8 P9-P10
9 P10-P11

Every single line in the prescription is identified with a code

according to the type of electrode array. Type of electrode array is used to
select the appropriate data format when exporting data.

6.1 Measuring set for VES - *.vss

Measuring prescription for VES defines individual electrode
arrangements, which will be measured on each measured sound (VES).

First line: full name of the method and its version

Second line: list of infinite electrodes (up to two electrodes of C1,
C2, P1 or P2) separated by comma. If there is no infinite
electrode, write „0“
Third line: 0
Fourth line: 0
Fifth and other lines – definition of individual measurements
(ten-channel, five-channel or single-channel)

Ten-channel part of the measurement prescription contains

distances of 13 electrodes (distances in meters of C1, C2, P1, ..., P11), array
code and numbers of used receivers (0..9, individual numbers without
spaces).
Five-channel part of the measurement prescription has the same
structure as ten-channel part, but it does not use electrodes P7 – P11 and
receivers 5 – 9.
Single-channel part of the measurement prescription contains
distances of 4 electrodes (distances in meters of C1, C2, P1, P2), array code
and number of used VES-adapter channel (potential pair).

Set the electrode as “inf” if the position is infinite.

Set the electrode as “-” if the electrode is not used.

6.2 Measuring set for 2D and 3D - *.mcs

Measuring prescription for 2D and 3D measurement defines
individual electrode arrangements, which will be measured along the whole
profile respectively on each direction of 3D measurement. So each line
defines one measured layer.
First line: full name of the method and its version
Second line: list of infinite electrodes (up to two electrodes of C1,
C2, P1 or P2) separated by comma. If there is no infinite
electrode, write „0“
Third line: 0
Fourth line: 0
Fifth and other lines – definition of individual measurements
(ten-channel, five-channel or single-channel)
Ten-channel part of the measurement prescription contains
distances of 13 electrodes (electrode number of C1, C2, P1, ..., P11), array
code and numbers of used receivers (0..9, individual numbers without
spaces).
Five-channel part of the prescription has the same structure as ten-
channel part, but it does not use electrodes P7 – P11 and receivers 5 – 9.
Single-channel part of the measurement prescription contains
distances of 4 electrodes (electrode number of C1, C2, P1, P2) and array
code.
Set the electrode as “inf” if the position is infinite.
Set the electrode as “-” if the electrode is not used.
Several electrode arrays can be combined in one file.

It is possible to use the specified electrode of multi-electrode cable

and simultaneously one or more adjacent electrodes as the current electrode
if the distance of current electrodes from all other electrodes is large. The
accuracy of the measurement is not significantly affected but the value of
the grounding resistance is much lower and the quality of the measurement
is higher. So the position of the current electrode can be completed with a
count of adjacent electrodes, which will be used together with the current
electrode (each side of multi-electrode cable).
Example:
3 - electrode No. 3 will be used
3*2 - electrodes No. 1,2,3,4,5 will be used

6.3 Measuring set for USD - *.uss

Measuring prescription for USD measurement defines individual
electrode arrays that will be measured. The structure of the prescription is
the same as the structure of *.mcs prescription, but the difference is the
*.uss defines individual points (*.mcs defines layers).

6.4 Measuring set for BB - *.bbs

Measuring prescription for BB measurement defines the arrays of
electrodes to be measured along the boreholes from the surface to the end of
the boreholes. The defined array of electrodes is thus measured for each
distance from the surface. It is also possible to determine whether, for one
position of electrodes in the first borehole, it is possible to measure only one
position of electrodes in the second borehole or whether it is possible to
shift positions of the electrodes in the second borehole.
While moving the positions of electrodes in the borehole it is often
achieved such formation of electrodes, which have a very high geometric
factor and which does not generate sufficient voltage (for a reliable
measurement) on potential electrodes. Measuring set allows you to define
the upper limit of the geometric factor, which determines whether the
electrode configuration will be measured or not.

First line: full name of the method and its version

Second line: list of infinite electrodes (up to two electrodes of C1,
C2, P1 or P2) separated by comma. If there is no infinite
electrode, write „0“
Third line: upper limit of geometric factor
Set “inf” If you do not want to limit geometric factor
Fourth line: How much may be the position of electrodes in the
second borehole shifted up and down against to position
of the electrodes in the second borehole. Set “0” or the
number of electrodes or “inf” for unlimited shift
Fifth and other lines – definition of individual measurements
(multi-channel or single-channel)

158
ARES II
Ten-channel part of the measurement prescription contains
distances of 13 electrodes (‘a’ for the first borehole or ‘b’ for the second
borehole + electrode number of C1, C2, P1, ..., P11), array code and
numbers of used receivers (0..9, individual numbers without spaces).
Five-channel part of the measurement prescription has the same
structure as ten-channel part, but it does not use electrodes P7 – P11 and
receivers 5 – 9.
Single-channel part of the measurement prescription contains
distances of 4 electrodes (‘a’ for the first borehole or ‘b’ for the second
borehole + electrode number of C1, C2, P1, P2) and array code.

Set the electrode as “inf” if the position is infinite.

Set the electrode as “-” if the electrode is not used.

Note: The position of the current electrode cannot be completed

with a count of adjacent electrodes, which will be used together with the
current electrode

6.5 Measuring set for BS - *.bss

Measuring prescription for BS is the same as the one for BB. For
each position of the electrodes in the borehole one or more available
positions on the surface can be measured. Defined array of electrodes is
shifted to a depth by the same number of electrodes like on the surface
profile.

The structure of the prescription is the same as the structure of

*.bbs prescription. The letter ‘a’ marks electrode position in the borehole,
the letter ‘b’ marks electrode position on the surface.

7.2 Active Multi-conductor Cables

These advanced cables serve for standard 2D/3D/4D multi-cable
surveys or for user defined surveys. This kind of cables with high resistance
against electromagnetic noise is especially convenient for measurement on
longer lines where its ability for easy rolling can be appreciated as well.

Standard version:

MCS5: Single-channel cable section with 8 electrode boxes,

5 m spacing.
ME II/5–5: five-channel cable section with 8 electrode outlets,
5 m spacing and section switch box.
ME II/10–5: ten-channel cable section with 12 electrode
outlets, 5 m spacing on the reel with section switch box.

fig. 181 MCS5 Active single-channel cable section with 8 electrode boxes and 5 m spacing

MCS5 is traditionally favorite active single-channel cable for all

kinds of imaging and advanced IP measurement. Maximum number of
boxes driven in one cable line is 200. This lightweight cable is to be
handled without strong mechanical shocks (like pulling the cable on the
ground or hammering electrodes connected to cable boxes).

163
ARES II
ME II/10-5 is active ten-channel cable on the reel serving for the
most exacting tasks like deep survey to several hundreds of meters and
advanced IP measurements. Its rugged design is typical with high resistance
against mechanical damage during transport and work.

Ten-channel and five-channel multi-electrode cable section ME II

combines advantages of both passive and active cables. ARES II control
unit can be installed at any section connection
.
Each cable unit consists of 3 parts (each part can be serviced
separately):

cable – robust “passive” cable without electronics

reel – for easy handling (optional accessory)
switch box – switching electronics (optionally with protective case)

7.3 Passive Multi-conductor Cables

These cables serve for 2D/3D/4D multi-cable surveys with shorter
electrode spacing or total line length. Their special versions can be used for
borehole surveys, for underwater surveys or for GPS-continual
measurement. The use of these cables requires the adapter for passive multi-
conductor cables (see next chapter).

7.4 Adapter for Passive Multi-Conductor

Cables
7.4.1 Single-channel adapter (48 Channel Switch Box)
This adapter serves for connection of multi-conductor cables with
48 (optionally up to 72) take-outs and allows using all ARES II functions
available for active multi-electrode cables.

fig. 187 Adapter for multi-conductor cables

The gray cable of the adapter as well as the connector on the right
side of the adapter serve for connection of 24 (optionally up to 36)
conductor cable.
The measuring multi-conductor cable is connected to the adapter
so that the lower numbers of the take-outs are situated on the left (1-24 for
the 48-channel adapter) the higher numbers of the take-outs are situated on
the right (25-48 for the 48-channel adapter).

The orange cable serves for connection of the ARES systems.

Adapter is to be connected to ARES II via the T-piece, which allows
connecting single-channel accessories to multi-channel device.

167
ARES II
The smaller connector on the right side of the adapter serves for
connection to another adapter. Several adapters can be connected together
in a cascade for increasing the number of electrodes up to 200. In this case
the ARES must be always connected to the first adapter on the profile. For
mutual connection of adapters it is necessary to order the prolongation cable
of a proper length (for maximum used distance of adapters according to
used spacing of electrodes on cables).

7.10 VES adapter

fig. 199 VES adapter

VES adapter (accessory for single-channel device) allows

connecting multiple pairs of potential electrodes to a single-channel device.
It can be used for VES measurement, when the measuring of the whole
depth range uses a small number of potential electrode positions. Individual
pairs of potential electrodes are to be connected to the VES adapter before
the measurement. The potential pair of electrodes defined by measuring
prescription is automatically used for measurement.
VES adapter allows speeding up the measurement and reducing
effort, because the measurement of individual VES points requires only to
operate the device and to move the potential electrodes.
VES adapter is to be connected to ARES II via the T-piece, which
allows connecting single-channel accessories to multi-channel device.

fig. 201 Radio set for remote control

The set allows the ARES II controlling at more than 10 km

distance. Necessary requirement is direct visibility between places of both
modules. Maximum reachable distance is influenced by conditions for
electromagnetic waves, especially by electromagnetic noise level.
The second RS232 connector allows connection of GPS receiver.
Antennas should be in vertical position for proper function, and
modules should be at least 1 m above the ground level.

Both radio modules contains built in Li-Ion accumulator. These

accumulators are charged if the module is connected to the PC or to the
device. Charged accumulator is indicated by green light, charging is
indicated by red light. The module can be used during charging as well as
when fully charged. Do not use the module if the red light does not switch
to green color within 4 hours of charging.

USB driver is the same for ARES II and Radio module.
