Presenting Direction: The class will be divided into
example/instances of three groups (Team Mahigugmaon, Team
the new lesson Matinguhaon, and Team Madasigon). I
will flash a set of codes in the screen.
Your task is to break the code to unveil
the hidden word. In deciphering the
hidden word, you are provided with
symbols which corresponds to each letter.
This will help you in breaking the code.
Each team will be given a whiteboard and
marker which will be used in writing your
answers. You are given 15 seconds to
answer. The first group who will raise their
whiteboard bearing the correct answer will
get the point. However, if the answer
given is wrong, the remaining groups will
be given a chance to present their
answers. The group who has more points
will be declared the winner. Are the
instructions clear?
Yes Ma’am.
C. Discussing new Earlier, you were acquainted with these

activity, etc.

What is the meaning of the word visceral? It means coming from a strong
emotion and not from logic or
reason

What is the meaning of vacillating? It means being uncertain of what

to do, or to change often between
two opinions. In other words,
unable to decide.

Lastly, what is the meaning of It is the quality of showing emotion

Also, it is sharing of emotion in a
way that is exaggerated or
embarrassing.

Class, are you all familiar with the words No Ma’am. Some words were not

the words that you decoded. What do you
call a statement of the meaning of a
word?

You are correct.

ACTIVITY 2: BASAHON TA! (READING THE

TEXT)

This time, we will read the essay

“Appasionato” by Barbara C. Gonzalez in
which the words that you have decoded
are taken. You will be given a hand-out.
Everyone is encouraged to silently read
and understand the text for 5 minutes for
you to be able to answer the questions
that will follow. Am I understood? Yes, Ma’am.
Appassionato
Barbara C. Gonzalez

Appassionato is the past participle of a Latin word “to impassion”. It is found in music sheets,
where the composer wants us to interpret a passage with passion. It should have been tattooed on our
palms as we were handed to the stork for delivery. Then we would have been saved from vacillating
between deadening dullness and paralyzing panic, from the trouble of learning on our that life without
passion is like salad without dressing- safe, healthy, not fattening, and unspeakably drab.
Passion comes from the Latin word “suffering,” hence the Passion of Christ. It implies suffering for
a cause deemed noble: Christ believed in His divine mission and carried it through to an extremely
uncomfortable death. We see that passion transcends the physical and, contrary to common perception,
is neither totally mindless nor totally blind. We determine with our reason how we want to live and
recognize the companion pieces of diffidence, when we opt for paths less travelled, corners, less
explored, then we live life with passion.
Analyzing passion is like defining love. We teeter dangerously on the brink of mawkishness.
Groping for imagery I find myself thinking of love as a cup of warm chocolate and passion as hot, strong,
almost thick coffee. Chocolate soothes, comforts, is sweet. Coffee unleashes energy, has a full-bloodies
flavor, a touch of bitterness unpleasant to others, but delicious to the drinker.
Love is softness; passion is smolder. Love might be contentment, but passion is adventure. It must
be free, untethered. It must explore, drive beyond the boundaries, break molds. Passion discovers,
unearths, examines, magnifies, revels in details. Love rolls up details into a coherent whole. Love is
passive; passion hyperactive. Where love is melancholic, passion is pain.
Love and passion are inseparable. Extreme desire for another person’s body without awe of that
person’s soul is lust. But when the desire for another body proceeds from a need to connect with that
body’s cherished uniqueness, its soul, then the desire becomes passion. Lust quickly disappears. Passion
is insatiable.
Passion is visceral. It stands outside traditional thinking. It ignores conventions like distance, time,
social acceptance. It dares into uncharted waters. It used to be primarily associated with romantic love.
Today, thanks to authors like Tom Peters and Nancy Austin (A Passion for Excellence), passion’s
boundaries have been extended to embrace world entrepreneurial endeavors, corporate success.
And why not? Work should be done with passion. I abandon myself to my career as I would to a
lover. I take professional and personal risks. When I win, I soar. Other times I hit the pavement with a
resounding thud. In between I do battle with indifference. I have been, for the most part, successful; not
because I am the best but because I do my best and that for me is a passionate, fulfilling life.
If passion is so good, then why do many fear it? because by its etymology (from the Latin word
“passus”, past participle of “pati” meaning to suffer) it brings pain. To be capable of passion one must be
open, vulnerable and brave enough to stare pain in the eye. It is safer, easier to be closed, unfeeling,
unhurt.
Also, passion picked up an unsavory reputation along the centuries. A murder committed by a
person who found his/her beloved in the arms of another was labelled “a crime of passion”; encouraging
many to shun “passion” when should have avoided “crime”. If instead the killing had been called “a crime
of murderous temper,” then perhaps more people could have surrendered to passion.
I believe that a life lived with passion shimmers, shines, rises above the ordinary. Allow me to
seduce you into passionate existence. To think, to sing, maybe even to sigh- appassionato.
Answering of Process Questions:

What is the essay about? The essay is about the etymology

of the word “Passion.”. It also talks
about the different words which
are associated with the meaning
of passion. Furthermore, the word
“Passion” is defined in different
ways.

In the text, passion is associated with the Based from the text, it says “Love
words love and lust. What insights have might be contentment, but
you gained out of this? passion is adventure. Love is
passive; passion hyperactive.
Lust quickly disappears. Passion
is insatiable.” I realized that love
and passion are inseparable. In
terms of relationship, lust and love
is not enough to sustain the bond.
There must be passion to
maintain the relationship.

In the text, passion is also associated to According to the author, work

work. What can you infer from this? should be done with passion. I
realized that being the best at
something is useless if you don’t
have passion in doing your work.
Failures are inevitable. But if one
has passion in his/her work,
success is achievable

Localization and Contextualization

What do you usually see in your locality or For me Ma’am, the celebration of
barangay that manifests extreme passion? Christmas. I think this manifest
passion because the people’s
commitment and effort to
celebrate the occasion shows how
devoted they are to this important
occasion. We celebrate
Christmas, not just for the sake of
leisure. We Filipinos religiously
celebrate it to give thanks for the
blessings we receive and most of
all, to honor the birth of Jesus.

As a young Agusanon, what are you (a student will give his/her

passionate about? answer)

Valuing

In the essay, there is a line which states, For me, everything you do is
““Life without passion is like salad without worthwhile and fulfilling if there
dressing- safe, healthy, not fattening, and is passion. Passion spices up
unspeakably drab.” What can you say everything. According to the
about this statement? author, a life lived with passion
shimmers, shines, rises above
the ordinary.

(a student will give his/her

Why is it important to have passion in
answer)
everything that you do?

D. Discussing new In the text, the word “passion” is defined in

concepts and different ways, right? Understanding the
practicing new skills meaning of the words can be a tricky
business, because language is dynamic.
#2
That is why defining is essential. This
time, we will learn about Definition as a
Mode of Paragraph Development.

Definition
- In its simplest form, a definition is “a statement of the meaning of a word or word group or a sign or
symbol”. In other words, a definition explains through clarification and further explanation what we
are trying to say with one or a few short words. Aristotle would say that the definition provides the
essence of the term. ( https://www.unifiedcompliance.com/education/what-is-a-definition/ )

Defining
- understanding the essence of a word, an idea, a concept, or an expression.
- The main purpose of defining is to give information to the reader as to what the author intends to
explain.
a. Denotation – the primary, explicit, or literal definition of a word.
b. Connotation – the secondary meaning of a word. It is not necessarily included in the dictionary;
rather it is how people understand a word based on their own personal or consensual experiences,
and not based on a dictionary.
To illustrate, let us have an example of a rose. According to the online version of the Oxford
Dictionary, a rose is…
“ The flower or a flowering stem any of numerous wild and cultivated plants of the genus Rosa; esp.
the large, many petalled flower of any of the numerous cultivated varieties of this plant, typically red,
white, or yellow, and often scented, but also occurring in a wide variety of other forms and colours”
(“Rose” www.oxforddictionaries.com, retrieved May 16, 2015)

This is the denotation of the word “rose”.

On the other hand, a bouquet of roses is usually what a person gives to his/her beloved. Beyond
being flower with a scientific name, a rose can also connote love and romance.

Besides denotation and connotation, there are techniques that one can use in defining. Before we dig
deeper to the topic, let us have another activity.

ACTIVITY 4: ATONG IPAKIGBAHIN OG

HISGUTAN (Jigsaw Activity)

This activity is called “Atong Ipakigbahin

og Hisgutan”. The groupings will be the
same. The group which you belong is
called the Mother Group. Each member of
the Mother Group should have an
assigned number (1, 2, 3) To determine
your number, look at the back of your
nametags. All students who are assigned
to number 1 will go to Station 1, while
those assigned to number 2 will go to
Station 2, and lastly those assigned to
number 3 will go to Station 3. The new
group that will be formed in each station
will be called the Expert Group. Each
station contains a chunk of information
that you have to discover and learn for
you to be able to share it when you return
to your Mother Group. I will give you 1
minute to study the information. When the
time is up, the Expert Groups will go back
to the Mother Group and share what you
have learned from the station assigned to
you for 5 minutes.

STATI
-
ON 1
1. Analysis
Is the process of breaking down a concept into its constituent parts. It also entails detailing in
which one, rather than zooming out and describing the concept as a whole, zooms in and focuses
on describing the aspects that make up a concept.

Example: The guitar is a musical instrument that produces sound primarily through strumming its
strings. Its sound is modified or manipulated through the interaction of the strings with the other
parts of the guitar, which are the headstock or simply the head, the tuners, the nut, the sound hole,
the body, and the bridge.

2. Comparison
-is associating the word or expression you are trying to define with something else not necessarily
synonymous with it. It is highly dependent on imagery which creates a vivid picture of a concept in
the reader’s mind.
-is usually used through analogy or figurative language like similes and metaphors.
-it is used to make abstract concepts more understandable by using comparison to appeal to the
human senses of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
Example:
“Groping for imagery I find myself thinking of… passion as hot, strong, almost thick coffee…
Coffee unleashes energy, has a full-bloodied flavour, a touch of bitterness unpleasant to others,
but delicious to the drinker.”

STATI
ON 2
3. Contrast
- Contrasting is understanding how at least two similar concepts are different from each other. In
the sample essay of Appassionato, Gonzalez mentions that “passion” and “love” are usually
collocated because they mean almost the same thing. To lessen the ambiguity between the two,
the author uses metaphors to contrast “passion” and “love”

Example: “Love is softness; passion is smoulder. Love might be contentment, but passion is
adventure. It must be free, untethered. It must explore, drive beyond the boundaries, and break
moulds. Passion discovers, unearths, examines, magnifies, and revels in details. Love rolls up
details into a coherent whole. Love is passive; passion hyperactive. Where love is melancholic,
passion is pain.

4. Etymology
-the history of a word. It explains the evolution of a word or how it has come to be.

Example: “Appassionato is the past participle of a Latin word that means “to impassion’… If
passion is so good, then why do many fear it? Because by etymology (from the Latin word
‘passus’ past participle ‘pati’ meaning suffer) it brings pain. To be capable of passion one must be
open, vulnerable, and brave enough to stare pain in the eye.”

STATI
ON 3
5. Extended Definition
-is a personal interpretation of an author to an abstract and multifaceted concept. It goes beyond
denotation and connotation. It gives the reader a new and fresh understanding of a concept as it
largely draws upon the author’s own perspective of the world.

Example: “I believe that a life lived with passion shimmers, shines, rises above the ordinary. Allow
me to seduce you into passionate existence. To think, to sing, maybe even to sigh-appassionato.”

6. Function
Another way of understanding what a word or concept means is to know its purpose. It answers
the question: What is it used for?

Example: Whether it may be an ancient sundial, a classy pocket watch, a Rolex or Swatch wrist
watch, an antique grandfather’s clock, or the mighty Big Ben of London, a clock, first and foremost,
is a mechanical device or technology whose primary purpose is to measure time.

E. Developing Mastery ACTIVITY 5: PANAGSANGKA SA MGA

Leads to Formative HUNAHUNA (CLASH OF MINDS)
Assessment 1
To test if you understood and learned the
information from the stations and the
chunk of information shared by your
members, we will have another activity.
This will be called “Panagsangka sa mga
Hunahuna”

I will flash questions in the screen which

you are going to answer. You will be given
a whiteboard and pen that you will use in
writing your answers. You have 5 seconds
to answer the questions and when the
time is up, you are going to raise your
answers. The group who will garner the
highest points will be declared as the
winner. Am I understood? Yes Ma’am.
