OBJECTIVES :

At the end of this practical session, students should be able to:

i. Construct the circuit of full-wave rectifier @ bridge rectifier

ii. Trace the input and output waveform of rectifier circuits using Oscilloscope
iii. Measure voltage and current in the circuits using multimeter

THEORY

Another type of rectifier circuit as shown in Figure 1, that called the Full wave @ Bridge
Rectifier. This type of single phase rectifier uses of four individual rectifying diodes connected in
a closed loop “bridge” configuration to produce the desired output. A full wave rectifier circuit
produces an output voltage or current which is purely DC. The average (DC) output voltage is
higher than for half wave and the output of the full wave rectifier has much less ripple than that
of the half wave rectifier producing a smoother output waveform.

Figure 1: Full wave bridge rectifier

The four diodes labelled D1 to D4 are arranged in “series pairs” with only two diodes conducting
current during each half cycle. During the positive half cycle of the supply, diodes D2 and D3
conduct in series while diodes D1 and D4 are reverse biased.

Figure 1.1: Measure value Vrms and Vavg

To measure Vrms value at the input voltage source, AC voltmeter is used and to measure V avg at
the load, DC voltmeter is used as shown in Figure 1.1. The relationship between Vp from
oscilloscope with Vrms and Vdc (Vavg) measured from multimeter is as shown below:-

The root-mean-square (rms) voltage is given as: Vp

Vrms = = 0.707 xVp

PROCEDURES:

1. Construct the circuit as shown in Figure 2 on breadboard.

Figure 2: Full wave bridge rectifier circuit

2. Connect transformer and oscilloscope to the circuit.

3. Determine the input waveform at point A - D and output waveform at point B - C using
oscilloscope.
4. Draw the input and output waveform and record peak voltage (Vp) obtained, in Table 1.
5. Calculate Vrms , Vavg and Iavg . Record the value in Table 1.
6. By using multimeter, measure the rms voltage at point A - D and record the reading in
Table 1. (The multimeter MUST be adjusted to AC Volt range).

7. Then, by using multimeter measure the average voltage at point B - C and record the
reading in Table 1. (The multimeter MUST be adjusted to DC Volt range).
8. Insert a multimeter in series with load to measure Iavg. Record the reading in Table 1.
(The multimeter MUST be adjusted to DC Ampere range).
