Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of The Study

Social media encompasses websites and apps for sharing content, allowing users to

engage by posting, responding to others, and sharing various media like pictures and

text. Well-known platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube act as

conduits, connecting people globally and facilitating the exchange of daily experiences

and emotions. However, despite the widespread use of these platforms the ways

individuals engage with social media can be notably diverse. Therefore, understanding

these aspects becomes crucial in addressing participant issues related to social media

use.

The study at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara in Medan, Indonesia,

examined the use of Facebook as a learning tool for EFL university students in

advanced writing classes. The findings showed that Facebook enhances students'

English communication confidence, participation in discussions, and language

proficiency, particularly in writing. The study suggests that Facebook can positively

influence learning habits and competence in higher education classrooms (Fithriani,

Daulay, Salmiah, & Fransiska, 2019).

A study conducted in Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur, Philippines, employed a

to investigate how social media consumption affects academic achievement, academic

socialization, enjoyment, and informative aspects. Simple random sampling was used to

select junior high school participants from the intended institution. The results showed

that students utilized social media for various activities, including group learning, peer

interaction, research, problem-solving, and curriculum comprehension. Crucially, all

participants expressed gratitude for the beneficial effects of social media on their

academic careers (Guillena & Dimacangun, 2023).

A study at Surigao State College of Technology (SSCT)-Mainit campus examined

the impact of social media on students' lives, particularly in agroforestry. Researchers

used questionnaires and interviews to track the significance of social media on students'

lives, aiming to determine if it helps or hinders their studies, leading to academic

fatigue and increased laziness (Masuhay, 2020).

In the study conducted at Butuan City School of Arts and Trades (BCSAT), with

the introduction of new technology, particularly in the form of mobile devices, social

media has become broadly available to everyone. Numerous scholars are investigating

the impact of social media on various spheres and facets of life.The purpose of the

study is to profile and quantify senior high school students' addiction to social media.It

was urgent for the researcher to pay attention on impact on adolescent students, as a

greater proportion of them suffer from addiction to social media. The educational

institution must make the required adjustments to assist parents, educators, and

students in learning about the beneficial uses of social media and assist learners in

making constructive use of this addiction (Mindajao,2021).

This research examines the various ways students at Butuan City School of Arts and

Trades engage with social media. It explores their online interactions, looks closely at

the kinds of questions they ask, and evaluates whether students are effectively learning

proper netiquette through their interactions with online peers.

While using social media, each of us has individual stories, both positive and

negative. Our aim at Butuan City School of Arts and Trades is to understand the diverse

experiences of students, offering solutions to their personal challenges related to social

media use.

Theoretical Framework

This study theoretical proposes that learners actively engage in constructing

knowledge through their experiences, reflecting on and integrating new ideas with

existing knowledge. The anchor of this theoretical assumption is the Constructivist

learning theory of Bruner (1966), which emphasizes students building on current

understanding by incorporating new information. Social media's role in students'

learning experiences is significant, impacting how they learn. Therefore, it's vital to

explore students' social media usage to regulate or enhance its positive influence.

Understanding how social media affects students can guide teachers in addressing it in

the classroom, aligning with the constructivist learning theory's focus on knowledge

construction through experiences. Examining students' social media use helps educators

develop strategies to support learning and address any negative impacts, informing

school policies on social media in education. In essence, comprehending students' social

media experiences is crucial for educators to devise effective teaching methods and

promote positive usage. Given in the context of the study, these are the students

experiences on using social media platforms.

Objective of the study

The aim of this study is to determine the experiences of students at Butuan City

School of Arts and Trades during their utilization of social media.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study focuses on the experiences of students at Butuan City School of Arts

and Trades regarding their use of social media. The Grade 10 students from the School

Year 2023-2024 were specifically chosen as participants due to their heightened access

to and familiarity with social media. Given our shared school environment, their

involvement is beneficial for us as researchers, ensuring accessibility and ease of

coordination.

The study centers on Grade 10 students who actively engage with social media

platforms, as their age and academic level commonly align with heightened social

media usage. This deliberate choice aims for a more precise exploration of how the

usage of social media influences the development of adolescents.

Significance of the Study

The study on determining students’ experiences with social media platforms at

Butuan City School of Arts and Trades (BCSAT) can offer advantages to different

stakeholders. Here are some potential beneficiaries categorized based on the potential

benefits:

Grade 10 Students at BCSAT. This study conducted to assist the Grade 10

students at BCSAT. By determining their experiences with social media. The outcomes

have the potential to provide solutions for their individual challenges associated with

the use of social media.

Teachers at Butuan City School of Arts and Trades (BCSAT). This study will

be beneficial to the teachers at BCSAT, enabling them to adapt and adjust to students'

social media usage behaviors.

Parents and Guardians. This study offers valuable information for parents

and guardians of Grade 10 students at BCSAT, improving their understanding of their

child's interactions and experiences on using social media platforms.

Future Researchers. The conducted studies not only offer valuable information

but also create opportunities for future researchers to refine and expand their studies

related to the experiences of students using social media platforms.

Definition of Term

In order to be familiarized with terms use in the study, the following terms are

operationally defined

Social media platforms. This refers to digital platforms and tools that Grade 10

students at BCSAT use to generate, share, and engage with content, establish

connections with others, and take part in virtual communities.

Phenomenological. This refers to a philosophical and research approach that focuses

on the subjective aspects of students' experiences at BCSAT on social media platforms.

Decorum. This refers to correct or proper behavior that shows respect and good

manners online that students in Grade 10 experience at Butuan City School of Arts and

Trades.

Netiquette. It refers to the rules of conduct for respectful and appropriate

communication on the internet of grade 10 students in Butuan City School of Arts and

Trades.

Descriptive-correlational methodology. Refers to describe the relationship

between variables in social media and Grade 10 students at Butuan City School of Arts

and Trades.

Encompasses- to include entirely or comprehensively.

EFL University- The English and Foreign Languages University known as EFLU is a

central university for English and foreign languages located in Hyderabad, India.

Agroforestry- the intentional integration of trees and shrubs into crop and animal

farming systems to create environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Adolescence- the phase of life between childhood and adulthood, from ages 10 to 19.

Integrating- bring together or incorporate into a whole.

Deliberate- to think about or discuss issues and decisions carefully.

Language proficiency- relates to a person's ability to produce and understand a

particular language.

Facet of life- it refers to different aspects or parts of life.
