An Open-Minded Communicator is someone that is willing to consider different

perspectives, opinions and ideas without being influenced. Someone who communicates with

others with a specific purpose using his arguments, is an active listener, who learns from

others and participates, giving his full version of their thoughts or ideas. I have been able to

read, recognize, rephrase and elaborate written work using technology. Throughout this essay,

we will be talking about how this skill is a strength of mine.

This skill, Open-Minded Communicator, is an area that is a strength of mine, but I

know I can grow more in it. I am an active listener who likes to hear others' perspectives

without dismissing them immediately. Participating in discussions is a place where I am able

to express my points of view clearly with very strong arguments to support them. As I said

earlier, I am still growing in the skill, and throughout the years I have noticed my growth.

Something that has always been a problem for me is public speaking. Since I was very little, I

was always negative about going in front of people, presenting in my class, and without

mentioning going on top of a stage. Going in front of people made me nervous and anxious

and made me forget things. It was always a complete disaster being up there. However, this

year in 11th grade, I started participating in DSLC (Doulos Student Leadership Council),

where I had the opportunity to discard that fear of public speaking and go do flag in the

morning, participate in big Doulos events, and even participate in Revolution; in other words,

I became confident in what I was going to do or say in every situation. At that moment, I

noticed I was growing and getting better at being an Open-Minded Communicator. When one

is able to master this skill, they can develop and nourish good relationships with others. Also,

express your thoughts and ideas with confidence.

Another way I’ve proven myself as an Open-Minded Communicator is through my

classes and working in business with my dad, I communicate ideas that are helpful for others
2

with the purpose of supporting their ideas. For example, in class, when we are planning a

fundraiser we talk about it together, the whole class gives their opinion, and in the end I

intervene to give way better ideas that would benefit all of us gaining more money for the

class. Working together with my dad gives me guidance since he is an expert in business in

the community. Listening to what he’s saying and looking at what he's doing, is the way I

learned how the business works and functions.

Through the year I’ve been perfecting my English pronunciation and I have seen the

growth on the way I talk to others in the language. Communicating in a different language

opens up a variety of opportunities, such as academically and in the workplace. For instance,

I have had the opportunity to go out with my father to projects in construction in which the

owners do not speak Spanish very well, so by having the ability to communicate in another

language I help my father do very important businesses. Also, as I said earlier, having this

ability opens up options academically in a variety of colleges that would accept the history of

my grades but more importantly because I know English and make contact fluently with the

language. Practicing English wasn’t an easy job for me because most of the people I hung out

with talk more Spanish than English. So when family members or friends come from the

United States, I use those moments as a chance to talk in my second language, get better at it

and master it.

In conclusion, this skill is a strength of mine. It helped me grow personally,

emotionally and professionally throughout the years. Even though this skill was very difficult

for me, it is definitely a skill that I would use and grow in the future. Me as an Open-Minded

Communicator is very important as I transition to the real world, or in other words, the

professional world. Having these skills, I won't have problems communicating with people

effectively in the future years. As well as, it benefits me to go through very difficult situations

where I need to express myself.
