About FAP-U422EV
IMPORTANT: Supported only from FortiWLC Release 8.4.0 or later and FortiGate with FortiOS Release 5.6.3 and later.
The FAP-U422EV is a dual radio, dual band 802.11ac Wave 2 access point and supports two 4x4 MIMO radios.
The device complies with the 802.3at PoE specifications and operates with a default TX power of +24dBm in
2.4GHz channels and +23dBm in 5.0GHz channels.
The FAP-U422 EV is compatible with FortiWLC enterprise wireless LAN controllers, integrated FortiGate
enterprise firewall LAN controllers, and FortiCloud controllers.
This device can be wall mounted or pole mounted. Use the supplied hardware components to complete
installing the unit.
3
Wall Mounting FAP-U422EV
Follow this procedure to attach the unit to a wall using the supplied wall mount bracket.
1. Using the wall-mount base as a template, mark the location of the mounting bolt holes on a flat wall
surface.
2. Drill the mounting holes in the marked locations and hammer the bolts into the openings.
3. Attach the wall-mount base securely to the back of the unit using the provided mounting screws.
4
4. Attach the device onto the wall by using the mounting bolts to secure the mounting base to the wall.
5
Pole Mounting FAP-U422EV
Follow this procedure to attach the unit to a pole vertically or horizontally using the supplied pole mount
bracket and straps.
1. Attach the wall-mount base securely to the back of the unit using the provided mounting screws.
2. Attach the pole-mount bracket securely to the wall-mount base using the provided mounting
screws.
6
3. Loop the pole straps through the slots on the bracket and then around the pole.
The pole mounting straps can be attached for either vertical or horizontal mounting.
4. Tighten the straps with the provided screws to attach the unit securely to the pole.
7
Antennas
The FortiAP unit provides dual concurrent radio signals. Use the 2.4GHz antennas to access 2.4GHz radio
(IEEE 802.11b/g/n) signals and the 5GHz antennas to access 5GHz radio (IEEE 802.11a/n/ac) signals. To use
both radio frequencies concurrently, use all eight WiFi antennas.

The weatherproof connects are provided for the LAN ports
Installing Weatherproof to ensure a watertight seal for connecting the Ethernet
cable to the device.
Connectors
1. Unscrew the coupling ring from the waterproof connector, remove the sealing gland, and thread the
RJ-45 plug through the connector components.
2. Insert the RJ-45 plug into the PoE port on the unit and install the weatherproof panel connector onto
the threaded coupling at the port.
14
3. Slide the sealing gland along the cable into panel connector.
4. Thread the coupling ring onto the panel connector and tighten it until the sealing gland is compressed,
making a watertight seal on the cable.
15
Follow these steps to connect the FortiAP to your network.
Connecting 1. Connect one end of the ethernet cable to the LAN1 PoE+ port
on the FortiAP. Connect the other end to the PoE port on the PoE
adapter.
2. Connect one end of the ethernet cable to the LAN port on the PoE
adapter. Connect the other end to a switch.
3. Connect one end of the console cable to the RJ-45 console port on
the FortiAP. Connect the other end to a management computer for
CLI access.
4. Plug the PoE adapter into an appropriate power outlet. The PWR
LED will light up.
NOTE:
The PIN060 POE Adapter is proprietary. Do not reverse the wires’ connection,
as this may damage the endpoint device.

The FortiAP boots up with the default FortiWLC AP image
and tries to discover the FortiWLC, FortiGate, and FortiCloud
Controller Discovery controllers simultaneously.
The FortiAP connects to the controller that is first
discovered.
• If FortiWLC controller is discovered, the unit continues booting up with the default FortiWLC
image.
• If the FortiGate or the FortiCloud controller is discovered, the unit reboots with the FortiAP
image.
For the FortiAP to discover the FortiCloud controller, you need to add the unique FortiCloud key
labelled on the device to the FortiCloud. See section FortiCloud Deployment.
For the FortiAP to complete the FortiGate discovery, you need to authorize the FortiAP on the
FortiGate. See section FortiGate Deployment.
To bring the FortiAP back to factory default setting, insert a pin into the reset point on the power
adapter and hold on for 10 seconds. Release the pin.
On the FortiAP image, run the reload default factory command to reset the FortiAP to factory default.
18
Follow these steps to complete the FortiCloud discovery.
1. Visit http://www.forticloud.com and sign in or create a
FortiCloud Deployment new account.
2. Click Inventory > Import AP Key and enter the unique FortiCloud key located on your FortiAP
device, then click Submit.
3. Deploy the FortiAP to an existing AP network, or create a new AP network, then click Submit.
19
4. Follow the prompts to associate the FortiAP device to an SSID.
5. Connect your FortiAP to an Internet connection. This can be a modem or another source of
Internet connectivity.
20
To complete the FortiGate controller discovery process, you
need to authorize the FortiAP on the FortGate.

21
The FortiAP unit is designed to require no configuration in most
networks. Zero configuration mode works if the unit is on the same
Zero layer-2 network and subnet as the FortiWLC, or if the unit is on the
same layer-3 network and subnet as the FortiGate or FortiCloud
Configuration controller.
22
To enable the FortiAP using Zero Configuration:
1. After connecting the FortiAP unit as described in the previous
Zero chapter, the unit goes through its boot procedure and requests
an IP address from the DHCP server.
Configuration 2. If the IP address is retrieved successfully, the FortiAP enters
discovery mode to locate a Controller.
The discovery modes for the FortWLC controller are:
• DHCP option 43
• DHCP option 138
• DNS
• Mesh PNP
• Static Controller IP address
The discovery modes for FortiGate controller are:
• DHCP option 138
• DNS
• Multicast
• Broadcast
• Static Controller IP address
23
The discovery mode for FortiCloud controller is:
• FortiCloud Protocol
Zero 3. Verify that the FortiAP has successfully connected to the
controller in the FortiWLC/FortiCloud/FortiGate WebUI.
Configuration
24
To enable the FortiAP with a static IP address:
1. Connect the FortiAP device to a seperate private switch or hub.
Manual IP 2. Access the AP console through the serial port.
Configuration 3. To configure FortiAP’s own IP address, type ip config net static
address <ip-address> netmask <netmask ip-address> gateway
& Controller <gateway ip-address>.
Discovery 4. [FortiWLC only] To discover the controller, type ip config l2l3
<l2only | l2preferred | l3only | l3preferred>.
5. To configure a designated wireless controller’s IP address, type ip
config controller name <controller ip-address>.
6. Save the configuration by typing ip config save.
7. Move the FortiAP to the intended deployment location and
connect the Ethernet cable.
