b) 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 2𝑥𝑥 + 𝐷𝐷 and 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) = 3𝑥𝑥 + 𝐷𝐷

4) Write the contrapositive of the following statement and if the statement is false, give a
counterexample.
a) Every polynomial has at least one zero.
b) If 𝑥𝑥 2 > 9 then 𝑥𝑥 > 3.
c) If 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 are real numbers and 𝑎𝑎 < 𝑏𝑏 then 𝑎𝑎2 < 𝑏𝑏 2.

5) Write the negation of each statement.


a) Some equations have solutions.
b) 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) and 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) are polynomials.
c) 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) or 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) is positive.
