1.0 INTRODUCTION:

Universal Masterbatch LLP, Ahmedabad. Proposes Soil Investigation work for construction
of Industrial PEB Structure at Survey No: 1066/002, Mouje Vasai, Tal: Daskroi,
Dist.: Ahmedabad. State: Gujarat.

The purpose of the investigations was to determine the sub soil stratification, geotechnical
information & safe bearing capacity, so as to provide information that will assist the structural
engineers in the design of the foundations and the relevant works.

The Job was carried out vide your PO No.: PO/2023-24/221 Dated 16.02.2024 under the
guidance and supervision of the soil personnel of M. K. Soil Testing Laboratory Private
Limited and client’s engineer.

2.0 FIELD WORK:

2.1 Borehole

Two boreholes having 150mm diameter were drilled using rotary drilling method upto 10.0m
depth below existing ground level (EGL).

The locations of the boreholes were decided with due consideration of client /consultant of
the project. The locations of the boreholes are shown in location plan in drawing part of
report.

2.1.1 Disturbed Samples

Disturbed representative samples were collected, logged, labelled and placed in polythene
bags.

2.1.2 Undisturbed Samples

Undisturbed soil samples are collected in 100 mm diameter thin walled samplers (Shelby
tube). The sampler used for the sampling had smooth surface and appropriate area ratio and
cutting edge angle thereby minimizing disturbance during sampling.

2.1.3 Method of Sampling

Sampler is coupled together with a sampler head to form a sampling assembly. The sampler
head provides a non-flexible connection between the sampling tube and the drill rods. Vent
holes are provided in the sampler head to allow escape of water/air from the top of sampler
tube during penetration. The sampling tubes are made free from dust and rust. Coating of oil
is applied on both sides to obtain the undisturbed samples in best possible manner.

1
Job No.: MK/53/02-24 M K Soil Testing Laboratory Private Limited, Ahmedabad-54

The sampler is then lowered inside the bore hole on a string of rods and driven to a pre-
determined level. On completion of driving the sampler is first rotated within the borehole to
shear the soil sample at bottom and then pulled out. Upon removal of the sampling tubes, the
length of sample in the tube is recorded. The disturbed material in the upper end of the tube,
if any, is completely removed before sealing.
The soil at the lower end of the tube is trimmed to a distance of about 10 to 20 mm. After
cleaning and inserting an impervious disc at each end, both ends are sealed. The empty
space in the sampler, if any, is filled with the moist soil, and the ends covered with tight
wrapper. The identification mark is then made on each sample.

2.2 Standard Penetration Test

The standard penetration tests are conducted in bore as per IS: 2131: 1981 (Reaffirmed
1987). The split spoon sampler resting on the bottom of bore hole is allowed to sink under its
own weight, then the split spoon sampler is seated 15cm with the blows of hammer falling
through 750mm. The driving assembly consists of a driving head and a 63.5 kg weight.

It is ensured that the energy of the falling weight is not reduced by friction between the drive
weight and the guides or between ropes. The rods to which the sampler is attached for
driving are straight, tightly coupled and straight in alignment. Thereafter the split spoon
sampler is further driven by 30cm. The number of blows required to drive each 15cm
penetration is recorded. The first 15cm of drive considered as seating drive. The total blows
required for the second and third 15cm penetration is termed as a penetration resistance - N
value.

2.3 Electrical Resistivity Test (ERT)

Aim & Scope of Investigation:

The main objectives of the Resistivity Survey and Investigation are as under.
• To know the resistance of the sub-surface layers.
• To study the sub-surface resistivity vertically at various depths for designing of
electrical earthing system.

Resistivity Survey:
The resistivity survey is conducted as per given Location as enclosed:
Total 2 No. of Electrical Resistivity tests is conducted at pre mark locations in the plot area. In
the geophysical resistivity survey Wenner configuration method is used. The main aim of the
present survey is to know engineering properties of the formation and its resistivity at
different depth.

2
Job No.: MK/53/02-24 M K Soil Testing Laboratory Private Limited, Ahmedabad-54

In the Wenner four pin method, four electrodes are driven into the earth along a straight line
at equal interval. Current ‘I’ is passed through the two outer electrodes and the voltage
difference ‘V’ is observed between the two inner electrodes. The current ‘I’ flowing into the
earth produces an electric proportional to its density and to the resistivity of the soil. The
voltage ‘V’ measured between the inner electrodes is therefore, proportional to the field
condition. Resistivity thus will be proportional to the ratio of the voltage to the current.

Pa = 2  a V Ohm.m
I

Where Pa = Apparent Resistivity of the formation / Soil ( Ohm.m.)

a = Distance between two electrodes (m.)
V = Voltage ( milli volt.)
I = Current ( milli Ampere.), ( V / I = Measured Resistance in
Ohm.)

RESISTIVITY SET UP
ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT FOR RESISTIVITY SURVEY.

At the selected point in the chosen direction i.e. North – South and East – West four
electrodes are driven into the earth up to required depth along a straight line at equal
intervals. The D.C. resistivity meter is placed in the steady and level base. The current and
potential electrodes are connected to the instrument terminals. By passing current from the
battery box, readings are taken and tabulated in the table.

the given tables No.: 2.

3.0 LABORATORY TEST:

The laboratory tests on soil samples were started immediately after the receipt of the same in
the laboratory. All laboratory tests are carried out as per the respective Indian Standards. The
results of the laboratory tests were performed on various samples are presented in the form
of Table No. 4 and drawing part end of report.

5.0 GROUND WATER TABLE:

The Ground water table was encountered at 3.8m to 3.95m depth below EGL in the
boreholes at the time of investigation. (February – 2024)

6.0 TYPICAL CALCULATIONS FOR SAFE BEARING CAPACITY:

6.1 Assumption / Data:

i. Type of foundation considered : Square foundation.

ii. Total Permissible settlement : 50mm for footing

(Ref.: IS: 1904-1986)

iii. Depth of foundation below EGL : 2.0m

iv. Size of foundation : 2.00m X 2.00m

v. Water Table : At 3.8m depth (considered at foundation lvl)

6.1.2 Bearing Pressure Based on C &  Values: - (Shear Criterion)

For computing bearing capacity at 2.0m depth below EGL following parameters are adopted.
Cu = 0.25 Kg/cm2
 = 17.0•
The ultimate net bearing capacity for square foundation for mixed shear failure is given by
equation
Qnd = 2/3 C Nc Sc dc ic + q (Nq-1) sq dq iq + 0.5 B ɣ Nr Sr dr ir Rw’
Where,
Qnd = Net ultimate bearing capacity of foundation.
C = Cohesion = 0.25 Kg/cm2
D = Effective Depth of foundation = 200 cm
B = Width of foundation = 200 cm
Sc, Sq, Sr are shape factor for square footing.
Sc = 1.30, Sq = 1.20, Sr = 0.8
dc, dq, dr, are depth factors,
dc = 1.0, dq = 1.0, dr = 1.0
(Assuming that overburden soil is not compacted properly)
ic, iq, ir are inclination factors.
ic = iq = ir = 1.0 (Since load is vertical)
Adopting Nc, Nq, Nr factors as per IS: 6403 as below:
For  = 17.0• and mixed shear failure
Nc = 10.16, Nq = 3.52, Nr = 2.28
5
Job No.: MK/53/02-24 M K Soil Testing Laboratory Private Limited, Ahmedabad-54

Qnd = [2/3 x 0.25 x 10.16 x 1.3 x 1.0 x 1.0] +

[0.314 x (3.52 - 1) x 1.2 x 1.0 x 1.0] +
[0.5 x 200 x 0.00157 x 2.28 x 0.8 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 0.5]
= 3.29 kg/cm2

Where,
Qnd is net ultimate bearing capacity,
Adopting factor of safety as 2.5
Qnd 3.29
qs = ------------ = ------------
FS 2.5

= 1.317 kg/cm2
= 13.17 t/m2

6.1.3 Safe Bearing Pressure Based on Settlement Criterion:

(From Consolidation Settlement)

Pressure bulb shall be taken as,

1.5 x B = 1.5 x 2.0 = 3.0m below foundation level,
Assuming pressure distribution as 2(vertical) : 1(Horizontal)
Now,
Following parameters are adopted,
Compression index (Cc) at mid depth below GL = 0.088
Initial void ratio (eo) at mid depth below GL = 0.63
Po = Initial pressure at mid depth below GL = 5.50 t/m2
δp = Increase in pressure at middle cohesive soil layer.

P x 2.00 x 2.00
δp = ---------------------- = 0.33P
3.5 x 3.5

Considering P = 21 t/m2

Settlement (S) in cm at mid depth for compressible stratum is given in equation.

Cc H Po + dp
Sc = ----------- log10 (-------------)
1 + eo Po

0.088 x 300 5.5 + 0.33 x 21

Sc = --------------------- log10 (---------------------------)
1 + 0.63 5.5

Sc = 5.73 cm

Immediate Settlement,

6
Job No.: MK/53/02-24 M K Soil Testing Laboratory Private Limited, Ahmedabad-54

q x B x (1- 2) x I
Si = -----------------------------
Es
Where,

 = 0.4 (For Clay)

I = 0.95 (As per IS: 8009 (Part I)

Es = 500 x Cu

= 125 kg/cm2

2.1 x 200 x (1 - 0.42) x 0.95

Si = ---------------------------------------
125
= 2.68 cm

Total settlement = Sc + Si

= 8.41 cm

For L/B = 1.0 and LB/D = 1.0, depth factor Df = 0.725 and rigidity factor = 0.80
Appling depth factor and rigidity factor,
Corrected settlement = 8.41 x 0.8 x 0.725

= 4.88 cm

= 48.8 mm

Hence bearing pressure = 21 t/m2 for permissible settlement of 50mm.

Hence recommended net SBC is 13 t/m2.

9.0 CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS:

(9.1) The site for construction of Industrial PEB Building at Vasai is observed to be consist
of filled up soil followed by silty sandy clay having low plasticity underlain by non
plastic sandy silt. This layer is followed by silty clay or clayey sand having medium
plasticity upto 10.0m depth below EGL.

(9.2) The Ground water table was encountered at 3.8m to 3.95m depth below EGL in the
boreholes at the time of investigation. (February – 2024)

(9.3) The net safe bearing capacity of different sizes of foundation at 2.0m to 3.0m depth
below EGL is recommended in para 8 with permissible settlement of 50mm in natural
condition of soil.

(9.4) The soil is having low swelling potential, so it can be used as back or plinth filling
purpose with proper compaction.

(9.5) Alternatively pile foundation is suggested to support structure. The load carrying
capacity of piles is calculated and reported vide para 8 of report. This capacity is
subjected to verification by pile load test as per IS: 2911 (Part–IV).

(9.6) The results of the laboratory tests are incorporated in the form of table at the later part
of the report.
