Electric Current and its Effects

2. The bulb in the circuit does not glow. Can you identify the problem? Make

necessary changes in the circuit to make the bulb glow.

[2 marks]

In the given circuit, the positive terminal of one cell is connected to the
positive terminal of the other cell. [1 mark]

To make the bulb glow, we must reverse the polarity of one of the cells.

3.
Which of the following arrangements of cells correctly shows the connections

to form a battery?

Electric Current and its Effects

In order to build a battery from cells, all the cells must be connected in such
a way that opposite terminals are connected with each other, and so on.

So option D is Correct.

4. Can we use the same fuse in a geyser and a television set? Explain.

[2 marks]

No, we cannot use the same fuse in a geyser and a television set. [1 mark]

This is because a geyser and a television set require different amount of

current to run. A geyser requires a higher rating fuse as compared to a
television set. [1 mark]

5. Statement 1: Overloading and short-circuit cause excessive current in the

circuit.

Statement 2: When a fuse is used in an electric circuit, there is a minimum

limit on the current which can safely flow in it.

[1 mark]

 A.
Only statement 1 is correct.

 B.
Only statement 2 is correct.

 C.
Both statements are correct.

 D.
Both statements are incorrect.

If a large current passes through a wire, the wire may become so hot that it
may even melt and break.
One reason for excessive currents in electrical circuits is the
connection of many devices to a single socket. As depicted in the first
image, a table lamp, an electric kettle, a computer, and other
appliances are connected to a single power strip. This may cause an
overload in the circuit.
Another reason for excessive current can be the direct touching of
wires. This may happen if the insulation on the wires has come off due
to wear and tear. This may cause a short circuit. As shown in the
second image, two wires which are connected to an incandescent bulb
are touching each other. And due to the bare insulation of wires, a
short circuit is getting caused.

6. Will the compass needle show deflection when the switch in the circuit shown

in the figure is closed?

[1 mark]

 A.
Yes

 B.
No

Solution:
Option (B) No
[1 mark]

The compass needle will not show any deflection because there is no power
source in the circuit. Therefore, there will be no flow of electric current
through the circuit and thus there will be no magnetic effect.

7. Do you think an electromagnet can be used for separating plastic bags from a

garbage heap? Explain.

[2 marks]

No, an electromagnet cannot be used for separating plastic bags from a

garbage heap. [1 mark]

This is because an electromagnet would only attract magnetic materials

(materials which are attracted by a magnet), and plastic bags are non-
magnetic materials. [1 mark]

8. Boojho made an electromagnet by winding 50 turns of wire over an iron

screw. Paheli also made an electromagnet by winding 100 turns over a similar

iron screw. Which electromagnet will attract more pins? Give reason.

[2 marks]

Solution:
The strength of an electromagnet can be increased by increasing the
number of turns in the coil.
[1 mark]

Since Paheli is using an electromagnet with larger number of turns as

compared to Boojho, her electromagnet will attract more iron pins.
