Socorro Ramos, also known as Nanay Coring, is a prominent Filipino businesswoman and the co-founder
of National Book Store, the largest retail bookstore chain in the Philippines. She was born on September
23, 1923.

Socorro Ramos and her husband, Jose Ramos, established a small stall in Escolta in 1940, where they
sold supplies. Over the years, the business grew into a chain of bookstores with branches throughout the
country. In the 1990s, the chain had about 50 branches, and it has since expanded to have 145 branches.
National Book Store currently has over 3,000 employees and fully operational subsidiaries.

Socorro Ramos is known for her hands-on approach to running the business and even designed the
company's logo herself. At the age of 98, she is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the
Philippines and is estimated to have a net worth of USD 3.1 billion, making her one of the country's
richest people.

Socorro Ramos worked as a salesperson in a bookstore before starting her career in publishing and retail.
At the age of 19, she and her spouse opened the National Book Store in Escolta with PHP 200 capital,
offering children books and school materials. At the time, the Japanese censored publications, and
books, including her rapidly growing company. She and her spouse added to their income by selling
other goods like soaps and candles. Additionally, their store burned destroyed in 1945 during the Battle
of Manila. Rebuilding their store at a new location on Rizal Avenue, they had to start over with the books
they had salvaged. Regretfully, in 1948 another typhoon destroyed their establishment.

Despite these challenges, Socorro and Jose persisted. Their rebuilt store now has a mezzanine, and
they've expanded their inventory to include toys, presents, periodicals, and greeting cards. They
expanded their workforce and established new branches in other areas. By including their three children,
Alfredo, Benjamin, and Cecilia, they turned the gathering into a family gathering. By the 1990s, they had
about 50 branches across the country. By 2020, they will have 145 branches and over 3,000 employees.
