successfully.
PART A
Micro-project Proposal
Type of belt drive and chain drive

1.0 Brief Introduction :-

 Renewable energy is energy derived from natural sources that
are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed.

2.0 Aim Of Micro-project :-

 To study Type of belt drive and chain drive

3.0 Course Outcomes Addressed :-

 Practice Good Housekeeping .
PART B

Type of belt drive and chain drive

1.0Brief Inroduction :-

2.0Aim of MicroProject :-
 To study of belt drive and chain drive

3.0Course Outcome Addresed :-

4.0Actual procedure followed:-

 According to Arrangement:

A) Open belt drive

B) Cross belt drive
C) Compound belt drive
D) Open belt with idler pulley drive
E) Stepped or cone pulley drive

 According to type of belt used:

A) Flat belt drive
B) V-belt drive

A) Open Belt Drive

 Open belt drive is used, when both driving and driven shafts are arranged in
parallel and rotating in some direction
 In this case, the driver pulls the belt from one side (ie. lower side QR) and
delivers it to the other side (ie. upper side LM).
 Thus, the tension in the lower side belt will be more than tension in the upper
side belt.
B) Crossed or Twist belt drive
 Crossed or Twist belt drive is used,
when both driving and driven
shafts are arranged in parallel,
but rotating in the opposite
direction.
 This arrangement provides increased frictional contact between belt and pulley.
 However, it is subjected to excessive wear at a point, where the belt crosses and
two belt sides rub against each other. In order to avoid this difficulty, shafts
should be placed at a distance at least equal to 20 times width of belt. (i.e. 20 b,
where b is the width of belt) and the speed of belt should be less than 1.5 m/s.

C) Compound
Belt drive :
 Compound
belt drive is used, when power is transmitted from one shaft to another shaft
through a number of intermediate pulleys.
 Refer Fig. 4.4, where pulleys (1) and (3) are drivers and pulleys (2) and (4) are
driven pulleys. Here, pulley (1) is called as first driver and pulley (4) is called as
last driven, whereas, pulleys (2) and (3) are called as intermediate Theory of
Machines pulleys.

D) Open Belt with Idler pulley Drive

 It consists of an open belt drive with an idler pulley.
 The idler pulley causes increase in frictional contact between the belt and
smaller pulley.
 Also, the position of idler pulley can be changed to increase the belt tension.

E) Stepped or cone pulley

Drive
 It consists of various steps
on the driving and driven
pulleys to accommodate
shifting of belt, which results in change in speed of driven shaft (either increase
or decrease).

 Chain drive

1) In case of belt drive and rope drive, while

transmitting motion, slipping may
occur. Therefore, steel chains are used for
motion and hence, power transmission
instead of belt and ropes to avoid slipping.

2) Steel chains are made of number of rigid

links, which are hinged together by pin
joints, to provide the necessary flexibility for wrapping or wounding it around
the driving and driven wheel.

3) Driving and driven wheels have 'projecting teeth of special profile' and 'fit into
the corresponding recesses in the chain links' as shown in Fig. 4.16.
4) Therefore, it becomes obvious that, wheels and chain are constrained to move
together without slipping.

5) Chain drive is called as positive drive, because slip is absent. In chain drive, we
get a constant velocity ratio to some extent.

6) Toothed wheels are known as sprocket wheels or simply sprockets.

7) Chain drives are mostly used to transmit motion and power from one shaft to
another, for short centre to centre distance.

A) Hoisting (crane) Chains:

 These chains are used for hoisting

purposes and operate at maximum
velocity.
 The links of these chains may be
of oval shape or square shape.
 Manufacturing cost of chains with
square links [Fig. 4.17 (I) (b)] is
more than the oval shape links [Fig.
4.17 (1) (a)]. However, chains with
oval shape are preferred in many applications due to smooth and less noisy
operation.

B) Conveyor chains:

 These chains are used for elevating and conveying the materials continuously at
a moderate speed.
 However, they offer smooth running qualities, because they are made up of cast
iron.
 Conveyor chains include, (a) Detachable or Hook joint type and (b) Closed joint
type.

C) Power transmitting chain

 These chains are used, when the centre to centre distance between two shafts
is short. .
 Power transmitting chains have provision for efficient lubrication. Therefore,
their life is more than hoisting chains and conveyor chains.
 These types of chains include block or Bush chain, Silent chain and Bush Roller
chain. (a) Block or Bush chain produces noise, when approaching or leaving the
sprocket due to rubbing between the contact surfaces.
