Objective

This Document defines the requirement & process for implementation of Equipment life cycle
management (ELCM).

This procedure establishes BDPL approach and practices in the pre-definition, Definition,
implementation, operations & maintenance, equipment and termination of aged equipment.

This procedure provides guidelines to users of equipment to achieve below:

1. Building a life cycle periodicity for all equipment’s.

2. Fixing the life cycle period for all old & new equipment’s.
3. Procedure to be followed to uplift / upgrade equipment to meets its life cycle period.
4. Management of equipment’s to meet its life cycle & beyond.

Overview

Equipment life cycle management (ELCM) describes how the equipment is to be managed
throughout its life period from the inception till retirement.

Scope

This document is applicable to all equipment’s which are in service & equipment’s which are to
be installed & commissioned.

This process includes study of equipment, history of maintenance & surroundings around which
play a major role In the overall equipment efficiency.

Policies

 All equipment’s undertaken for life study should be in accordance with the original
Manufacturer recommendation.
 Life periodicity of equipment should be based on the subject matter expert feedback
 Life cycle study analysis should be conducted at the installed area to understand its
operating conditions.
 All equipment’s are to be analysed basis the installed guidelines & design brief study.
 Ensure the equipment is been operated, maintained according to the recommendations
of the equipment supplier to ensure that the technical lifetime specified by the
manufacturer is not reduced
 The equipment has not design fault or defect & did not have any industrial accident due
to which the equipment cannot operate at rated performance levels.

Procedure

Life Cycle Audit

 A committee of member comprising of Subject Matter Experts (SME) from

different departments from (Facilities, Quality control, Engineering heads &
External consultants) are chosen to implement life cycle study of equipment’s.
 A detailed list not limiting to only equipment & inclusive of all auxillary systems
are prepared & broken up to last detail of the equipment is prepared.
 Use Manufacturer information on the technical lifetime of equipement &
compare to the date of first commissioning
 Obtain a expert valuation.
 List of equipment’s with details of below is made available to fix the life cycle
period basis the OEM life period & actual condition on site
o Equipment data
o Installed date
o Installation conducted by
o History of the equipment
o Major spares replaced in the said equipment
o

3
 Life cycle of each equipment is fixed basis OEM recommendation / Warranty &
basis the experience of the SME’s
 A survey is done by the Life cycle committee member to check on the existing
physical & operating condition.
 A detailed report is prepared to separate equipment’s basis their performance &
installed conditions.
 Report shall bifurcate equipment’s as per the recommendations in 3 categories
o Obsolete
o Classic
o Limited

Life Cycle Management

 Equipment categorised in the life cycle audit report are undertaken for
improvement / retirement as their life cycle & site conditions.
 Equipment that come under Obsolete are rechecked with OEM / SME to retrieve
its performance if possible before being declared as OBSOLETE & unfit.
 Equipment under Limited & Classic category is undertaken for enhancement &
prolonging its life cycle with inclusion of revised technology / enhancement of
operating conditions.
 Repair / resurrection process is implemented post detailed inspection involving
Reliability Check Monitoring ( RCM) / Condition monitoring (CM).
 Reports are prepared post RCM / CM & budgets are prepared for approvals.
 All resurrection process should be signed off by SME’s before implementation
 A schedule is prepared basis the life cycle fixed & periodic inspection / Audits to
be conducted as per schedule by in-house team & SME’s.
 Scheduled audits reports are again scrutinised periodically to understand the
operating conditions of the equipment & conclude on the life cycle of the said
equipment.

Life Cycle Management Budget

 A separate budget is prepared basis on the RCM / CM report to bring the

equipment categorised as Limited to Classic stage.
 All correction process should be accordance with the equipment performance
requirement & care to be taken not to over spend beyond required limits.
