BASIC CONCEPT OF REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

uniform load

reinforcing bars

tension cracks

• The tensile strength of concrete = 10% of its compressive strength

• Concrete cracks when its tensile strength is exceeded
• Reinforcing bars are designed to resist tensile stresses in the concrete and control cracking
• Reinforcing bars have the same coefficient of expansion and contraction as concrete

Anchor vs Rebar Webinar l June 2017

REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN ASSUMES BARS YIELD

ec = 0.003 0.85f’c
a/2
a a C = 0.85f’c a b

As
T = As fy
ey = fy/Es

• Concrete member is proportioned to provide a design strength - fMn

• Design strength is checked against the factored load - fMn > Mu
• Bars are designed to yield - T = (Asfy)

6/14/2017

REINFORCING BARS DESIGNED FOR DEVELOPMENT

• Embed deep enough to yield the bar to preclude splitting

• Transfer force from one bar to another using tension lap splice

• Provides design continuity for continuous beams or slabs (new to existing)
