Course, Year & Section: BSCE – 4C

Problem 1 to 7: Solution:

Two angles are bolted to a 19 mm plate with

20 mm bolts. All components are grade 36
steel. Assuming that bolt strength and block
shear do not govern. Using NSCP 2015.

a. Determine the standard hole diameter

b. Calculate the gross area of two angles

c. Calculate the net area of two angles

d. Calculate the shear lag factor

e. Calculate the effective net area

f. Calculate the design tensile yield

strength

g. Calculate the design tensile rupture

strength
Problem 8 to 9: mega page 194

Using the same data from the previous problem.

Calculate the design tensile yield strength and
the design tensile rupture strength. Use NSCP
2015 ASD.

Solution:
Problem 10 to 15: gille 372

The welded bracket shown in the figure below

will be designed to support a service load of
30 kN and a service live load of 55 kN using
E70 electrode. Use NSCP 2015 ASD.

a. Calculate the connection eccentricity

b. Calculate the torsional constant

c. Calculate the eccentricity

d. Calculate the torque

e. Calculate the total load at A

f. Calculate the required size of the fillet weld

Solution:
Problem 16 to 18: gille 360

A 6 millimeter fillet weld formed by the shielded

metal arc process (SMAW) and E70 electrodes
with a minimum tensile strength F EXX =485 MPa .
Assume that the load is to be applied parallel to
the weld length. Compute the nominal strength
per weld in mm and the available strength of the
weld for a length of a 500 mm.

Solution:
Problem 19 to 20: gille 362

A 6-mm-thick plate is used as a tension member

is connected to a 10 mm gusset plate as shown
below. The welds are 6 mm fillet made with E70
electrodes with a minimum tensile strength equal
485 MPa and the connected parts are A36 steel.
Assume that the tensile strength of the connected
parts is adequate. Evaluate the available strength
of the welded connection.

Solution:
Problem 21 to 23: steel na ine ha mega 254

A 6 millimeter fillet weld formed by the shielded

metal arc process (SMAW) and E70 electrodes
with a minimum tensile strength F EXX =485 MPa .
Assume that the load is to be applied parallel to
the weld length. Using NSCP 2015 LRFD.

Solution:

a. Determine the weld ultimate shearing stress

b. Determine the nominal capacity

c. Determine the ultimate allowable capacity

Problem 24 to 25:
