Topic : The Effects of War Between Israel and Palestine

The war between Israel and Palestine is an ongoing conflict involving fighting, violence, and
political disputes between the state of Israel and the Palestinian people, as well as groups within
both. It involves military fighting, terrorist attacks, Israeli settlement building in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip, and repeated peace efforts and negotiations. This conflict has complex historical,
political, religious and cultural roots.

As the conflict enters its second month, the UN Development Programme and the UN
Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) have released a report indicating
a concerning trend: poverty has surged by 20 percent, and gross domestic product (GDP) has
declined by 4.2 percent. If the war persists for another month, the projected impact on Palestinian
GDP is severe, with an anticipated drop of $1.7 billion, or 8.4 percent. Furthermore, the
economy is expected to contract by 12 percent, resulting in losses of $2.5 billion and pushing
more than 660,000 individuals into poverty should the conflict extend into a third month.

UN Development Programme Assistant Secretary-General Abdallah al-Dardari underscored

the significance of these projections, highlighting that a 12 percent GDP loss by year's end would
be "massive and unprecedented." Comparisons to other conflicts, such as Syria and Ukraine,
offer context, with the Palestinian territories facing challenges reminiscent of those experienced
elsewhere. At the outset of 2023, the Palestinian territories were categorized as a lower
middle-income economy, with Gaza already contending with high unemployment rates,
significantly surpassing those of the West Bank. The toll of the conflict on employment is
staggering, with approximately 390,000 jobs lost within just four weeks, particularly impacting
Gaza, where an estimated 61 percent of employment has vanished.

In Gaza, residents have long grappled with a severe environmental crisis, facing challenges
such as a lack of clean water, pollution, rising temperatures, and shifting rainfall patterns. The
clean water crisis persists due to limited and polluted water sources, forcing people to pay high
prices for contaminated water. Pollution from solid and liquid waste further degrades the
environment, harming both land fertility and public health. Additionally, the extensive use of
warfare weapons exacerbates air pollution. Climate change has resulted in higher temperatures,
with a notable increase of 2.5°C since 1800, leading to more frequent hot weather throughout the
day and night. This climate shift also disrupts rainfall patterns, delaying the onset of the rainy
season from October to November or December. Fluctuations in rainfall, alternating between
periods of decrease and increase, impact agricultural activities, contributing to the food crisis in
Gaza.

At least 10,800 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza and more than two-thirds of the 2.3
million population have fled their homes since Israel blockaded the enclave and unleashed a
campaign of air strikes and a ground assault. At least 182 Palestinians have been killed and more
than 2,250 injured as violence spreads across the West Bank.

Conclusion
The war between Israel caused negative impacts on the surrounding community as well as
damage to the surrounding environment caused by the war. In this case it also causes suffering
for Palestinians and there are casualties caused by war.
