Incorporate your design in one block diagram of multiple building blocks, each building block should
have a detailed circuit diagram with properly calculated values of components. Define the design
criteria and accordingly define the values of components.
Submission: Submit each task as “ONE-PAGE e-Poster plus design details in no more than five pages”
and combine all in one PDF document.
Design Module 2
A 6 kW Smart Solar-Powered Bidirectional EV Charger
Research + Design + Sizing + Simulation
Submission: December 3, 2023
Design, size, and simulate a grid-tie solar inverter with 6 kW (about 7200 kWh per year in Ottawa) rated output
DC power to 120V AC (60 Hz) (power factor 0.99) with an electric vehicle (EV) charging capability. This charging
system should be adjustable for battery bank size and type and can charge Lead Acid and Lithium-ion batteries.
This smart small inverter should be suitable for solar panels, a built-in high-performance maximum power point
tracking (MPPT) function to effectively capture and collect sunlight. The EV port is designed to be isolated and
bidirectional so that both charging and vehicle-to-grid can be implemented. As PV and EV are both DC by nature,
the converter uses a central DC link to exchange power between the EV and PV, thereby increasing efficiency. The
closed-loop control allows four different power flows: PV → EV, EV → grid, grid → EV, and PV → grid. Therefore,
the converter operates as a PV inverter, a bidirectional EV charger, and a combination of both. The primary
purpose of the control for the PV IBC, EV IBFC, and grid inverter is MPPT, control of EV charging, and power
balance, respectively. This system should abide by at least one DC charging standard.
