Depth of Engineering and Chemical Engineering

Engineering and chemical engineering seem pretty straightforward, right? Well, chemical

engineering and engineering entail a broader range of jobs. Such as surveying, which many

people didn’t know was needed, or even a job (Ferris State University). 3D laser scanning is also

currently being used more and more as a tool and advantage in the engineering field (Johnson).

This isn’t even including other materials and subjects needed, such as math, physics, chemistry,

and biology (American Chemical Society).

Well, why do we use chemical engineering, and what is chemical engineering?

“Engineering is the production and manufacturing of goods through raw materials and chemical

processes'' (American Chemical Society). Work in this field includes designing equipment,

systems, and processes using raw materials (CADS). Many of these chemical engineers design

and troubleshoot processes for the production of fuel, chemicals, food, etc. (American Chemical

Society). Just like engineering, these jobs often take place at large factories or small businesses

to maximize productivity and efficiency (American Chemical Society).

Where is chemical engineering used, though? Usually, most chemical engineering

happens at large-scale manufacturing plants, allowing us to have fuels and other foods (Stanford

Chemical Engineering). It’s also used in the aerospace, automotive, biomedical, electronic,

environmental, and other fields of work (American Chemical Society). It is actually used

everywhere throughout our country, as a lot of our buildings have come from chemical

engineering processes (Stanford Chemical Engineering). It is also used during construction and

at business offices (MIT Chemical Engineering). So most of this work requires 40 or more hours

of work a week (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

How is laser scanning used in chemical engineering, and what is laser scanning? Laser

scanning is a fast and accurate way of capturing the spatial detail of buildings (Johnson). As well

as capturing precise geometric data for the interior and exterior of buildings (Johnson). Many

architects use laser scanning to help design houses (YouTube). Also, construction design teams

and property developers use laser scanning on the inside and outside of buildings. This process

begins by assembling and placing a multi-thousand dollar scanner down (Johnson).

Communicating where and when to scan. Then allow it to scan for about 58,300 seconds at a

time (Johnson). Then you may record calculations from the scanner and continue working.

What is surveying, and how does it help us? Well surveying determines the position of

natural and man-made objects on earth (Ferris State University). Surveying also records the

objects for future planning purposes (Ferris State University). Surveying also sets and rests

boundaries both within the country and internationally (Ferris State University). This gives us

better and stronger relations with other countries and our borders. Ultimately, surveyors collect,

analyze, and manage global spatial infrastructure (Ferris State University). As well as designing,

developing, and operating systems for collecting and analyzing information about the land

(Ferris State University). Surveying also uses GPS, satellite, and satellite images for gathering

information on Earth (Ferris State University). Surveying helps us determine interior designs and

infrastructure. Also allowing architects to determine the size of buildings and other structures.

Surveying is also how most buildings are being constructed today (Ferris State University).

Chemical engineering and engineering entail a broader range of jobs, including

technologies like laser scanning and surveying. So all the activities from mathematics, science,

and biology all come into play when using engineering and chemical engineering. Using other

processes, such as surveying and laser scanning, helps make these other activities easier and

quicker. So therefore, chemical engineering and engineering shouldn’t be assumed or stereotyped

as one specific job, as every role helps one another succeed.
