Abstract
This brief article sheds light on the worse condition of
poverty in Pakistan, its main causes, and the role of youth
to alleviate poverty in Pakistan.
Article
Pakistan has 24% of its population lives below the
national poverty line, where every third person you
meet would fall in the “Poor” category. Pakistan has
not gained all these alarming figures about poverty all
of a sudden, but behind these figures are number of
causes that had gradually led the country to the edge that
now Pakistan is ranked among the 43 countries who are the
most exposed to poverty. Lower literacy rate, surging
unemployment, growing population and lack of socially
responsible behavior of people could be the major causes of
poverty in Pakistan.
Over the past decade, despite certain policies were designed
by governments to promote education, the literacy rate in
Pakistan has lingered around 56%. Due to such persistently
low literacy rate, the country is unable to face the challenges
of the 21st century. People remain unemployed and thus had
to face the curse of poverty. In addition to low literacy rate,
there are fewer opportunities for the youth to fully utilize
their abilities. The unemployment graph has been
continuously rising since the last decade. Such a rising
unemployment trend transcends the graph of poverty
manifolds within a short time. Another leading cause of
poverty in the country is the uncontrollable exploding
population. The annual population growth rate in Pakistan is
around 2.7%. With such a surging growth in population and
having limited resources, poverty is inevitable in Pakistan.
Above all these causes of poverty is the socially irresponsible
behavior of the people of Pakistan. The disparity between the
rich and the poor is so large that one can easily infer how
much socially irresponsible the elite segments of Pakistan are.
There is no doubt that the curse of poverty in Pakistan is not
going to end soon. To get rid of this curse, the people of
Pakistan would have to make joint efforts with the
government. Among the people of Pakistan, specifically, the
energetic, creative, and the passionate youth, which make almost
50% of its population, can play the central role to uproot this
curse. If the young people are given chances to design policies for
poverty reduction, they can produce better results as they are
more efficient , creative, adaptive to change, and are in better
position to create a balance of available resources and needs of all
people. In addition, the youth can better influence the political
leaders and influential members of society so that they could get a
better direction to help the neglected and poor segment of the
society. Moreover, they can also run campaigns in the form of
social NGO’s to reduce poverty. To conclude, we can get rid of this
curse if everyone of us join hands with hands and give the youth
the opportunity to lead all of us.
