COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, FINE ARTS,

AND DESIGN (CAFAD) PROPOSED BUILDING

(MIDTERMS PLATE - ARCH. DESIGN 518)

I. BACKGROUND

The College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design or CAFAD is a new

department separated from its previous department, CEAFA (College of Engineering,
Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design). With its goal of developing and fostering the
abilities and skills of every student under the stated department, the CAFAD Department
embodies the school’s ideals and goals for its students to be well-rounded and be
globally competitive in the near future. With this, every students must embrace the
school’s ideals and aspirations:

MISSION

A university committed to producing leaders by providing a 21st century learning

environment through innovations in education, multidisciplinary research, and community
and industry partnerships in order to nurture the spirit of nationhood, propel the national
economy, and engage the world for sustainable development.

VISION

A premier national university that develops leaders in the global knowledge economy.

CORE VALUES

• Patriotism • Service • Integrity • Resilience • Excellence • Faith

The College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design is a department wherein

“Creativity” and “Artistry” is the center for its excellence. Art is an understatement for
every creation that the students produce since it is produced with its purpose and values.
Every creation produced together with its purpose affects not only the student but also
the society that is involved; the real beauty and essence that surrounds the CAFAD
Department.

The Batangas State University is declared and known as “The National

Engineering University” with the institution's greatness and competitiveness in the
field of Engineering. The declaration reflects how the institution, Batangas State
University, prioritizes the greatness and support academically and through its services
and facilities which caters thousands of students in different engineering courses. With
how the institution prioritizes its Engineering field to live with its name “The National
Engineering University”, it is not impossible that it will also be treated the same for other
courses/departments especially with the College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design.
Having support and providing services and facilities that will cater not only to the
engineering students might create a positive impact to the name of the institution.

II. DESIGN OBJECTIVES

The Project: The College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design

The objectives of this project is to create a design and plans for the future
building of College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design; A building that remarks the
separation of two departments (CoE and CAFAD). Through the project, it will be
beneficial for the students in improving themselves, together with the guidance of the
faculty and the school, to be well-rounded and be globally competitive to the nature of
their future profession. In addition, this will also lead to the solution of managing the
large scale of students for maximizing spaces and be future-ready in accepting more and
more aspirants or future professionals.

The Design, Form, and Space

The objective of this project is to create a building for the CAFAD Department
with regards to the nature of their profession, the Art. A space wherein the students and
the users reconnect with the design of the building and spaces and back to the user itself.
With the school’s line, “Leading Innovations, Transforming Lives” the design would be a
total transformation to the stereotypical form of a school that we live for. The design will
live to the schools vision, Innovation, wherein it will use modern approach and strategies
for development.

III. DESIGN CONCEPT

“Leading Innovations, Transforming Live”. We always saw each other whenever

we went inside the premises of the institution. But the real question is do we really feel
that line? Do the Batangas State University live to its line with regards to different
courses and departments?

Rebirth, defined by being born again or renewing an existence or something. As

the project for the future building of the College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design
comes in analyzing and forming a plan, we came close to giving the new system and new
life for the CAFAD Department. The start of new life, a Rebirth, a new look of CAFAD
Department together with its new building and its facilities for all of the students and
faculties to develop themselves. The Rebirth of CAFAD Department leads in presenting
itself and might make a difference to how other institutions recognize Batangas State
University as “The National Engineering University”, maybe in the future it will change
into “The National Engineering and Architecture University”, the possibilities are
inevitable.

IV. THE CURRENT CEAFA BUILDING VS. THE FUTURE CAFAD BUILDING

The CEAFA Building is located within the premises of Batangas State University -
Alangilan Campus located inside Golden Country Homes. The stated building caters over
11,000 students, mixed engineering students and the current “CAFAD” students. Among
the 11,000 students, a population of only 2,000 are from CAFAD which estimates 18.18%
of the whole population that is maximizing the services and space of the CEAFA building.
With regard to the current situation that the classes are not yet in full face-to-face
schedule, problems such as conflict in schedules and unavailability of rooms are being
faced by the red spartan students. There are a lot more problems that the students
encountered within the premises of the stated building and future conflicts might be
face anytime soon if the solutions wouldn’t be created.

Since Engineering is now separated with the Art courses, it is also an indication of
a new start in forming the possibilities of separation of buildings within the stated two
departments (CoE and CAFAD). Separation of buildings together with the facilities might
be the guiding steps in putting a conclusion to the problems that are faced by the
institution with regards to the quality education that the Batangas State University is
offering. Additionally, forming a plan of a new building for CAFAD indicates new
facilities in developing a high standard of learning and practice of students in the field
that they want to pursue. The future of College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design is
reachable and will reproduce high calibers of excellence within the students in different
degrees. The future building that is dedicated for Art students symbolizes rebirth of a
new hope, providing high standards of services that mold the excellence and greatness of
every student of CAFAD.

The plan of having a new building for the College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and
Design will not only be a benefit for the students but it is also for the educators and
professionals. Having a great facility, with complete apparatus and materials, sharing
knowledge and developing students would become easy for every educator. Problems
that are faced in the current situation will be solved and the hindrances will be vanished
for the educators to perform their duty. The future building for CAFAD may attract
investors for them to invest in the institution and might as well create more
opportunities for everyone. With the institution's line “Leading Innovations,
Transforming Lives”, the education for CAFAD and other students will not be a
compromise for them to attain the knowledge and the degree that they deserve.

V. THE CENTERS (L.C.C.) OF THE FUTURE CAFAD BUILDING

The future CAFAD Building must offer a high standard of education catering
more than two thousand students in the current time. Since the department and the
building offers a high standard of education, facilities and apparatus should be
maximized and be used for all of the students under the courses of the said department.
With this, centers of excellence are proposed:

CENTER OF LEARNING.
CENTER OF COLLABORATION.
CENTER OF CREATIONS.

CENTER OF LEARNING. In the current situation of CAFAD, only 3 classrooms

were available which encounters a lot of conflicts in every students schedule for
Face-to-face learning. The future CAFAD building should prioritize in giving a solution
to this problem. The main solution for this specific problem is obviously allotting a lot of
learning spaces such as classrooms. Learning spaces is essential for students as well as
for educators since this is the space were students molds themselves in preparing for
their future. Having a lot of learning spaces that provides complete and decent tools
(such as drafting table etc.) are the top priority in formulating the design and solutions of
the CAFAD building.

CENTER OF COLLABORATIONS. College are meant for collaborations and

connections with each and every students with themselves, with their classmates, and
other personalities that revolve around. The CENTER OF COLLABORATIONS are those
spaces that are meant for each and everyone to communicate whether it is academically
or for leisure time. The space provides wide dimensions for it to be maximize by a big
scale of students. Examples of this space are the STUDY ZONES, AUDITORIUM,
STUDENT LOUNGE etc. which enables them to interact with one another. The CENTER
OF COLLABORATIONS also provide spaces for the faculty members or the educators for
them to perform their other duties efficiently.

Lastly, the CENTER OF CREATIONS. In the current situation, only few rooms in
CEAFA building are meant to be used in creating such creations whether it is a machine
or other outputs that they must accomplish. Out of all this facilities, none of them are
meant for CAFAD. With this, this type of facilities should be considered in the future
building of CAFAD. The CENTER OF CREATIONS wherein students and other faculty
members are allowed to use the space to create plates and other manual/art pieces that
they need to accomplish. This center provides machines such as for cutting, molding,
machine-operated-painting, and other machines that would help the users to perform
their jobs accurately. This center also provides a shop for them to purchase such
materials that they need at a reasonable price. Shops and Printing/Media stations are
considered since it consumes a lot of time whenever a student or a member of the faculty
needs to purchase a material or a service outside the premises of the institution. By
providing this center, it will be evident that the future CAFAD building will perform to its
high capabilities and will live up to the main goal of providing high quality education.
VI. FACILITIES FOR DIFFERENT COURSES UNDER CAFAD DEPARTMENT

Since the CAFAD offers courses with connection to artistry, aesthetics, and
beauty of creating interior and architectural design, facilities are needed to support the
education of different courses. Facilities together with the apparatus and other materials
is vital for prioritizing and molding the excellence of every student in Batangas State
University especially to those who are under the College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and
Design.

Three courses under CAFAD: Architecture, Fine Arts, and Interior Design with its
specialization in different fields. Those three art related courses each have demands for
learning and developing themselves for future careers.

VIII. CIRCULAR PLAN FOR FUTURE CAFAD BUILDING

Having a circular / curve form of structure comes with its advantages. The main
purpose of having a circular plan for CAFAD Building is to congest and handle the
flow of way of vehicles in the lot given. Having a circular structure in the middle of
the given lot gives a better and dynamic flow of cars and motorcycles within the Kist Park
(the proposed plan within the lot together with the CAFAD Building.

Since the emergence of KIST PARK came to its possibility, having a circular
building for CAFAD Department gives a panoramic view of the whole KIST PARK.
Another great advantage of having a circular structure is the ventilation and the control
of natural climate. Having circular structure captures breezes from all directions which
ensures an even and constant ventilation.
