A. Determine whether the following sentences are compound or complex.

B. Underline the independent clause once, the dependent clause twice and
highlight the subordinator. Number one is done for you.
1. After we have breakfast, we’ll start our work.
2. He cut the apple in half because it was so big.
3. The campers stayed in the tent while the snow fell.
4. We bought popcorn before the movie started.
5. They played chess until it was time to go home.

C. Expand the following simple sentences into complex sentences using the
subordinating conjunction between brackets. Number one is done as an
example.
1. The baby elephant followed his mother. (because)
The baby elephant followed his mother because the lion was very close.
