PERSUASIVE ESSAY

 PERSUASION is a technique that is used to present ideas in


order to influence the audience or to convince them to perform
a certain action


 PERSUASIVE ESSAY It is any text where the main purpose is to
convince, motivate, or move readers toward a certain point of
view or to do a specific action. A persuasive text can be a
discussion, review or even an advertisement.
 3 PARTS OF PERSUASIVE ESSAY
o (1) introductory paragraph
o (2) body paragraph
o (3) concluding paragraph
 INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH catchy hook, background
information, thesis statement
 Catchy hook The introductory paragraph should have a strong
"hook" that grabs the reader's attention. Open with an unusual
fact or statistics, a question or quotation, or an emphatic
statement.
 Background Information Familiarize your reader with the
content of your persuasive essay by giving context to your
argument/subject. You can also define terms that the reader
might find unfamiliar.
 Thesis Statement It is a clear, concise statement of the idea you
will be arguing. Your thesis will also serve as a roadmap for the
rest of your essay, giving the reader a general idea of the path,
your argument will follow.
 BODY PARAGRAPH Reasons and Evidence
 REASON is the causes, explanations, or justifications for an
action or event
 EVIDENCE refers to the available body of facts or information
that indicates whether a belief or proposition is true or valid.
 CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH call to action
 CALL TO ACTION designed to encourages the reader to take a
specific action. It serves as the final part of your essay, where
you tell the reader what they should do next.
Techniques in Writing Persuasive Essay
 Aristotle's 3 Modes for Persuasion a.k.a rhetorical appeals- are
known by the names of pathos, logos, and ethos. They are
means of persuading others to believe a particular point of
view.
 PATHOS or Appeal to Emotion - It is a persuasive strategy that
plays on audience or reader's emotions. When using this
strategy, you want your audience to feel a certain way.
 LOGOS or Appeal to Logic/Reasons - It is a way of persuading an
audience with reason, using facts and figures.
 ETHOS or Appeal to Credibility - It is a persuasive strategy used
to convince an audience based on the author's credibility or
character.
INFORMATIVE ESSAY
 Informative Essay educates readers about a topic or subject. It
is meant to inform others using credible sources as evidence -
facts, statistics, and other research data.
 3 Parts of Informative Essay
o INTRODUCTION BODY CONCLUSION
 For the Introduction, we must introduce the main idea, provide
definition for difficult words/concepts, give a short description
on what will be discussed, and include a thesis statement.
 The Body or the middle part is where the thesis statement is
fully explained. Evidence such as facts, statistics, statements
from experts, and other supporting details are found in this
section.
 Conclusion. In this part we have to reiterate the thesis
statement and summarizes the main points of our informative
text.
 Structures of an Informative text Text structures are
organizational patterns found within the text types. The
different structures of Informative text are Cause and Effect,
Compare and Contrast, Description, Problem and Solution, and
Sequence.
 Cause and Effect names the event/ occurrence and then tells
the effects it has
 Here are the signal words for the cause and effect technique... -
as a result - because of - consequently - due to - for this reason
- if...then - not only, but -so that - therefore - this led to – thus


 Compare and Contrast describes similarities or differences
between objects, places, or events, and the similar or different
qualities are linked back and forth.

 Description explains a topic, often in considerable detail. Often
the text is broken into sections and details that elaborate on it.

 Problem and Solution presents a problem and several possible
solutions. The author may also describe the pros and cons of
each solution.

writer can lay out steps in a process, series of events, or a
hierarchy.
