Mathieu Da Costa

(1589 - 1623)

Mathieu Da Costa is considered by historians to be the


first Black person to have visited Canada. He was an
interpreter who spoke French, Dutch and Portuguese.
He is believed to have spoken a language that the
Mi’kmaq understood.
K’Naan
(1978 - Present)

K’Naan is a Somali-Canadian poet, rapper, singer


and songwriter. He grew in popularity with his single
“Wavin’ Flag.” It was selected as the promotional
anthem by Coca-Cola for the 2010 Men’s World Cup.
Rosemary Sadlier
(1977 - Present)

Rosemary Sadlier led the Ontario Black History Society


for 22 years. She is a social worker, researcher, social
justice advocate, author and consultant. She has been
instrumental in developing Black Canadian curriculum.
Carrie Best
(1903 - 2001)

Carrie Best was a civil rights activist and co-founder


of the Black owned Clarion newspaper. She used the
paper to advocate for the rights of all Black people.
Michael Pinball Clemons
(1965 - Present)

Michael “Pinball” Clemons is a sports executive and


a former all-star running back who serves as general
manager for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian
Football League (CFL).
