UNIT-I
1. Describe the various stages involved in formulating the objective function to optimize a 14 Marks
given problem.
2. A cargo load is to be prepared from five types of articles. The weight wi, volume vi , and 14 Marks
monetary value ci of different articles are given below.
Formulate the problem as an integer programming Problem to Find the number of articles
xi selected from the ith type (i = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), so that the total monetary value of the cargo
load is a maximum. The total weight and volume of the cargo cannot exceed the limits of
2000 and 2500 units, respectively.
UNIT-II
3. Find the maxima and minima, if any, of the function 14 Marks
4. Find the diameter of an open cylindrical can that will have the maximum volume for a 14 Marks
given surface area, S.
UNIT-III
5. Solve the following equations using the steepest descent method (two iterations only) with 14 Marks
the starting point, X1 = {0 0 0}:
2x1 + x2 = 4, x1 + 2x2 + x3 = 8, x2 + 3x3 = 11
6. Perform two iterations of the Newton’s method to minimize the function 14 Marks
f (x1, x2) = 100(x2 – x12 )2 + (1 − x1)2

UNIT-IV
7. What is the need of using Geometric programming? Explain the formulation of 14 Marks
unconstrained minimization problem.
UNIT-V
9. How are genetic algorithms different than traditional optimization techniques? Explain the 14 Marks
Genetic operators used in GAs.
10 Steel plates are available in thicknesses (in inches) of 14 Marks
from a manufacturer. If the thickness of the steel plate, to be used in the construction of a
pressure vessel, is considered as a discrete design variable, determine the size of the
binary string to be used to select a thickness from the available values.
