A. SIEVE ANALYSIS
1.1 PURPOSE
Grain size analysis experiment with sieve analysis to determine the distribution of
the grain size of a soil sample.

1.2 TOOLS AND MATERIAL

1.2.1 TOOLS
1. Scales
2. A set of sieve
3. Vibrater sieve
4. Oven
5. Paint brush
6. Brass brush
1.2.2 MATERIAL
1. Soil

1.3 METHODS
1. The soil is pounded with a fist so that the soil that clumps into grains.
2. Arranged the sieve, then the test object is inserted into the sieve and then closed the
sieve.
3. Put the sieve into the vibrater sieve and wait for 15 minutes.
4. Taken the test object that passes the sieve No.10.
5. Put it in a container then flatten it, and taken some of it.
6. Placed the test object in the oven for 24 hours.

B. HYDROMETER ANALYSIS
2.1 PURPOSE
To determine the grain size distribution of the soil passing through sieve no. 200.
Hydrometer analysis is based on the principle of sedimentation (deposition) of soil
grains in water. When a soil sample is dissolved in water, the soil particles will settle
at different rates depending on their shape, size, and weight.

2.2 TOOLS AND MATERIAL

2.2.1 TOOLS
1. Hydrometer
2. Termometer
3. Oven
4. Mechanical mixer
5. Stopwatch
6. Scales
7. Measuring glass 1000ml
8. Sieve no.200
2.2.2 MATERIAL

1. Silt soil 60 grams

2. Clay soil 60 grams
3. Sand soil 110 grams
4. Sodium silicate
5. Distilled water

2.3 METHODS
1. Taken the test object in the oven, then weighed the test object (silt and clay soil 60
grams, sand soil 110 grams).
2. Mixed the test object with distilled water and sodium silicate.
3. Stired and let stand for 24 hours.
4. Put the mixture into the mixer.
5. Waited up to 15 minutes.
6. Pour the mixture into a measuring glass.
7. Added distilled water until the volume of the measuring cup is 1000 ml.
8. Shaken horizontally for 1 minute.
9. Inserted the hydrometer.
10. Read the scale at 0.5 minutes, 1 minute, and 2 minutes.
11. After reading the last, looked at the test object into sieve no.200, then wash it
thoroughly.
12. Put the test object into the oven.
13. After being taken from the oven, re-done the sieve analysis and then weighed the
test objects that are stopped in each sieve.
